Lindsay Park win third straight P B Lawrence Stakes with Gentleman Roy

Lindsay Park’s Gentleman Roy won the Group 2 P B Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on Saturday. The eight-year-old is now the third straight horse trained by Ben, Will, and JD Hayes to win the $300,000 race at Caulfield Racecourse.  
 
Mr. Brightside, who is being rested ahead of the Melbourne Spring racing season, won the P B Lawrence Stakes convincingly in 2022 and 2023. Gentleman Roy and Mr. Brightside will race alongside each other at the upcoming Group 1 Memsie Stakes on August 31.   

Veteran delivers 

Despite coming into the race as one of the older runners, Gentleman Roy was one of the favourites to win the P B Lawrence Stakes.  
 
The 8-year-old won his prior two races. The betting sites had Gentleman Roy as second favourite with $5.00 odds, just behind Jamie Cummings’ Pericles at $2.70.  
 
Pericles finished in third, behind Enver Jusufovic’s Pinstriped and just ahead of dark horse Aegon.  

Lindsay Park wins three straight 

Mr. Brightside became the first horse to win two consecutive P B Lawrence Stakes races last year.  
 
His trainers at Lindsay Park denied him the chance of winning his third straight in 2024. The seven-year-old gelding is being rested ahead of the big Melbourne Group 1 races this spring.  
 
Despite resting their star, Lindsay Park managed to cement its status as one of Australia’s top training firms with Gentleman Roy’s win.  
 
“It’s quite fitting that we were able to win this race today with Gentleman Roy after Mr. Brightside in the last two,” JD Hayes said, remarking on his company’s achievement. 
 
“They (Mr. Brightside and Gentleman Roy) were the two pinnacle horses that were quite key when we first got handed the licence. They were both sitting in the barn as maidens and looking back now, it was quite handy,” Hayes continued. 
 
“I think they said it was good placement, but I think we could point them anywhere and they would just win.” 

Memsie Stakes next for Gentleman Roy 

After his big win, Hayes called the P B Lawrence Stakes a “perfect” race for Gentleman Roy and said he was ecstatic that his horse finally got a win at Caulfield.  
 
After getting his first win at Caulfield, Gentleman Roy now has his sights set on the Group 1 Memsie Stakes on August 31.  
 
Gentleman Roy has never won a Group 1 race in his career. However, many horse racing betting experts have him tipped to be one of the biggest dark horses for the Memsie Stakes.  
 
He’s currently listed at $21.00, but those odds are expected to shorten once the pool of racers shrinks.  
 
Gentleman Roy’s stablemate Mr. Brightside is one of the two huge Memsie Stakes favourites. The betting apps give him $3.50 odds to win. Pride of Jenni ($2.50) is the only bigger favourite.
