The Coolmore Stud Stakes is one of a host of Group 1 races held on what is the Victoria Derby Day, which in itself is the start of the Flemington Melbourne Cup Spring Carnival week. The 3 Group 1 races on the day are the 2000m Coolmore Stud Stakes, the $1m 1600m Empire Rose Stakes for the fillies & mares and the $2.1m 2500m Victoria Derby for the stayers. The 9 race card is unique in that EVERY race is a Group level race with 2 Group 2s and 4 Group 3s. 

Some interesting facts about the Coolmore Stud Stakes: 

• Two of the most recent winners have been fillies – In Secret and September Run. 
• James McDonald has been in the saddle for the last 2 winners. 
• Between 1969 and 2005 the race was run in the spring, but in September. From 2006, it is now part of the Spring Racing Carnival. 
• The race became a Group 1 race in 2006, prior to that, between 1979 and 2005, it was a Group 2. 
• When the race changed months in 2006, there was a swap and the race moving in the other direction was the Group 3 1200m L’Oreal Plate for 3-year-olds which was immediately renamed the Danehill Stakes, which in 2009 was upgraded to Group 2 and dropped to 1100m in 2021.

• The Set Weights are 57kg for colts & geldings and 55kg for fillies.

• There was over a century of race events for 2-year-olds continuously from 1863 to 1966.  

The 2023 Victoria Derby race day in total will boast an eye-watering prize pool of $7 million AUD, with just over $2m in the Coolmore Stud Stakes alone which is regarded as one of the best 3-year-old Set Weights races in Australia. The field for the race is expected to be announced on the Tuesday before the race, Tuesday 24th October. 

There is usually a good chance that 3-year-olds who contested 1200m The Everest, 3 weeks earlier may enter the Coolmore Stud Stakes as is this case this year with Cylinder and Shinzo both entering. 

In the last 10 years between 8 and 20 runners have appeared at the starting gate for each race.

An interesting fact is that 3 of the last 10 favourites, have won the race. 

The 2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes nominations are taken in the Monday (30th October) and the barrier draw is planned for the Wednesday (1st November). The Colmore Stud Stakes has a long history covering 3 centuries, with the first race in 1863 and an almost annual event ever since.  

Every race has been run at Flemington, but over varying distances and all races have been for the speedsters. The 1863 race started with 5 furlongs (1006m), the length was increased to 6 furlongs (1207m) in 1872, then in 1972 with the metric system it was shortened to 1200m. The race has been this same distance ever since with one exception, in 1985, when it was shortened to 1170m. 

3 favourites have won in the last 10 years and 4 other favourites have finished 2nd. So 7 favourites that finish in the top 2 in the last 10 races is impressive.  

Recent successful jockeys have included James Macdonald who rode the winner of the last 2 races!  

If you are looking at successful trainers, look no further than Chris Waller who trained the 2013-2015, 2020 & 2021 winners and Chris has Shinzo in 2023. James Cummings trained the 2022 winner and has Cylinder this year. 

Saturday 4th November 2023 will be one of the racing events on the Victorian racing calendar with a 9 race card and all are Group races, 4 Group 3s, 2 Group 2s and 3 Group 1s being the Coolmore Stud Stakes, the Empire Rose Stakes and the Victoria Derby.
