Saturday Racing Tips - Sandown Racecourse 11/02/23

Metro grade racing continues at Sandown into the second week of Febraury and wow we have been spoilt with some serious black type racing. The card consists of nine races with 5 sprints over the 1100m and the remaining races being run over the mid distance ranges. There are three group three races, three group two races and the one group one race, which is the feature of the day, the LADBROKES C.F. ORR STAKES run over 1100m for a share of $750,000 under weight for age conditions. The rail is out +10m and the track is expected to be a good 4.

BEST BET - #1 - Barber (BEST BET) 
Barber is a Cummings trained two year old who resumes at the races today and must be respected on that alone. All you can do is win and he has done that, being undefeated in two career starts to date. The first of those runs was at Randwick where he didn’t get a comfortable run but was far too good for them regardless and drew clear inside the last 600m. He replicated that after at Rosehill with a similar win. He’s had two soft trials to lead him into this and I am confident he will have a big showing on race day.

THE DANGER - #3 - Brave Halo
Brave Halo is a mean colt from Perth. He made it three from three at home and if you read the times he did even better than Amelia’s Jewel who was the best two year old last season. I think he is super genuine based on that and the trial last week was good. He maps to sit on the speed and always has a strong kick. I think this will be contested by mostly him and Barber, just not sure if he has what it takes to knock off the runner above.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Gangitano 
The Yargi trained Gangitano resumes at the races here after a solid debut in the Spring in the Merson Cooper and whilst he didn’t take that out, the late splits were great and the run style was nice when third there to the in form Little Brose. His recent Jumpout was solid as well when leading throughout and asked for a bit to win well. I am confident he will be fighting out the finish here.

BEST BET - #5 - Uncommon James (NEXT BEST)
Uncommon James looks ready to go and I don’t think this field will be able to stop him. The O’Dea/Hoystead camp has him good for resumption here. He looked like a Group one horse in Spring after taking out the Regal ROller but then was spelled after suffering an injury there. His trial win at Deagon was awesome and whilst 1100m looks a bit short for him I think he’s just too good for these.

THE DANGER - #6 - Chain Of Lightning
Chain of Lightning is a Moody trained runner that also resumes today. She made leaps and bounds in the Spring when dominantly winning the Tristarc on Caulfield Cup day. She was at the end of her prep when running in the Golden Eagle so can forgive that run but still wasn’t that bad. She is undefeated fresh, maps to sit on the speed and will be the main danger to Uncommon James.

VALUE BET  - #9 - Triple Missile
Triple Missile has a genuine motor and will certainly launch late. The Lindsey Smith trained gelding is resuming here after a two run Spring prep after being ridden too meekly, winding up just a bit too late to run into second placing behind the smart Argentia. The trial and Jumpout does suggest that they are preparing him for the Newmarket but he can take this out.

BEST BET - #1 - I’m Thunderstruck
I’m Thunderstruck may have his eyes onto bigger and better things but he’s as honest as they come after an awesome Spring. During that prep he most notably ran second to Anamoe in a fast finishing time. His Jumpout and trial work makes it seem that he will be as good as ever and I think that the track will also suit him a lot more than Caulfield.

THE DANGER - #10 - Jacquinot
Jacquinot has a class edge on a lot of these. He resumed in the Manfred on the 25th of January and he was whacking away down the straight but then picked up late to drive hard and win in the final strides of that race. Based off that 1400m should be great for him and the fitness should be good now. Major appeal.

VALUE BET - #8 - Nugget (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)

Nugget is just a class animal at the moment. He has been an absolute machine in his last three wins, just being way too smart and each time similarly finding a decent spot near the speed and hammering them inside the last 300m. The times have always been good and I think that he can go over again today.

Sandown is a bit of a tricky trick to multi a few runners together so I am opting to go with a stable / jockey backing multi with the runners who are either locally trained or who are proven at this track.
