About the CF Orr Stakes

There’s no doubt that the CF Orr Stakes is one of the biggest races on the Australian racing calendar each year. The CF Orr Stakes will take place in 2025 on the 8th of February and is one of the first Group One races on the calendar.

The Group 1 race held at Caulfield Racecourse, Victoria has been running for almost a century (the inaugural race in 1925) and marks the very beginning of the Autumn Racing Carnival. There are many key races held at Caulfield Racecourse, and it is one of the top tracks in the country.

A quick look at the honour roll will show you just how star-studded the fields of the CF Orr Stakes have been for many decades now. We list all the recent winners of this Group 1 race later on, so make sure you check that out as well!

The prize money for this weight-for-age race is currently sitting at $750,000 and shares the same race day as another key race, the Inglis Millennium, which is worth a cool $2,000,000. Another thing to note about the CF Orr Stakes is that the race took place at Sandown Hillside Racecourse in 2023, as track reconstruction was taking place at Caulfield Racecourse.

Be sure to tune in on February 8, 2025, so you don’t miss out on one of the best races showcased on the Australian horse racing calendar. CF Orr Stakes Best Bet - Mr Brightside

Could it be any other runner for my top tip for the CF Orr Stakes? Mr Brightside is the heavy favourite, currently listed at $1.85 with PlayUp. He just oozes class, and I think he has way more class than all the other runners. Loves Caulfield Racecourse, just wins. But, is Mr Brightside any true value? Probably not. I think he is a safe bet though, maybe include in some exotics for more value.

CF Orr Stakes Next Best - Veight

When there’s a runner that is really short in the market, it means that all other contenders are basically roughie odds! Veight is currently listed at odds of $7.00, which is on the equal third line of betting. This youngster has performed well as of late. He won first-up at Moonee Valley, so hopefully that’s a sign of things to come. I think he’ll like the step up to 1,400m, so including him as my next best bet.

CF Orr Stakes Best Roughie - Atishu

She had an excellent Spring, which included a victory in the Group 1 Champions Stakes, over the likes of Duais, Zaaki and West Wind Blows. Atishu performs her best at this distance, and while she is known to improve in her later runs, I think she will put on a show here and claim a place.

CF Orr Stakes Betting

Betting is in our blood here at OnlyRacing. There are many different markets you can bet on and a wide range of betting apps to choose from as well. We want to ensure you get the most out of not just the feature race, but all other races on the day for CF Orr Stakes day at Caulfield Racecourse.

We’ve put together a handful of market suggestions to get on come race day:

  • Quaddie at Caulfield Racecourse.
  • Quinella/ Trifecta/ First Four in the CF Orr Stakes race.
  • Fixed Win/ Place bets on your chosen runners in the CF Orr Stakes as well as across the whole meet at Caulfield Racecourse.
  • Multi bet across several races at the Caulfield Racecourse meet.

It’s important to note that there are many other options available, but we think those are the best for the CF Orr Stakes. There is something for everyone, the casual punters to the regular punters. So, now you have a better idea of what to bet on, who should you bet with?

It’s a question we get asked a lot, and we find that casual punters in particular struggle with this because you’ve got so many different horse racing betting sites to choose from. With so many options available, the decision can be difficult, but like always, we are here at your service.

We’ve done all the hard work for you, reviewing the best Australian betting sites, and providing in-depth reviews on each of them. After reading our bookie reviews, you’ll have a very good idea about each bookmaker and be able to make an informed decision.

When it comes to bookie accounts, we believe that one is never enough. The more the merrier, we say! This is because there are different betting sites bonuses, odds and more at each bookie. So, if you just had one account, you’re potentially missing out on a better deal.

First up, the bookie we are crushing on at the moment is EliteBet. The detailed form of each runner in every horse race shows just how much focus they have put into creating one of the best betting apps going around.

Volcanobet is another one of our recommended bookies. We love Volcanobet because it brings back the fun of punting. If you’re looking to make some extra cash and have fun while doing it, then you’ll enjoy betting with Volcanobet. Also, don’t forget to check out their betting promotions as well!

