Ipswich Racecourse is located about 30km southwest of Brisbane’s CBD in a suburb called Bundamba. The track hosts a heap of racing each year and it is a great day out for racing fans to get up close and personal with some high-quality racehorses.

The course itself is circular in shape and features five separate chutes that are used as starting points for various race distances at the track. There is a 300m long straight which acts as the perfect place for fans to catch the closing stages of the race.

The first horse races in the general Ipswich area were held in 1848, however, it wasn’t until 1859 that the first official race meeting was held in Ipswich. The Ipswich Amateur Turf Club was founded in 1890 and races took place at Bundamba Racecourse.

In 1988, the Ipswich Amateur Turf Club was renamed to the Ipswich Turf Club and the track itself was rebranded as Ipswich Racecourse in 1991. In the early 1940s, the grounds were used as a base for the US Army.

There was major flooding of the racecourse and facilities in 1974 as the course itself was entirely submerged. In 1993, Gai Waterhouse became the first female trainer to win the Ipswich Cup, which is the biggest race held each year at the track.

Distance:	Guide:
1,000m	At the shortest distance, runners begin on the course proper and don’t have a lot of distance until the first and final turn. This therefore gives inside barriers more of an advantage.
1,100m	Quite similar to the 1,000m, however, runners have another 100m of straight to work with before the first and final turn. There still isn’t a lot of time before the first turn, so inside barriers do have some advantages.
1,200m	At 1,200m, runners begin the race in a chute just off the course proper; they have an additional 100m from the 1,100m race before the first and final turn. Inside barriers do lose some of their advantage here.
1,350m	Runners begin in a different chute and have the entire back straight (plus the distance in the chute) before the first and final turn. Inside barriers lose pretty much all their advantage.
1,666m	At this interesting race distance, runners start the race in a small chute and don’t have a lot of time before the first of two turns. Therefore, inside barriers do have some advantages here.
2,150m	At 2,150m, runners begin the race in a chute and have the entire home straight before they have to complete a full lap of the track. Inside barriers don’t have a lot of advantages here.

How to Get to Ipswich Racecourse

Ipswich Racecourse is about a 40-minute drive from Brisbane’s CBD. Driving is likely going to be your best bet as there isn’t a lot of public transport around the area. There is parking available near the racecourse as well if you do plan to drive.

Other than driving yourself, there are options like catching a taxi or rideshare service. Buses also operate in the area, however, you should check timetables depending on where you live compared to where the track is located to confirm if you are on the same route as the track.
