Rosehill Racecourse Featured Race Days

Rosehill hosts some fascinating races with some 25 Group 1 races per year. Rosehill plays a key part in the Sydney Spring and Autumn Racing Carnivals.

The good thing about many race days at Rosehill is that the ticket includes travel on trains, buses, light rail and ferries, just show your ticket to transport staff when boarding.

Rosehill Racecourse Spring Carnival:

The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, over a 200-year period, has grown from a few races, to a three-day event to now two whole months.

The timing allows for racers to come to some of the NSW events before heading down to Victoria for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Golden Rose Stakes– 23/09/2023

This race is run at set weights over 1,400m for 3-year-olds with a prize money of $1m. It was first run in 1978 as the Peter Pan Stakes (after the Melbourne Cup Winner (1932 & 1934)). It was both renamed in 2003 to the Golden Rose Stakes and dropped from Group 2 to Unlisted but with a larger purse.

Golden Eagle – 28/10/2023

This $10m thoroughbred race for 4-year-olds, was first run in 2019, over 1,500m at set weights. The prize money size makes it the 4th richest turf race in the world, so it attracts a tremendous amount of interest and has put Rosehill on the racing map. No horse can win it twice, no jockey nor trainer has won it twice.

Five Diamonds  – 04/11/2023

This is a new $2m race, announced in 2022, for 5-year-olds run at Set Weights plus penalties over 1,800m.

Suggestions have been made that is race has been put on the card to detract trainers from sending their horses to Victoria.

Although numerous horses have won the race in consecutive years and others have won twice non-consecutively, in the 1930s one horse, Lough Neagh won it 3 times over a 5-year period.

This race can be a pointer to the Tancred Stakes which takes place a week later.

The Galaxy – 18/03/2023

A $1m race for 3-year-olds and over, this is the Sydney Autumn Carnival´s only Group One sprint race over 1,100m.

The winner of The Galaxy receives ballot exemption into the $3m 1,200m TJ Smith Stakes, which is held at Royal Randwick a month later.

Golden Slipper- 18/03/2023

The big race of the day, the $5m 1,200m Golden Slipper is the world´s richest race for 2-year-olds therefore THE premier race for 2 year-olds race in Australia.

The first race was held in 1957 over 6 furlongs (1,207m), in 1973 it became 1,200m and in 1979 a Group One race. No horse can win it twice and although numerous jockeys have won it 3 or 4 times, Gai Waterhouse has trained even more winners (currently 7).

A week the Golden Slipper weekend, this 2,400m Group One, for 3-year-olds and over, under Weight For Age conditions takes place with $1.5m in prize money.

Only 2 horses have won the race twice and both were in consecutive years (1996/1997 & 1999/2000).

The winner is exempt from the ballot for 2 races, the 2,000m Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the 3,200m Sydney Cup. They will not enter both races as they occur on the same day!

Rosehill Racecourse Track Map

Rosehill Racecourse Starting Positions:

Rosehill Gardens is an almost square clockwise track of 2,048 metres with sweeping turns, 4 separate shutes and a long 408m home straight. This long straight does give a chance for swoopers to race powerfully to the finish. The clockwise direction means it is often advantageous for those running on the inside.

900m, for the speedsters and open trials, starts in its own independent shute, outside the main track, but within metresit joins the main track. The first 400m metres is straight and then a long right-hand bend, which will favour those on the inside, before the 408m finishing straight.

1100m and1200m start are also in their own independent shute, but inside the main track and at an angle to the main track, so a 300m (for the 1100m) straight is followed by a long right-hand bend before the finishing straight. At these distances inside barriers will be slightly advantaged due to the orientation of the race.

1300m and 1400m start on the main racetrack, whereas the 1500m has its own 50m shute before joining the main track. There are 2 long right-hand bends with a 200m straight in between, before the finishing straight.

1800m and 1900m start on the main racetrack, whereas the 2000m has its own 50m shute before joining the main track. These longer races have to ensure 3 long right-hand bends with a 250m straight for the 1800m (350m for the 1900m, etc) before the first right-hand bend and then they pass the 1400m start point and run the same format.

2400m, for the stayers, start 352m before the winning post on the main racetrack. The starting stalls are positioned just before the front of the grandstand, on the home straight. In theory, starting gates for such a long race should not hold much significance, however, analysis over time has revealed that a large percentage of winners start from low barrier numbers.

There are the most frequently used starting positions, but there is also capability for 1350m (which of course would be between the 1300m and 1400m start positions), as well as the 3200m which starts 3200m - 2048m = 1152m before the finish line followed by a full lap of the course, or to put it another way 148m in front of the 1300m start.
