Saturday Racing Tips - Randwick Racecourse 23/06/23

It’s Civic Stakes Day at Randwick Racecourse and we are spoilt with a solid ten race card with a bunch of high grade Benchmark racing amongst both sprint and staying distance and the day is highlighted by the Drinkwise Civic Stakes in race 8, a 1400m sprint for a share of $160,000. Also look out for the Acy Stayer's Cup in race three, a BM90 staying race that should prove competitive. I have gone through the Randwick race card and picked out my best free horse racing tips so follow me below for another exciting day of black type racing!

BEST BET - #7 - Wahine Toa - (BEST BET)
Wahine Toa has looked to have returned in very good order for the Maher and Eustace Stable off her resumption run at Flemington a few weeks back. She came from well back in the field over the 2000m to power home hard, narrowly placing second and easily could have won that deeper into her prep. She has both a good second up record and an exceptional 2400m+ record. Has plenty of upside second up here and should only run well.

THE DANGER - #5 - Strawberry Rock

Strawberry Rock looks like the other leading contender for Maher and Eustace who look to dominate this race which is no surprise given how they go with big staying races and this one looks to have really hit form off the back of a third up win last start where she got out to the 2400m and relished the trip, boxing along before being asked for effort at the 300m and driving clear of them for a big win in the last 100m. She’s at peak fitness now and should only go well here.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Outlandos
Outlandos is a truly bred stayer so if this eventuates as a true staying contest he will be very strong here. His last run came in the Brisbane Cup two weeks ago where, despite meeting a couple horses who just had the edge on him, he still ran a meritful run when finishing down the track there. He’s as honest as they come, generally around the mark and I think he’s one to put in your exotics numbers.

BEST BET - #7 - Overriding- (NEXT BEST)

I am a big fan of the Nathan Doyle trained Overriding who is having just her second preparation at the races this time in but has earned her crack at Saturday Grade off the back of two equally awesome wins back from a seventeen week spell. Both of the runs have come over the 1250m at Newcastle and both wins have been dominant, when boxing along until the turn before angling out and powering over them in the final 200m to clock fast and smart wins. He gets an honest contest now but I think he’s up to the task and should be at just about peak third up here.

THE DANGER - #1 - Contemporary
It’s going to be hard to knock the James Cummings trained Contemporary who ran at Rosehill three weeks ago over the 1200m in stronger company than this when he loomed from behind a hot tempo and wound up well, albeit being against the race shape, he still had the class to run a close third to Devil’s Throat. I would say off the back of that run the extra 100m looks suited to his style and he does get a bit of a bump down in competition here now.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Miss Hellfire (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
I am too big of a fan of Miss Hellfire to jump off the Snowden trained star and I think she is going to make this a close run race. She’s been racing at Rosehill in her past couple, scoring impressively at the course over the 1200m two runs back before running a strong second placing to Winning Verse in her last outing at that same track / trip. Obviously not as strong here as that race, the extra 100m looks like it won’t hinder her based on her style and I think as long as there is petrol in the tank she goes well.

BEST BET - #12 - Waihaha Falls (NEXT BEST)

You would have to think off the back of Waihaha Falls’ run two back at Randwick that he’s going to be very tough to beat here back on the course he loves the most. He ran last time out in the Luskin Star at Scone, where on paper it looks an ordinary run and I think that’s why we get the price we do here but in fact he clocked great splits and was just against the race shape that day. He’s only not either won or come second in two of his seven runs at this track and by the look of the tick over trial I think O’shea has him right to go.

THE DANGER - #13 - Cotehele

Stablemate to Waihaha Falls, Cotehele is contesting the easiest race he has seen in a bit since racing at Rosehill just over a month ago when he powered home from the back of the field for an enormous win. He was held up badly in the run there and only got clear air in the last 150m but had plenty for them. He has been kept fresh since then and from his tick over trial last week he appears to be moving very nicely. I am confident he will be in the finish.

VALUE BET - #4 - Art Cadeau 
Art Cadeau isn’t having the easiest of times this prep for Terry Robinson after what was a very successful four year old and five year old season for him but he does love this track and I have a bit of a special place in my heart for him. He’s won four from eight runs at this track with a close second as well and should be at just about his peak here after two runs back from a spell where he hasn’t really been headed but hard fit now, draws for a very economical run in transit and I think he can surprise.