If competitive odds are something you want, then BlueBet is the bookie for you. They are known for offering competitive odds. They are also known to offer promotions to get higher odds for the favourite in some races, so keep your eyes peeled for that as well.

So, there are three of our top recommended bookies. There are plenty more where that came from, so if you’re looking for more CF Orr Stakes betting recommendations, check out our “Betting Sites” section above!

CF Orr Stakes Field

The field for the 2025 CF Orr Stakes is not available just yet! While the field isn’t available, we are sure to see a quality group of runners taking part, as we see each year. As well as this, you can also scroll down below and check out the CF Orr Stakes odds, if available. Taking a look at the current odds will give guidance on which horses are likely to be targeting the CF Orr Stakes.

You should know that while the 2025 field is not confirmed for the CF Orr Stakes, there are still going to be fluctuations in the betting odds. Many things can influence the changes in odds, and there could be a lot of late money coming in for one of the runners, which brings down the odds.

No need to wait any longer! Let’s take a look at the CF Orr Stakes 2024 field below (we will display the field for 2025 once available):

In the 2024 edition of the CF Orr, there were just 9 runners in the final field, and there weren’t any scratchings, so all 9 runners jumped. Even though there weren’t any scratchings, we tend to find that scratchings are very commonplace, even in key races like the CF Orr Stakes.

Scratchings happen on the day of the race or even just minutes before the jump. Trust us when we say we know how annoying it can be if the horse you bet on ends up being scratched. But at the end of the day, you will get your cash back into your account, so that’s a positive at least!

The barrier draw is another piece of the puzzle that you should look at when digging into the final field. Although, when it comes to smaller fields, the barrier draw doesn’t have as big of an impact. Some barriers have seen more winners than others, and both trainers and jockeys hope luck is on their side and they draw one of the more successful barriers.

CF Orr Stakes Form Guide

Placing a bet on the CF Orr Stakes? Well, you’ll need to know more details about the form guide and form indicators! All these stats come in handy to find patterns on which runners have the best chances of winning the Group 1 race.

There are so many different paths you can take when looking into the CF Orr Stakes form guide, but the good news is that the experts here at OnlyRacing have done all the hard work for you. Each Group 1 is different and will have various form indicators that are important to look at. So, let’s get cracking!

As the CF Orr Stakes is one of the first major races of the year, the majority of the field will be coming into this race first up. This means it is difficult to know what form each runner is in, and looking into trials is your best bet.

Another good idea is to listen to what the trainer has to say about their horse. What is the target race for the runner? If they are targeting a major race like the Golden Slipper, you’ll get a better idea of how good the trainer thinks their horse is.

There are a couple of lead-up races that runners could come from (or like we previously said, they could be contesting the CF Orr Stakes first up). The race that provides some good form before the CF Orr Stakes is the Group 2 Australia Stakes.

Favourite runners have also usually performed quite well in this race in the past, so looking at the favourite could be a good option. If not the favourite, definitely look for runners that are in single digits, runners with odds of $10 or more haven’t won many times in recent years. In 2024, Mr Brightside was the pre-race favourite and he went on to win the race.

CF Orr Stakes Horses

We see top horses competing in the CF Orr Stakes year in and year out. The honour roll for the CF Orr Stakes is extensive, to say the least and here at OnlyRacing, we have emboldened a handful of different winners from the past who have left a major impact on the horse racing industry.

The goal in mind? To provide some of the top horses that have ever competed (and won) the CF Orr Stakes. Check out the key horses from previous editions of the CF Orr Stakes below:

Vo Rogue - 1988-1990

Vo Rogue won the CF Orr Stakes three times in a row, so there was no chance that we couldn’t include him in our list of notable horses! Trained by Vic Rail, Vo Rogue had a record of 83: 26-14-9 and won many Group 1 races. Some Group 1 races he even won on multiple occasions.

He was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2019, and there’s even a race named after him, the Vo Rogue Plate at Gold Coast Racecourse. The Vo Rogue Plate is a Group 3 race worth $300,000.

