Caulfield Racecourse is located in Melbourne’s south-east just 9km from the capital and is operated by the Melbourne Racing Club. Caulfield is one of Australia’s most famous tracks able to hold a crowd of 50,000+. The Caulfield track is host to the prestigious Caulfield Cup Carnival in October.

In the early 2000s, the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) and the Victorian Racing Industry funded a redevelopment of the Caulfield Racecourse with major upgrades to the track and all facilities. As part of the redevelopment, the MRC also built a second turf track at Sandown. Today the MRC organises over 70 race meetings a year at Caulfield, Sandown and Mornington racecourses.

Starting from late January, Caulfield Racecourse is host to multiple featured events during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival. The major days at Caulfield Racecourse during the Caulfield Autumn Carnival include CF Orr Stakes Day, the first Group 1 race of the calendar year, as well as Blue Diamond Stakes Day, Victoria’s richest race for 2-year-olds.

CF Orr Stakes Day
Held in early February, the first Group 1 race meeting of the year kicks off the Melbourne autumn racing carnival at Caulfield Racecourse, with 8 group grade races on the day including the namesake Group 1 weight-for-age race

Blue Diamond Stakes Day

Caulfield Racecourse Spring Carnival

Caulfield Racecourse again plays a major part in the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, Australia’s biggest racing carnival. The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is held every year from mid-August through to September providing four months of the best racing and betting action for punters.

The third and final day of the Caulfield Carnival is the biggest event at Caulfield Racecourse in the Melbourne spring racing calendar. Host to the $5 million Caulfield Cup, the richest handicap race ran over 2400m. The cup is a highly competitive race and an important lead-up to the crown jewel of Melbourne’s spring carnival, the Melbourne Cup, as results in the Caulfield Cup can grant qualification into the Melbourne Cup.

The Caulfield race track is a large sweeping track with five major turns, the track has a circumference of 2080 metres, with the home straight measuring 367 metres. Races are run in an anti-clockwise direction with starting chutes located at the 1200m, 1400m and 2000m starts. 

The long green grass at Caulfield Racecourse is usually rated towards the softer side of Good. When rated heavy runners will try to avoid the soft part of the ground close to the fence especially if the rail is positioned further out. The Caulfield track is big enough to give runners the chance to make up ground nevertheless the track tends to favour horses that can lead or run on with the pace.

Caulfield Race Track Starting Positions

• 1000m/1100m/1200m: The start is located in a chute off the course proper on the left side of the  Caulfield track at the top of a long straight. Inside barriers only have a slight advantage with a good start being key here.
• 1400m: Located in a small chute off the back of the course proper (as seen in our Caulfield track map) with a small 200m straight the first turn. Inside barriers can be important as runners who take a leading position before the first turn present a clear advantage. If the rail is positioned out 5 metres or more it can be a hard task for runners to make up ground in the home straight.
• 1600m: This start is located in the back section of the Caulfield race track, with only a 200 metre run to the first turn, making an inside barrier a slight advantage
• 1800m: Similar to the 1600m start but with a 400 metre straight before the first turn, most horses will have their chance so barrier draws aren’t of much importance.
• 2000m: This start is located on the right side of the course, just past the winning post. When the rail is true the racing is generally fair but racing on pace will become more of an advantage as the rail gets further out so an inside barrier can be key.
• 2400m: The famous Caulfield Cup start is located at the top of the home straight with a run of 300 metres before the first turn, the runners complete a full lap of the Caulfield track so most runners should get their chance, however racing in the front of the field is still preferred so runners drawn wide will have a harder task.

Car:

Caulfield Racecourse is a 20-minute car trip south-east of the Melbourne centre, public parking is available at the track on race days in the Centre Car Park which opens at 9 am (entrance via the roundabout on the corner of Kambrook Road and Glen Eira Road).

Tram:

Patrons can catch the Route 3 or 3a tram from the city that travels along Swanston Street and St Kilda Road and get off at Stop 56, a short walk from Caulfield Racecourse. The Route 3 tram runs on weekdays and Route 3a runs on weekends.

Train:

Frankston, Dandenong, Cranbourne and Pakenham train lines depart from Flinders Street and provide a 15-minute trip to Caulfield Station which is located opposite Caulfield Racecourse.

Bus:

SmartBus Route 900 provides bus access to Caulfield Racecourse and can be caught from Stud Park Shopping Centre, Monash University (Clayton), Wellington Road and Chadstone Shopping Centre
