Doncaster Mile 2023

Since 1866, the Doncaster Mile, also known as the Doncaster Handicap, has been one of the premier thoroughbred races in Australia. A true staple for racing enthusiasts around the country, especially in the state of New South Wales. The Doncaster Mile calls the lovely Randwick Racecourse its home and will return there for the 2023 edition of the Doncaster Mile.

As you would expect with the name, the Doncaster Mile, the race itself is run at 1600m, or approximately one mile. Luckily for the winner of the 2023 Doncaster Mile, they will be exempt from ballot for the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. This race is run with an extra 400m tacked on, however gaining automatic entry to the richest race in Autumn (a whopping $5 million AUD in prize money) goes quite nicely with a Doncaster Mile title.

It is also worth discussing what an exciting day it will be at Randwick Racecourse, without even factoring in the Doncaster Mile. On either side of the Doncaster Mile which is Race 8 at Randwick Racecourse on Saturday the 1st of April 2023, the T J Smith Stakes will be run as Race 7, and the Australian Derby as Race 9. What a treat it will be for all racing fans, especially the ones who are lucky enough to be at Randwick Racecourse on the day of the 2023 Doncaster Mile.

This preview to the 2023 Doncaster Mile takes a deep look into the feature race itself, as well as the favourites, my picks, and how and where you should be betting on the Doncaster Mile at Randwick Racecourse. 1600m R9 Doncaster Mile – 1600m

Time: 5:15pm (AEDT)
Prize Money: $4 million AUD

If you read my introduction to the 2023 Doncaster Mile preview carefully, you would have seen me talking about the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and its lucrative payout for participants as the richest Autumn race in Australia. However, despite my glorifying of the $5 million AUD on offer for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, you simply cannot ignore that there has been a massive jump in prize money for the Doncaster Mile.

In case any of you race fans live under a rock, or you are a more casual fan, Racing New South Wales announced a massive $30 million AUD injection into prize money that has seen the Doncaster Mile jump from $3 million AUD for the 2022 Doncaster Mile, to now boasting $4 million AUD for its participants in the 2023 Doncaster Mile. This will without a doubt attract the nation’s best three years and older thoroughbred racehorses to Randwick Racecourse to battle it out for victory in the 2023 Doncaster Mile.

If you disagree with my picks or wish to seek further analysis for some particular runners in this year’s Doncaster Mile, check out our OnlyRacing Tips page for analysis and picks for the entire meet at Randwick Racecourse on April 1st. For this week, our expert is a specialist in New South Wales Group 1 races, so make sure you pay attention. Without further ado, let us get into my picks for the 2023 Doncaster Mile.

Alligator Blood - BEST BET

This talented six year old Gelding has already amassed an eye-popping $6.5 million AUD over a career 28 races. In that time span, Alligator Blood has won 13 of those races and placed in a further five. That is a win rate of almost 50%. Being based at Randwick Racecourse, where the 2023 Doncaster Mile will be run, is a huge advantage for Alligator Blood.

Coming in at $11.00 to win the Doncaster Mile, according to PlayUp, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained thoroughbred will look to claim victory in the 2023 Doncaster Mile and the largest take from the $5 million AUD up for grabs.

Mr Brightside - NEXT BEST

Ben and JD Hayes have done a fantastic job with the  Flemington Racecourse based Gelding in Mr Brightside. In his five year career, Mr Brightside has won 10 career races and is in impressive form coming into this Doncaster Mile race at Randwick Racecourse.

At the time of writing, Mr Brightside is the odds on favourite to win the 2023 Doncaster Mile. Whilst I am always impressed with this horse, I do believe Alligator Blood is far better value for money to claim victory in the 2023 Doncaster Mile. However, be sure to factor Mr Brightside into your multiples. Ignore at your own peril.

Golden Mile - ROUGHIE PICK

If you have read some of my other Group 1 thoroughbred race previews, you would know I am a huge James Cummings fan and think he is a wonderful trainer who can get the most out of his horses. This can be said for Golden Mile who looks like great value on my book coming into the 2023 Doncaster Mile.

The three-year-old Colt has won over $2.5 million in his 9 race career, taking home the gold in 4 of those races. After a couple of disappointing showings lately, it would be great to see Golden Mile find its feet again and win the 2023 Doncaster Mile. However, I will be betting on Golden Mile to place in the 2023 Doncaster Mile.

Track History of Randwick Racecourse – Home of the Doncaster Mile

At OnlyRacing, we have dedicated pages to the biggest and most prestigious racing venues across Australia. These pages include a thorough analysis of what separates the track from other host venues around the country, as well as noting the most significant races that compete there. I will share some critical information regarding Randwick Racecourse in relation to the 2023 Doncaster Mile, however this is no substitute for our full review of Randwick Racecourse.

A couple of things to note about the track history at Randwick Racecourse when speaking about the Doncaster Mile:

  1. From the years 1879 to 1884, the Doncaster Mile used to be races at 9 furlongs in distance under the name, the Doncaster Handicap. This was officially changed in 2010 to the Doncaster Mile we now know and love.
  2. Although the 1600m Doncaster Mile might not be exactly a mile, it used to be before 1973, back when the imperial system was still preferred over the metric system.
  3. Lastly, the record time a horse has won the Doncaster Mile at Randwick Racecourse was in 1 minute 33.17 seconds. This record was set by Happy Clappy as recently as 2018. This record broke the longstanding 1 minute 33.7 second time set by Belmura Lad back in 1979. Race History of the Doncaster Mile

As one of the most prestigious Group 1 races on the Australian racing calendar, the 2023 Doncaster Mile has a long and storied history dating back to its first race over 150 years ago. Before we get into some of the memorable moments that have helped paint the tapestry of the Doncaster Mile nee Handicap, I will share some of the more interesting end results.

  • In 2015, the meet was shifted to take place on Easter Monday (the 6th of April 2015) due to heavy track conditions the week before. This marked the only change of scheduling in the history of the Doncaster Mile.
  • The only dead heat finish in the Doncaster Mile’s rich history was in only its sixth race ever back in 1871. That year, Sir William and Lottery tied in the Doncaster Mile and shared the spoils.
  • A year prior in the 1870 Doncaster Mile, the fifth all time Doncaster Mile race, Barbelle was crowned the winner after Falcon, who crossed the line first, was disqualified due to interference.

Three memorable moments that have shaped the Doncaster Mile were:

  1. The first ever Doncaster Mile won by legend Dundee in the 1866 Doncaster Mile.
  2. Gunsynd, or more commonly known as Goondiwindi Grey, won the 1972 Doncaster Mile as the highlight of his famed career. Known for boasted a distinctive grey coat, and a balls to the wall style of racing that made him a crowd favourite, Gunsynd’s 1971 Doncaster Mile victory will forever remain ingrained in racing fans’ hearts.
  3. The 1992 iteration of the Doncaster Mile is my personal favourite. With one of the most excited finishes I have ever witnessed, Soho Square won by a nose to claim the 1992 Doncaster Mile at Randwick Racecourse.