Lonhro - 2004

Nicknamed “The Black Flash” Lonhro had a very successful career, which included winning the CF Orr Stakes in 2004. He is another multiple Group 1 winner and ended his career with a record of 35:26-3-2. In 2004, he won three different Group 1s, which was off the back of four Group 1 victories in 2003!

In the end, Lonhro amassed a total of $5,790,510 in prize money. Like Vo Rogue, Lonhro was also inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, back in 2014. In total, Lonhro had 11 wins at Group 1 level.

Black Caviar - 2012

There is no way you can go past one of the greatest racehorses of all time, Black Caviar. Black Caviar famously has never lost a race, and that helped her gain an eye-popping amount of prize money, $6,697,436 to be exact.

There is even a Group 1 named after her, the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, which is run each year in February, usually one week after the CF Orr Stakes. Black Caviar was also inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2013.

Black Heart Bart - 2017

Purchased for just $20,000, Black Heart Bart ended up with career prize money of $4,818,580. Talk about an epic return on investment! He had a record of 62:17-15-4, which included multiple Group 1 wins.

Other Group 1 races Black Heart Bart won throughout his career included; Memsie Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Futurity Stakes and The Goodwood. Black Heart Bart is now a happily retired horse living his best life out on a cattle farm in Western Australia.

CF Orr Stakes Odds

There are a lot of different factors that go into the odds for each runner. Long before the CF Orr Stakes field is finalised, all the main horse racing betting apps will have markets open for you to bet on.

You’ll find that the odds in these horse racing markets will be constantly changing, especially in the days leading up to the race. This means if you see a price you like, better to jump on now, instead of risking the odds shortening even further. Our favourite bookie at the moment, PlayUp is yet to release the odds for the CF Orr Stakes in 2025.

Fluctuations are part of the game when it comes to CF Orr Stakes odds, especially so far out from the event. This is because some of the horses listed in the market may not even end up running in the race. If you bet on the CF Orr Stakes when the market is “Before Noms” the good news is that you’ll get your stake back if your chosen horse doesn’t run.

This is probably the best time to bet on the CF Orr Stakes because you could be picking the eventual favourite for juicy odds, and on the flip side, there’s a smaller risk because if the horse doesn’t run you’ll get your stake back. If you are betting when the market is “All-In”, then you should know that you won’t get your cash back.

While the odds for the 2025 race aren’t available, take a look below to see the odds for the CF Orr Stakes field, a couple of days before the race in 2024:

Mr Brightside$1.85
Pride Of Jenni$6.50
Buffalo River$31

CF Orr Stakes History

The CF Orr Stakes is steeped in history, and it’s a very interesting one at that. One of the first (and biggest) races on the calendar, the CF Orr Stakes has been running for around 100 years. It is on the fringes of the most interesting horse racing carnivals in Australia.

This race was named in honour of Charles F. Orr, who was a board member, chairman and secretary of the Williamstown Racing Club. He became a member in 1871 and then was the chairman for a total of 14 years.

The race has been run at several different tracks throughout its history but has been run at Caulfield since 1997 (except in 2023 where the race was temporarily moved due to track reconstruction). The CF Orr Stakes also wasn’t always a Group 1 race. It was only upgraded to a Group 1 in 1993.

Being one of the first key races of the calendar year, it is our first chance to look at the expected performance level of several horses. The Autumn Racing Carnival features some key races, like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Doncaster Mile and Golden Slipper.

The CF Orr Stakes is just one of many races on the calendar. If you want to learn more about other Group 1 races, our Group One races list has all the details you are looking for. There is barely any rest when it comes to horse racing!

CF Orr Stakes Results

So, who won the CF Orr Stakes in 2024? Well, all you favourite punters out there will be cheering because it was the heavy favourite, Mr Brightside, who got the chocolates! It wasn’t a race without street through for those who backed Mr Brightside, as he just fought off second place Pride of Jenni, who was 0.1L off the pace.

The win was thanks to a good ride by jockey Craig Williams, and while Pride of Jenni was first at both the 800m and 400m mark, the mare just couldn’t hold on against a fast finishing Mr Brightside. In third place, Buffalo River wasn’t too far off the pace either. The 8YO gelding was only 0.3L away from Group 1 glory!
