I could really make a case for at least four or five of the runners in the Golden Rose Stakes, but for my best bet, I’m siding with King Colorado. King Colorado is on the second line of betting at the moment, with odds of $4.40. He is lightly raced and I think that works in his favour here.

The Group 1 winner has been kept fresh for this one after being sent to the trials. He will have a lot in the tank for this one and will need every bit of it considering the talent that lines up here. King Colorado is just as talented as the rest of them, so I’m expecting a barn-storming finish from him.

Golden Rose Stakes Next Best - Shinzo

After a lot of umming and ahhing, I have landed on Shinzo as my next best. He has put together an excellent trial recently, beating the likes of Zaaki and Going Global. The 1,400m could be a little short for him first-up, but he is presenting some good value in my opinion, listed at $6.00, at the time of writing.

The Golden Slipper winner has some extra incentive as he is still in the running for the $5 million “Golden” bonus if he can win this race and then The Golden Eagle as a 4YO. Jockey Ryan Moore must think he has a chance considering he’s travelled from England to keep the ride.

Golden Rose Stakes Best Roughie - Encap

The roughie I’m liking the look of the most for the Golden Rose Stakes in 2023 has to be Encap, who is currently listed at odds of $15, at the time of writing. If you saw what Encap did in the Ming Dynasty Stakes earlier this month, you’ll know why I’m putting him up as my best roughie.

On the same track, Encap burst through his competitors for an epic win! He’ll get a similar run here I think, with barrier three drawn. Yes, he is on the smaller side, but you have to love his determination and character. I think Encap can certainly run another massive race in the Golden Rose Stakes!

For the 2023 edition of the Golden Rose Stakes, we saw 13 runners confirmed, with no emergencies. Before the race, we saw one runner scratched, Libertad, so this dropped the final field down to 12 as there weren’t any emergencies listed to take his place.

We don’t usually see blow-out roughies win the Golden Rose Stakes either. Since 2008, there have only been two winners that jumped with double-digit odds. In the same time frame, we have seen five favourites go on to win the race. 

The Golden Rose Stakes has been around since 1978 and in that time, we’ve seen some of the best horses going around compete. There are plenty of Golden Rose Stakes horses that we could feature in this section, but we’ve made the tough decisions and narrowed it down to just a handful.

Kingston Town was named the 1980 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year and also won the Golden Rose Stakes in 1979. He ended his career with a very impressive record of 41:30-5-2 and he won races like the Cox Plate, the Tancred Stakes, the King Charles III Stakes and the Rosehill Guineas.

Flying Spur - 1995

Flying Spur won six races throughout his career and ended up gaining a total of over $2 million in prize money. He was named the Leading Sire in Australia during the 2006/07 season and won races like the Golden Slipper, the Australian Guineas and the All Aged Stakes.

Zoustar - 2013

Zoustar was a multiple-Group 1 winning horse but is mainly known as one of the most successful sires who has sired multiple stakes winners. He was lightly raced, only competing in nine races, but some of the races he won included; the Coolmore Stud Stakes along with the Golden Rose Stakes in 2013.

Trapeze Artist - 2017

Trapeze Artist won four Group 1 races throughout his career, including the 2017 Golden Rose Stakes. He amassed almost $6 million in prize money throughout his career and ended with a record of 20:7-1-3. Some of the biggest races he won in his career included; the TJ Smith Stakes, the All Aged Stakes and the Canterbury Stake.

The Autumn Sun - 2018

The Autumn Sun was crowned the Australian Champion 3YO Colt/Gelding during the 2018/19 season and he also won the Golden Rose Stakes during this time. He placed in every race he competed in and actually won all of them except one! Some of the key Group 1 races he won included; the J J Atkins, the Randwick Guineas and the Rosehill Guineas.

The Golden Rose Stakes odds will tell you which runners are more favoured in the market. For example, if the runner you’re looking at has odds of $2.05, then they are likely to be the favourite and therefore the most likely to win according to bookies. 

Remember though, just because a runner is more likely to win doesn’t mean they will actually go on to win. Roughies win all the time in horse racing, so it can pay to look around at other runners. As tradition dictates, 3YOs typically make their way to the Golden Rose Stakes through a lead-up run in the Group 2 Run To The Rose, a riveting 1,200m battle contested at Rosehill a fortnight prior.
