Since 1866, the Doncaster Mile, also known as the Doncaster Handicap, has been one of the premier thoroughbred races in Australia. A true staple for racing enthusiasts around the country, especially in the state of New South Wales. The Doncaster Mile calls the lovely Randwick Racecourse its home and will return there for the 2023 edition of the Doncaster Mile.
As you would expect with the name, the Doncaster Mile, the race itself is run at 1600m, or approximately one mile. Luckily for the winner of the 2023 Doncaster Mile, they will be exempt from ballot for the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. This race is run with an extra 400m tacked on, however gaining automatic entry to the richest race in Autumn (a whopping $5 million AUD in prize money) goes quite nicely with a Doncaster Mile title.
It is also worth discussing what an exciting day it will be at Randwick Racecourse, without even factoring in the Doncaster Mile. On either side of the Doncaster Mile which is Race 8 at Randwick Racecourse on Saturday the 1st of April 2023, the T J Smith Stakes will be run as Race 7, and the Australian Derby as Race 9.
