Friday Racing Tips - Swan Hill Racecourse 09/06/23

Friday’s racing comes back to Swan Hill with a great eight race card that sees three maidens to kick us off and five subsequent competitive benchmark races to be contested for a share of ~$50k. However the feature of the day is the 1200m Pooles Account. Golden Topaz in race 7. It should make for a very exciting day down south that promises some competitive staying races with a bunch of riveting sprints and the lone staying race in race five. Follow me below as I outline my best betting spots on the card.

BEST BET - #1 - Capito (NEXT BEST)
I am betting in the opener as I think there are two main chances and there’s a bit of value to be had on both but I am leaning the way of Capito who changed hands to Noel Watson earlier in the year and was worked along nicely for a return to racing off the back of a long 84 week spell. He was honest as ever when resuming at Horsham, setting 6th and wide in the run and coming on strongly in the home straight to clock good late splits and end up third. I think he will have big upside off the back of that and maps to lob onto the speed and be hard to run down from there.

THE DANGER - #3 - Galathilion
Galathilion looks like a progressive four-year-old for Shawn Mathrick who comes into this fourth up and off the back of a handful of meritful runs. He resumed at Bairnsdale where he set fourth on the rails and worked nicely into the run to place third and then backed that up at his next outing at Ballarat where he set second in the run and loomed at the top of the straight but couldn’t get one over a smart winner in Hezabusybee when second there. He replicated a similar kind of run at Wodonga last time out and now should be hard fit fourth up and ready to go one better. 

VALUE BET  - #6 - Perdition
I am giving respect to the Mick Freedman trained three-year-old who is having his first start here. The stable has been flying with their first starters / juveniles and Declan Bates gets the booking for start one which is positive. They don’t draw too badly for midfield. Bates should have options and the Jumpout work on Perdition has looked very nice, a win wouldn’t shock.

BEST BET - #8 - Irish Rockstar 
There’s a few good things going around in this race, hence the lack of a clear cut favourite and about four of them in the market that are priced ~$6.50 but I have landed on Irish Rockstar who maps to gets the run of the race. He draws barrier eight and with only one runner inside him with speed I think he will lob up front, possibly with cover from the speed drawn around him and will be too good for these from there. He’s third up here and has won third up previously, coming off the back of a great Mile run at Hamilton in the same conditions that we get today where he was massive, leading and only finding one better to end up second. 

THE DANGER - #13 - The Ballet Dancer
The Ballet Dancer does look like a good thing going for the Hayes boys and he has had a decently long prep, with six runs thus far but they have patiently given him solid breaks between runs that has kept him quite fresh for each of his runs and the latest paid off, where he came off a four week break at Pakenham in BM64 grade where he came from off heels and powered through the field from deep to draw clear of them and put lengths on them there. The freshen up clearly worked and if he can go on with it now I think we will be seeing him in bigger things to come.

VALUE BET  - #12 - Tavistorm (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Tavistorm is a horse that has been costing me a bit of money to follow but I am not keen to write him off just yet. He had a decent Campaign in the Spring that extended into the Summer but didn’t get too much done overall, winning his first up run there and not being able to win again that prep. He is two from two first up so I think it’s safe to say he does his best work fresh and gets in light with Yendall aboard. If they go too hard up front he will be powering over them from the back of the field late.

BEST BET - #8 - Home Rule (BEST BET)  
I think Home Rule is going to take some running down at this distance which I definitely think is his best. He’s got two wins and two close placings in four starts at the 1200m and is a noted swimmer, ticking that box two back over the 1100m during the Warrnambool Carnival where he saluted with plenty in hand. He’s hard fit now, Bates aboard and they get in super light. He’s a free running horse and draws barrier one so he should do it well out front and give them something to run down, I just don’t think they get there in the mud and over 1200m.

THE DANGER - #10 - Yulong Storm
Impossible to ignore the hard fit and flying Yulong Storm who has won one and placed in three from his last four starts. He has been given a very quick turn around for this, having raced last weekend at Flemington in a BM70 where raced awesomely, joining the lead at the 250m and fighting hard to the line to place second there. I like him a lot in this field and the stable obviously thinks he’s a strong chance to take this out based on the quick turnaround. Top chance.

VALUE BET - #2 - Umgawa 
Umgawa is a bomb fresh horse who is resuming in this race for the L & T Corstens stable after a reasonable Summer prep where he steadily faded over the course of that prep, indicating he is much better fresh. He’s been racing in town and this will be his first run out of town for some time. When last first up at Pakenham he ran over this distance and clocked amazing splits through the whole run to power over the field and finish best inside the last 100m. I think he will go very well here.
