Saturday Racing Tips - Moonee Valley Racecourse 28/10/23

Cox Plate day has arrived at Moonee Valley and we have a massive $9 million race day ahead of us with two group 1 races and the feature of the day being the Ladbrokes Cox Plate, a WFA group 1 race over the 2040m for a share of a whopping $5 million prize money. The card is supported by another group 1 race, the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes over the 1200m and three group two races as well as a bunch of other listed races. Follow me below for my best bets at The Valley!

BEST BET - #3 - Verdad (BEST BET)
The favourite Verdad looks tough to beat here getting out to the 2000m now and coming off the back of a run in the Caulfield Guineas where he ran a very meritful race despite not being a winning chance there he found the line very strongly in defeat behind Griff. This race is nowhere near as difficult now which explains his short quote and I think that he will be a dangerous horse regardless of where he settles in the run now. I’m just not sure if I can have something on at the short price.

THE DANGER - #6 - Port Lockroy
Port Lockroy is putting together a very sharp record for Annabel Neasham after having taken out an 1800m race at Kensington where he didn’t beat all that much but the way in which he did it and the time in which he did it was ever so strong. He looks very well suited stepping out in trip to the 2000m now and with Dee one I think he’s a definite winning chance.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Sunsource
Sunsource has been around the mark for a while and we have had him in our free horse racing tips in a couple of those runs but he wouldn’t have been placed here if the Busuttin / Young stable didn’t think he was a winning chance. He raced well in the Super Impose despite not being able to come on strong late but did run well regardless. This isn’t out of reach for him.

BEST BET - #6 - Imperatriz (NEXT BEST)
It took me far too long to jump aboard the Imperatriz train but after she took out the McEwen Stakes I was happy to side with her in the Moir and she was just pure brilliance there with a spank job from on the speed where she beat the likes of Asfoora who went on to take out the Schillaci a couple weeks back. She’s won all three runs at The Valley and should belt these and make it four in a row.

THE DANGER - #7 - I Am Me
I Am Me can definitely be the exacta placing here for the Maher and Eustace stable and with the way she races she will give herself every chance to come on here. She looked like she was going to through the Sydney Stakes away but kicked into another gear late and won well. She is an honest chance here to fill the 2nd placing and I am keen to have her in my exotics tips.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Uncommon James
Uncommon James is a very sharp horse for the O’Dea / Hoystead camp and I think she is the other leading contender to fill second place here. She’s had two runs back from a spell this time in and last stepped out in the Schillaci where she did everything right in the run before the class horse Asfoora outkicked her at the 200m which is nothing to be ashamed of. Very well placed here hard fit now to fill the minors.

BEST BET - #1 - Romantic Warrior
How can you deny that Romantic Warrior deserves another chance for Danny Shum. He has to be forgiven for not taking out the Turnbull first up in Australia where he definitely had some issues after being terrible in the yard and then getting absolutely no favours in the run when having to do plenty of early work and still managing to finish fourth. His Hong Kong form is just absolutely killer and I think now, second up in Australia, he’s going to have a thing or two to show the horses down under. I am very excited.

THE DANGER - #5 - Gold Trip
Gold Trip hasn’t given us a reason to jump off him yet and I think he has to be given a chance here. His run in the Caulfield Cup last weekend showed that he is still very much here to play and I think that he he won’t be too prominent in the Melbourne Cup given the weight but given how he has run at Moonee Valley in the past and his WFA rating for this he should be very strong here.

VALUE BET - #11 - Militarize (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
I am keen to give Militarize another chance here after being against the shape of the race last time out in the Caulfield Guineas where he still found the line very very well in defeat to finish just behind the placegetters. He gets in now with absolutely no weight on his back, out to the 2000m and he draws very well to settle closer in the run. Lloyd retains the ride and has been giving him excellent steers, I think his time likely comes now.
