Wednesday Racing Tips - Doomben Racecourse 02/08/23

Racing returns to Doomben this Wednesday for what is shaping up to be a great little card as the top Queensland stables and some out of state stables put forward runners who look to be starting big Spring preps and there are eight races on the card with three maidens and the rest to be run in mixed grade. There looks to be some standout betting spots on the card and I have focused on the sprints mostly as Doomben’s front running bias can be used to our advantage. Follow me below for another exciting day of racing in Queensland!

BEST BET - #2 - Kenshin Maru (NEXT BEST) 
A very lightly raced field but I like the look of the White trained Kenshin Maru who is a well bred three year old by Snitzel and made his racing debut here over this trip a couple weeks ago where he went forward from the wide gate and set third with no cover and was then held up at a crucial stage but kept battling along and wasn’t beaten far away. He raced quite greenly then and I expect the stable to have sharpened him up for this now, heaps of upside and they draw barrier three in a smaller field now. He should be tough to beat.

THE DANGER - #3 - Totspur
Always respecting Bjorn Baker when he sends runners up North and I think Totspur is set to peak here off the back of two runs to kick off his career. He finished midfield behind The Punisher on debut where he needed the run before racing at Ipswich last time out where he relished a hot speed after being taken back from the wide gate and ran on well behind the smart Black Minto who ran well in Saturday grade last weekend. He continues to improve massively between runs and should be nearing his peak now.

VALUE BET  - #5 - Planned Encounter
Planned Encounter was with Kacy Fogden for a few quiet trials earlier this year before being sold to Neil Hocking and is now ready for start one and can surprise at big odds here. He gets in at just 55kg for this assignment and his last trial saw him just box along the speed when ridden very quietly but I really like the way his stride looked and I think the stable knows more about this horse than they are letting on. Not sure he’s worth betting on but watch for him.

BEST BET - #3 - Blazen Boots
I think Blazen Boots can atone here as Tony Gollan sends an assault to this race. He switched camps from Waller to Gollan at the beginning of the year and resumed off of a long 22 week spell at this track over the 1350m where he powered home from back in the run and just kept finding the line for a strong win. Last time out he got way too far back in the run from the wide gate and did it tough from deep but still kept finding the line strongly to end up fourth in a big field and wasn’t beaten far away. He gets in at just 55kg now with the claim from Molloy and is set to peak here third up. Top chance.

THE DANGER - #8 - Kokonotsu
Kokonotsu is the other Tony Gollan runner that dominates the first two lines of betting in this race and I think he doesn’t need to improve too sharply to be winning this. He was sold from Wendy Kelly to Gollan earlier this year and hasn’t put in a bad performance in two runs for the stable. He ran at the end of June at Eagle Farm first up for the camp when beating all but the winner in a smart Ocean Zar before running in a strong maiden here at this trip under Angela Jones where he sat box speed and gave a kick in the straight to win well. He will be at peak fitness now and Gollan wouldn’t place him at this distance again if he didn’t think he was a winning shot.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Mooloolaba
Mooloolaba has been racing in much softer company than this but the splits he has been clocking read as some of the best in these fields and I think he has a very solid chance of winning at a huge price. He had his first run for Jenkins in late June where he looked to need the run and then was afforded a three week break from racing before stepping out over the mile at Ipswich last time out and sat on the leaders’ heels into the straight and broke away at the 350m to be never in doubt from there. He will have more to offer hard fit and third up now and I think he can speck at a price.

BEST BET - #3 - Baldassare (BEST BET)
You would imagine it would be quite tough to beat the Rob Heathcoate trained Baldasarre here from barrier two with Thornton aboard and getting in at just 56.5kg he should be ultra competitive. He resumed off of a 17 week spell where the market had him to run well and he did, when sitting boxing seat and chasing hard but Orman had You’ll Be Mist with a perfect steer and he just held on when Baldassare was coming on. He’s won second up and placed closely from two second up runs and with natural improvement and a good gate now I think he is one of the better betting spots on the card.

THE DANGER - #2 - Immoral 
Tony Gollan and Jimmy Orman are just a lethal combination, especially up here and last start winner Immoral can make it two in a row here. He was six weeks between runs when he stepped out at this distance at Rockhampton where Angela Jones had him shift out wider from an already wide run and hit the line very hard in the last 200m to clock decent splits and get the money in a bob of the head finish. They have given him another 4 week break off the back of that effort, he gets Orman on now and will surely be strong throughout the run.

VALUE BET - #10 - Zhuang Shi 
Zhuang Shi can resume as a winner here for the Kendrick stable. He’s a good fresh horse who is lightly raced, with just the seven career starts for two wins and one of those came at the beginning of last prep at the Sunshine Coast over this distance where he looks to have been similarly set up for this as he was for that. He looked to be moving along very nicely in a trial at the Sunny Coast last week and I would be watching closely what the market does with him.
