Coolmore Stud Stakes Betting Sites, Odds, Tips & Information

The Coolmore Stud Stakes 2023 will soon be upon us on Saturday 4th November 2023 and will be run at Flemington Racecourse, Victoria. For those who are new to racing or not yet familiar with the Coolmore Stud Stakes, registered as the Ascot Vale Stakes, it is worth explaining.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a Group 1 1200m race, for 3-year-olds at Set Weights, that always takes place as part of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, specifically on the day of the Victoria Derby on the weekend before the Melbourne Cup, which could be the last Saturday in October or the first Saturday in November. First run over 160 years ago, this is a horse race with a long tradition.

This race, for the speedsters, was originally an Autumn Carnival race for 2-year-olds, but, after the 1965 race, this all changed, it was not run for 4 years. Then in 1969 it returned in the Victorian Spring meeting schedule as a race for 3-year-olds (!).

The name Coolmore Stud pays reference/homage to the headquarters of the world’s largest thoroughbred breeding business in Tipperary, Ireland. This unbelievable operation has several branches, one being, Coolmore Australia, which is in the Hunter Valley, NSW.

This is of course a race that puts the fast horses through their paces and with $2m Australian as the prize purse it receives a lot of attention. The most recent winner, In Secret has amassed over $4.5m in prize money and is certainly an elite race horse. The previous 2 winners, Home Affairs and September Run have both individually amassed over $2.5m in prize money when the Coolmore Stud Stakes prize money was less that today´s pool.

The Feature Race - Coolmore Stud Stakes 2024

1200m Coolmore Stud Stakes

Date: Saturday 4th November
Time: TBD
Prize Money: $2m AUD

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is one of a host of Group 1 races held on what is the Victoria Derby Day, which in itself is the start of the Flemington Melbourne Cup Spring Carnival week. The 3 Group 1 races on the day are the 2000m Coolmore Stud Stakes, the $1m 1600m Empire Rose Stakes for the fillies & mares and the $2.1m 2500m Victoria Derby for the stayers. The 9 race card is unique in that EVERY race is a Group level race with 2 Group 2s and 4 Group 3s.

Some interesting facts about the Coolmore Stud Stakes:

  • Two of the most recent winners have been fillies – In Secret and September Run.
  • James McDonald has been in the saddle for the last 2 winners.
  • Between 1969 and 2005 the race was run in the spring, but in September. From 2006, it is now part of the Spring Racing Carnival.
  • The race became a Group 1 race in 2006, prior to that, between 1979 and 2005, it was a Group 2.
  • When the race changed months in 2006, there was a swap and the race moving in the other direction was the Group 3 1200m L’Oreal Plate for 3-year-olds which was immediately renamed the Danehill Stakes, which in 2009 was upgraded to Group 2 and dropped to 1100m in 2021.
  • If you are looking for a potential winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes check out the Danehill Stakes result. Previous winners have been Giga Kick and Black Caviar, small world hey ?
  • The Set Weights are 57kg for colts & geldings and 55kg for fillies.
  • There were no spectators for the 2020 race, I think we all know why.
  • 2023 will be the 54th year of the race for 3-year-olds over 1200m, except for 1985 when the distance was 1170m.
  • There was over a century of race events for 2-year-olds continuously from 1863 to 1966.

The 2023 Victoria Derby race day in total will boast an eye-watering prize pool of $7 million AUD, with just over $2m in the Coolmore Stud Stakes alone which is regarded as one of the best 3-year-old Set Weights races in Australia. The field for the race is expected to be announced on the Tuesday before the race, Tuesday 24th October.

There is usually a good chance that 3-year-olds who contested 1200m The Everest, 3 weeks earlier may enter the Coolmore Stud Stakes as is this case this year with Cylinder and Shinzo both entering.

In the last 10 years between 8 and 20 runners have appeared at the starting gate for each race.

An approximate breakdown of the prize money for the 2022 Coolmore Stud Stakes was as follows:

PlacingPrize Money
1st$650,000
2nd$190,000
3rd$97,000
4th$48,000
5th$27,000

Where to Bet on the 2024 Coolmore Stud Stakes

Here is a simple strategy for deciphering the complex world of picking a bookie. At the end of the day it comes down to 2 things:

Firstly, which bookie is going to offer you the best value for betting with them on feature races such as the 2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes race, bonus bets may come into play here.

Secondly, which are your preferred markets or bets, that you wish to place on the race.

So you are trying to extract the most profit from your bets, if there are bonus bets on win odds for runners coming 2nd or 3rd or even 4th, then you have some additional cover that could be worth exploring with the compromise of possibly lower odds being available from those bookmakers.

Compare the odds for your picks across as many available Australian bookmakers as you can be bothered with or are already a member. For reference, we have a Bookmaker Review page that includes a pros and cons list for every single Australian bookmaker that offers racing markets. Additionally, our best horse racing betting sites include feature in-depth reviews of specific bookmakers that we care to highlight. Some of these bookmakers include PlayUp, BetGalaxy , Vicbet, Unibet, and Dabble. all of which I have included a sneak peak of their pros and cons lists. Be sure to click on any of these tables to visit our full bookmaker reviews.

Bet on whichever available Australian bookmaker offers you the best price for your preferred bets on races. The longer you take to find the bookmaker and associated odds, the longer the process will take.

Another option is to simply bet with whichever bookie you are used to, or rather, most comfortable with. They may or may not offer the best odds, but it is a bookmaker than you know well and you can easily navigate their webpages to place bets.

Flemington Racecourse has been in operation since 1840, and is the longest course in Australia. Flemington Racecourse, in addition to being a horse racing facility, was added to the National Heritage List in 2006 as a centre for traditional and cultural celebration.

Flemington Racecourse makes up one of the four metropolitan tracks in Victoria that together hold both the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival and the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Flemington Racecourse is most famous for hosting the world-famous Melbourne Cup, on the first Tuesday of November each year, as well as many other high-profile races, including the Victoria Derby and Australian Cup, just to mention a few.

Visit our Flemington Racecourse feature length review for important information on the track’s history, biggest races, and differentiating factors in comparison to other esteemed racing venues across Australia.

Race History of the Coolmore Stud Stakes

The Colmore Stud Stakes has a long history covering 3 centuries, with the first race in 1863 and an almost annual event ever since.

Every race has been run at Flemington, but over varying distances and all races have been for the speedsters. The 1863 race started with 5 furlongs (1006m), the length was increased to 6 furlongs (1207m) in 1872, then in 1972 with the metric system it was shortened to 1200m. The race has been this same distance ever since with one exception, in 1985, when it was shortened to 1170m.

3 favourites have won in the last 10 years and 4 other favourites have finished 2nd. So 7 favourites that finish in the top 2 in the last 10 races is impressive.

Recent successful jockeys have included James Macdonald who rode the winner of the last 2 races!

If you are looking at successful trainers, look no further than Chris Waller who trained the 2013-2015, 2020 & 2021 winners and Chris has Shinzo in 2023. James Cummings trained the 2022 winner and has Cylinder this year.
