CF Orr Stakes Best Bet - Mr Brightside

Could it be any other runner for my top tip for the CF Orr Stakes? Mr Brightside is the heavy favourite, currently listed at $1.85 with PlayUp. He just oozes class, and I think he has way more class than all the other runners. Loves Caulfield Racecourse, just wins. But, is Mr Brightside any true value? Probably not. I think he is a safe bet though, maybe include in some exotics for more value.

CF Orr Stakes Next Best - Veight

When there’s a runner that is really short in the market, it means that all other contenders are basically roughie odds! Veight is currently listed at odds of $7.00, which is on the equal third line of betting. This youngster has performed well as of late. He won first-up at Moonee Valley, so hopefully that’s a sign of things to come. I think he’ll like the step up to 1,400m, so including him as my next best bet.

CF Orr Stakes Best Roughie - Atishu

She had an excellent Spring, which included a victory in the Group 1 Champions Stakes, over the likes of Duais, Zaaki and West Wind Blows. Atishu performs her best at this distance, and while she is known to improve in her later runs, I think she will put on a show here and claim a place.

Vo Rogue - 1988-1990

Vo Rogue won the CF Orr Stakes three times in a row, so there was no chance that we couldn’t include him in our list of notable horses! Trained by Vic Rail, Vo Rogue had a record of 83: 26-14-9 and won many Group 1 races. Some Group 1 races he even won on multiple occasions. 

He was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2019, and there’s even a race named after him, the Vo Rogue Plate at Gold Coast Racecourse. The Vo Rogue Plate is a Group 3 race worth $300,000.

Lonhro - 2004

Nicknamed “The Black Flash” Lonhro had a very successful career, which included winning the CF Orr Stakes in 2004. He is another multiple Group 1 winner and ended his career with a record of 35:26-3-2. In 2004, he won three different Group 1s, which was off the back of four Group 1 victories in 2003!

In the end, Lonhro amassed a total of $5,790,510 in prize money. Like Vo Rogue, Lonhro was also inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, back in 2014. In total, Lonhro had 11 wins at Group 1 level.

Black Caviar - 2012

There is no way you can go past one of the greatest racehorses of all time, Black Caviar. Black Caviar famously has never lost a race, and that helped her gain an eye-popping amount of prize money, $6,697,436 to be exact.

There is even a Group 1 named after her, the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, which is run each year in February, usually one week after the CF Orr Stakes. Black Caviar was also inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2013.

Black Heart Bart - 2017

Purchased for just $20,000, Black Heart Bart ended up with career prize money of $4,818,580. Talk about an epic return on investment! He had a record of 62:17-15-4, which included multiple Group 1 wins.

Other Group 1 races Black Heart Bart won throughout his career included; Memsie Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Futurity Stakes and The Goodwood. Black Heart Bart is now a happily retired horse living his best life out on a cattle farm in Western Australia.

There are a lot of different factors that go into the odds for each runner. Long before the CF Orr Stakes field is finalised, all the main horse racing betting apps will have markets open for you to bet on.

The CF Orr Stakes is steeped in history, and it’s a very interesting one at that. One of the first (and biggest) races on the calendar, the CF Orr Stakes has been running for around 100 years. It is on the fringes of the most interesting horse racing carnivals in Australia.

This race was named in honour of Charles F. Orr, who was a board member, chairman and secretary of the Williamstown Racing Club. He became a member in 1871 and then was the chairman for a total of 14 years.

The race has been run at several different tracks throughout its history but has been run at Caulfield since 1997 (except in 2023 where the race was temporarily moved due to track reconstruction). The CF Orr Stakes also wasn’t always a Group 1 race. It was only upgraded to a Group 1 in 1993.

Being one of the first key races of the calendar year, it is our first chance to look at the expected performance level of several horses. The Autumn Racing Carnival features some key races, like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Doncaster Mile and Golden Slipper.

So, who won the CF Orr Stakes in 2024? Well, all you favourite punters out there will be cheering because it was the heavy favourite, Mr Brightside, who got the chocolates! It wasn’t a race without street through for those who backed Mr Brightside, as he just fought off second place Pride of Jenni, who was 0.1L off the pace.

The win was thanks to a good ride by jockey Craig Williams, and while Pride of Jenni was first at both the 800m and 400m mark, the mare just couldn’t hold on against a fast finishing Mr Brightside. In third place, Buffalo River wasn’t too far off the pace either. The 8YO gelding was only 0.3L away from Group 1 glory!
