The Coolmore Stud Stakes 2023 will soon be upon us on Saturday 4th November 2023 and will be run at Flemington Racecourse, Victoria. For those who are new to racing or not yet familiar with the Coolmore Stud Stakes, registered as the Ascot Vale Stakes, it is worth explaining.
The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a Group 1 1200m race, for 3-year-olds at Set Weights, that always takes place as part of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, specifically on the day of the Victoria Derby on the weekend before the Melbourne Cup, which could be the last Saturday in October or the first Saturday in November. First run over 160 years ago, this is a horse race with a long tradition.
This race, for the speedsters, was originally an Autumn Carnival race for 2-year-olds, but, after the 1965 race, this all changed, it was not run for 4 years. Then in 1969 it returned in the Victorian Spring meeting schedule as a race for 3-year-olds (!).
The name Coolmore Stud pays reference/homage to the headquarters of the world’s largest thoroughbred breeding business in Tipperary, Ireland. This unbelievable operation has several branches, one being, Coolmore Australia, which is in the Hunter Valley, NSW.
This is of course a race that puts the fast horses through their paces and with $2m Australian as the prize purse it receives a lot of attention. The most recent winner, In Secret has amassed over $4.5m in prize money and is certainly an elite race horse. The previous 2 winners, Home Affairs and September Run have both individually amassed over $2.5m in prize money when the Coolmore Stud Stakes prize money was less that today´s pool.
