PlayUp - Playbook

PlayUp produces a blog called The PlayUp Playbook where readers can get recaps, predictions, and advice on upcoming events in sports and horse racing. This blog tipping style is used by a few other bookies, but the PlayUp Playbook is easily one of my favourite sources for horse racing tips because of the quantity and quality of information it offers.

How To Bet on Horse Racing

Traditionally punters would have to travel to the racecourse itself to place bets on horse racing, but these days it’s never been easier to bet on horse racing from the comfort of your own home. In recent years the landscape for online betting sites has really heated up and competition is high, which is great for punters because it means bookies are always coming up with better features and more promotions to stay ahead.

A variety of betting methods are available when betting on horses, ranging from straightforward Win or Place bets to thrilling exotic betting opportunities like Trifectas and Quaddies along with more recent punting innovations like Same Race Multis.

Visit our Horse Racing Bets explained page for more information, we've covered all of the main types of horse racing bets you can make, along with explanations of what each bet type means and how to place exotic bets.

Types Of Horse Racing Bets

Basic Betting Types:

  • Win Betting: Win betting is the most straightforward style of betting, you select a runner in the race to come 1st. Generally, bookmakers accept a minimum bet of $1.
  • Place Betting: Likely the most common bet after win betting, you select a runner to come anywhere between 1st - 3rd when making a place bet. It should be noted that if there are less than 8 runners in the race a place bet only covers 1st and 2nd, 3rd is omitted here.

Exotic Betting Types:

The bet types known as exotics are slightly more complicated than the basic bet types. Consequently, the returns are often much greater. Quaddies are the most popular of these styles of betting, head over to our Daily Tips page to follow our Bi-weekly quaddies. For those that are new to punting it is also the easiest route to follow in these exotic bet types before moving onto more advanced types.

  • QUINELLA:
A quinella is the most simple of the exotic bet types you select however many runners you desire and if any combination of them run 1st and 2nd you win the bet. Naturally, the more runners you add the more combinations there are to win which increases your chances but also spreads the money that you are placing thinner across all combinations.
  • EXACTA:
Similar to a quinella, however this time you select two runners that have to come in the order you select, i.e. selecting one or more runners to come 1st and one or more runners to come 2nd.
  • TRIFECTA:
A trifecta bet is one of the more popular exotic bets, this is where punters select runners to come 1st, 2nd and 3rd. One can place this bet ‘boxed’ which means that the runners can come 1st-3rd in any order to minimise risk further. If placed this way, punters pay $6 to get 100% of the dividend as they can finish in any order, and there are 6 combinations when placing it ‘boxed’.
  • FIRST FOUR:
As the name suggests, a first four is where the punter selects four or more runners (the latter only in the case of it being boxed) to compose the first four runners of the selected race. A boxed first four requires $24 to get 100% of the dividend as there are 24 combinations in which the bet comes in, in any order.

Top Racecourses In Australia

Horse Racing is firmly cemented in Australian culture, as such it’s no surprise that Australia is home to over 360 racecourses, which is the most in the world! Many of the country’s top tracks draw huge attendance on major races days and during racing carnivals.

One of the most famous racecourses in Australia is Flemington Racecourse located in Melbourne. Flemington Racecourse is home to the world’s most famous race, The Melbourne Cup, which is hosts every year in November. Flemington Racecourse also plays a big part in hosting many Group 1 race days during the Spring Racing Carnival and Autumn Racing Carnival.

Sydneys largest racecourse, Randwick Racecourse, is just 5km outside the Sydney CBD and has been hosting horse racing since the early 1800s. Over 21 Group 1 grade races are held at Randwick Racecourse each year, and some of the highest prize money races are held there during the respective Autumn and Spring Racing Carnivals, such as the $15 million The Everest.

Other top horse racing tracks in Australia include the Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide and the Eagle Farm Racecourse in Queensland. For more information on the best racecourses in Australia, visit our Top Tracks page, where we have a ton of information about all the major racecourses.

These carnivals feature some of the best horse racing in the world, and attract large crowds of spectators. The Group 1 races at these carnivals include The Melbourne Cup, the race that stops Australia, as well as the Caulfield Cup and many others.

How to Begin Online Betting?

How To Choose A New Betting Site

The best way to choose a new betting site is by checking our list of the best betting sites in Australia and by visiting our Bookmaker Reviews section to find comprehensive analysis of all the betting sites in Australia.

How To Sign Up To Betting Sites

Once you have read our review on a certain bookmaker and you’ve decided you want to sign up, just follow the links on our site to make a new account;

  1. Once you’ve chosen a new betting site, just click on one of our sign up links on the site to head straight to the bookmaker sign up page.
  2. Once there you should already be on the sign up page, otherwise look for the ‘sign up’ or ‘create account’ buttons somewhere in the top right of the site.
  3. When you are at the create account page, simply enter your details such as name and address and email, at this stage you will also be asked if you wish to set a deposit limit on your account.
  4. Once you have completed the process on the sign up page, you may receive an email to verify your email account, just click the confirmation link in the email you receive from the betting site.
  5. From here your account is ready to go and all you need to do is deposit some funds and also verify your identity, which we cover in the next step.

How To Verify At Betting Sites

When you open a new account at a betting site, you must verify your identity with the bookmaker. The option to do so is generally located directly on your account page; on your account page, there should be a section that displays whether your account is verified; if you are not yet confirmed, there is usually a button such as 'Verify Now.'

Most betting sites will offer an automatic verification option such as a 'Verify Now' button, and when you click it, the bookmaker will use the information you provided to attempt to automatically verify your details against the national verification system. Usually, this happens in seconds, and you won't need to do anything further, but sometimes the automated verification fails and you'll need to supply some additional identifying information, such as your driver's licence or passport number.

We cover the specific method each betting site has to verify in our comprehensive bookmaker reviews, so if you’re having trouble verifying at a particular betting site just check out the ‘How To Verify’ section in our bookmaker reviews.

How To Place A Bet On Betting Sites

To place a bet on an online betting site, you’ll first need to create an account by following one of our sign-up links, once you’ve created an account you just have to deposit some money and you can start browsing the markets for betting options. When you find something you’re interested in, simply click on the odds to add it to your betslip.

On your betslip, you’ll see the bet you selected as well as any other bets you may have picked, simply enter a stake into the bet, and your potential payout will be shown. Once you’re happy with your selections and your stakes, just click ‘Place Bet’ at the bottom of the betslip.

In our comprehensive bookmaker reviews, we cover the specific method for placing a bet at each betting site, so if you're having trouble placing a bet at a particular betting site, just check out the 'How To Place A Bet' section in our review for them.

Banking Options For Betting Sites

Bookmakers offer a variety of deposit and withdrawal options to suit their customer’s needs. The most convenient and fastest deposit method is via credit or debit card, which is available on all betting sites. However, some bookies offer extra deposit options such as PayPal, POLi Banking, and Bank Transfer, with some even allowing you to deposit cash in person at various local outlets.

When it comes to withdrawal options, the most popular method is bank transfer, which all sites offer. A bank transfer withdrawal could be in your account as fast as the next day or take up to 4-5 days depending on your bank. Some betting sites also offer other instant withdrawal options such as PayPal or Osko payments.
