Friday Racing Tips - Ipswich Racecourse 17/03/23

Racing returns to Ipswich this Friday with a solid nine race card and a quarter of a million dollars of prize money on offer. There looks to be some nice betting spots on the card with a handful of locally trained horses for some bigger stables that should be progressing onto some bigger races throughout the Autumn and a few horses who are coming back to a provincial level from higher grade races. The track is rated a soft 5, the weather should be fair and the rail is in true position. It should make for an exciting race day, follow me below as I outline the card.

Ipswich R1 - ST PATRICK DAY RACES HANDICAP (800m)

Selections:
#2 - Szabo (BEST BET)  - $1.60
#1 - North Of Eli - $3.80
#3 - Mishani Flash - $11.00
#4 - Assymetry - $5.50

BEST BET - #2 - Szabo (BEST BET)
Good little race we have first up here with a couple nice types returning but I am keen to be with the Brent Andrew trained Szabo who looks to be a super progressive horse out of Ipswich. She made her debut at the races back at the end of last year and whilst she was very green and didn’t know what was going on she was just far too sharp for them and class got her home all the way. She’s had a nice break for her trainers to get her ready for a return and I think she should have a great showing tomorrow.

THE DANGER - #1 - North Of Eli
North of Eli is a Michael Dunn trained two year old who resumes tomorrow at Ipswich and she is the main danger in this race after having just the one run at Newcastle last year where she drew way out wide and had to do it tough there all race in a big field, never really having the chance to get into things. However, I really liked the change of gear she showed at her most recent trial and the booking of Benny Thompson shows intent by the stable. Small field, short distance and she should go well.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Mishani Flash
Struggling a bit to find value in a small field but you can always be sure that Les Ross has something up his sleeve and Mishani Flash is his two year old for this race who gets Blake Shinn aboard for her return to the races, having been away for the last 15 or so weeks. The stable is in great form this year and Mishani Flash is one of the few in this field with prior racing experience and can surprise here.

Ipswich R2 - FOLLOW @IPSWICHTURFCLUB (BM60) (1350m)

Selections:
#3 - Birdonawing (NEXT BEST) - $2.60
#7 - Better Yet - $5.50
#2 - Alfa Lily - $4.40
#1 - Casrock - $5.50

BEST BET - #3 - Birdonawing (NEXT BEST)
Birdonawing is an Annabel Neasham trained runner who resumes here today after a Summer break and she was very good last prep, picking up two wins and a placing in five runs when she just looked to drop off a bit towards the tail end of her prep then. She’s all the better for that prep, knows the feeling of winning and it doesn’t take her much to get going. She’s proven at this track, Brodie Loy gets the booking and they map for a pretty soft run. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if she looks like a soft winner.

THE DANGER - #2 - Alfa Lily
Alfa Lily is the one who strikes my interest coming into this sixth up in a pretty successful prep thus far, picking up a first up win here before going to metro grade racing at Doomben / Eagle Farm for her next couple runs where she ran a very close second at Eagle farm three runs back and hasn’t been able to produce much since then. She’s had excuses a couple times since then and now comes back to her home base, meets softer opposition, maps well and with Samantha Collett on she can run a big race.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Better Yet

The O’dea and Hoystead Better Yet is a promising looking three-year-old who gets Benny Thompson aboard for her third up run and she looks like she is ready to peak third up after two very smart placings at Warwick and Gatton where, in both runs, she did everything but win when just being run over late by smart types to finish second both times. She gets another chance to go over here, is fitter and better for the runs on board and I think the big jockey upgrade to Thompson could be just what she needs.

Ipswich R4 - PIERRO AT COOLMORE (BM78) (1100m)

Selections:
#4 - Wegobam  - $4.20
#5 - Alamira  - $2.60
#1 - Chanel (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $7.50
#3 - Airstrike - $4.80

BEST BET - #4 - Wegobam
I am happy to take on the favourite and go with Wegobam off the back of his first up run at the Sunny Coast three weeks ago where he wound up steadily into the straight before shifting out and letting down to just miss placing there and end up fourth. That indicates to me that the trainer switch to Jack Bruce was very positive and he now gets Samantha Collet on for the ride, he draws out wide but that shouldn’t hinder his run style and 1100m should give him ample time to wind up for the straight again and I can see him running over these.

THE DANGER - #5 - Alamira
I do think that the Annabel Neasham trained Alamira is genuine and she gets as good a chance as any in this field first up tomorrow to pick up a first up win. She hasn’t been seen at the races since the beginning of December at Doomben when at the end of her prep and not having as much to offer. Prior to then though she was outstanding, picking up a win at Sunshine Coast and having two closes second placings on either side of that at Doomben and the Sunshine Coast. Brodie Loy is on, not too much weight on her back and at her best she’s better than these.

VALUE BET - #1 - Chanel (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Chanel hasn’t been seen at the races since September last year and it seemed like they had gotten the tactics right then when she appeared to be a fully different horse with blinkers on, having a smart placing at Donald before going to Warracknabeal to score smartly in a good time. She’s since switched trainers but wow did I loe the way she trucked along in a recent Sunshine Coast trial and we know the talent is there off last prep. The blinkers aren’t on for this but we don’t know what work she’s done under her new stable and it doesn’t take much to get her going. She can surprise at the odds.

Jockey Of The Day – James Orman

If you’ve been following me for a bit you know how much love I have for Jimmy Orman who gets a nice booking of rides for tomorrow’s meeting and I think we should see him go over on at least one of them. R1 - #3 - Mishani Flash  - $11.00
R2 - #5 - Kalea - $7.50
R3 - #1 - Clairvue Star - $2.20
R5 - #9 - Mishani Sniper - $1.95

Multi Tips For Ipswich Racecourse

I have applied a similar strategy for my multi at Ipswich to that of my midweek Multi at Warwick farm as I have tipped a lot in the earlier races I think there are a few standout types in these lower grade races who have been carefully placed by their stables for ratings purposes and who look to be moving onto Metro grade racing in the future. With a bit of luck I think we should be in the money here early on, follow me below for a fun bet to track over race day!

R2 - #3 - Birdonawing  - PLC $1.50
R4 - #1 - Chanel - PLC $2.50

Total Odds = $5.69

Best Promotions for Ipswich Racecourse

Promotions are traditionally the primary way for punters to create an edge over the bookies, as they can save your cash when your runner fails to win, in the instance of Unibet they often offer 2nd and 3rd money back in bonus bets for a selection of races on the midweek and Provincial racing days. Coupled with their generous odds I have to put them as the top bookie promotion wise at the moment for Australian racing.

If you are looking for the best promotions this week for Wednesday's racing I wouldn’t look past Unibet, often they offer odds boosts in addition to the money back promotions. Don’t forget to check your account as well for personal offers.

Promotions often change so make sure you sign up at unibet.com.au to see what promotions are applicable to you and you may even be surprised to find some promotions that weren’t mentioned here!
