The Invitationis avery new addition to the NSW Spring Racing Carnival having only been announced in July 2021 along with a host of other enhancements to the NSW Spring Racing Carnival. The 1st running was at the Royal Randwick,in October the same year, 2021.

Before getting into the details of the race, it is worth noting the significance of the announcement to Spring Carnival Racing in NSW, as there were also large increases in prize money for a number races including the  Group 2 2000m Hill Stakes and the Group 1 1600m Geroge Main Stakes both doubling from $500,000 to $1m. But the icing on the cake was The Invitation was a prize purse of $2m. There is now a spring program of 8 straight weeks of $1m or more prize money races.

The Invitation is 1,400 metres for 3 year olds and up, both fillies and mares under set weights and penalties. However, this is not a Group 1 race, what makes this event different is that it is Invitation Only for horses from Australia and New Zealand.

The Invitation is made to 12 starters by a panel under the guidance of Racing NSW. Up to 2 emergency runners can also be declared. The prize money on offer certainly helps in attracting top-class horses, trainers and jockeys to New South Wales rather than participate in the Racing Victoria spring program, a battle that continues to develop.

The Invitation 2024

The Invitationusually follows the Champion Stakeson the racedaycard and therefore ensures a great day of racing at Randwick.
The prize money for the Invitation is,needless to say, very generous with:

PlacingPrize Money
1st$1m
2nd$400,000
3rd$200,000
4th$100,000
5th$50,000
6th$40,000
7th- 10th$30,000
11th and 12th$25,000

The race will be held on Saturday 28th October, which, if you follow the big races of NSW or the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, you will know is the same race day as $2m Group 1 Champion Stakes over 2,000m.

So as you see, Saturday 28th October is a really important date in the NSW Spring Carnival in Sydney schedule and will feature a number of other supporting races on the 10 race card.

Where to Bet on the 2024 Invitation

Here is a simple strategy for deciphering the complex world of picking a bookie. At the end of the day it comes down to 2 things:

Firstly, which bookie is going to offer you the best value for betting with them on feature races such as the 2023 Invitationrace, bonus bets may come into play here.

Secondly, which are your preferred markets or bets, that you wish to place on the race.

So you are trying to extract the most profit from your bets, if there are bonus bets on win odds for runners coming 2nd or 3rd or even 4th, then you have some additional cover that could be worth exploring with the compromise of possibly lower odds being available from those bookmakers.

Compare the odds for your picks across as many available betting sites as you can be bothered with or are already a member. For reference, we have a Bookmaker Review page that includes a pros and cons list for every single Australian bookmaker that offers racing markets. Additionally, our betting sites reviews include feature in-depth reviews of specific bookmakers that we care to highlight. Some of these bookmakers include PlayUp, Midasbet, PalmerBet, Unibet, and Winnersbet, all of which I have included a sneak peak of their pros and cons lists. Be sure to click on any of these tables to visit our full bookmaker reviews.

Bet on whichever available Australian horse racing betting site offers you the best price for your preferred bets on races. The longer you take to find the bookmaker and associated odds, the longer the process will take.

Another option is to simply bet with whichever bookie you are used to, or rather, most comfortable with. They may or may not offer the best odds, but it is a bookmaker than you know well and you can easily navigate their webpages to place bets.

Track History off Randwick Racecourse – Home of The Invitation

Royal Randwick Racecourse is one of the most well-known racing venues around the world. The Invitation is seen as THE race for mares and fillies in the NSW Spring Carnival. So it is only fitting that Royal Randwick plays host to this innovative Invitation-only $2m race.

Please visit our Randwick Racecourse feature length review for important information on the track’s history, biggest races, and differentiating factors in comparison to other esteemed racing venues across Australia.

Race History of The Invitation

There have been just 2 races of The Invitation and only 2 horses have been acceptances to both events:

  • Icebath – winner in 2021 – 9th in 2022
  • Forbidden Love – 3rd in 2021 – 6th in 2022

What is interesting is that the winning jockey on both occasions was Kerryn McEvoy, who will be looking for a hat-trick of race wins in 2023.

Apart from Kerryn, 3 other jockeys have ridden in both races, Sam Clipperton (2021 2nd/ 2022 4th), Jason Collett (2021 6th / 2022 5th)& Joshua Parr (9th / 2022 7th). No jockey had ridden the same horse twice.

If you are looking at trainers, John O’Shea could be one to watch as he trained the 2nd in 2021 and the winner in 2022. Chris Waller had 2 horses in 2021 (6th and 10th) and 1 in 2022 (11th), Michael Freedman had 1 horse in 2021(jointly trained with brother Richard) (4th) and 1 in 2022 (6th).

So, as you can see there is not a lot of information or indicators to help a wager for 2023.

One final pointer, since the Invitation is a race under set weights and penalties, it is worth reviewing the weights the horses are given in the week before the race to see if there is anything that may give a weight advantage or is not too onerous compared to recent race form.
