The Australian Derby

The 2023 Australian Derby at Randwick Racecourse will be the 9th race on what promises to be an unforgettable day of racing at the prestigious Sydney racing venue. As one of the oldest races on the New South Wales Group 1 circuit, the Australian Derby first raced in 1861! Sharp ‘N’ Smart  - BEST BET

The odds coming into the 2023 Australian Derby are heavily in the favour of this Team Rogerson three-year-old Gelding. Definitely facing stiffer competition in this mammoth Group 1 thoroughbred race at Randwick Racecourse, but the sheer success this young gun has had is incredible.

Winner in his last two and six of his career eleven races gives Sharp ‘N’ Smart a career 91% place rate and 55% win rate! It will be interesting how he gets on in the 2023 Australian Derby, but one things for sure, he will be looking to add to his already staggering $2.76 million AUD in prize money. Watch out for this one come Saturday the 1st of April at Randwick Racecourse for the 2023 Australian Derby.

Pericles  - NEXT BEST
Maybe a bit short by my book, however Pericles gets the nod as my next best bet thanks in large part to the wonderful James Cummings doing great work on him. Over $500,000 AUD in career earnings in seven races thus far, with a win and a second in his last two, there is real promise with this one coming into the 2023 Australian Derby. Do not leave out.

Williamsburg - ROUGHIE PICK

My roughie pick for both the 2023 Randwick Guineas and the 2023 Rosehill Guineas, let’s see if three times is the charm for Williamsburg in the 2023 Australian Derby. Visit our race preview to the 2023 Randwick Guineas and 2023 Rosehill Guineas for more information on Williamsburg.

Coming into the 2023 Australian Derby, once again it looks far too long for my money, however I have been wrong twice in recent memory with Williamsburg. So, bet with caution but I will be on the fixed place market with PlayUp.

Race History of the AustralianDerby

To do justice to the incredible history of the Australian Derby coming into the 2023 iteration of the Australian Derby, we will look at some of the records set at Randwick Racecourse by thoroughbred horses competing in the prestigious Australian Derby, as well as some interesting moments across the 160+ year history of the Australian Derby.

In relation to the 2023 Australian Derby, Randwick Racecourse has had some spectacular moments including:

  • The fastest time for an Australian Derby champion at the current distance for the Australian Derby of 2400m. This was set by the legendary Octagonal in 1996 when he was in the middle of his impressive winning streak. The time of 2 minutes 28.41 seconds has not been topped in the almost 30 years since!
  • The largest winning margin seen in an Australian Derby race was almost 140 years ago itself when Trident won by a stupendous 10 lengths in the 1886 edition of the Australian Derby.
  • The winningest jockey in the Australian Derby race is a name that only the most avid racing fans will be familiar with. Thomas Hales has claimed victory in six different Australian Derby races including the 1875, 1880, 1882, 1884, 1886, and 1887 Australian Derbies.

A few of the more interesting moments in the history of the Australian Derby includes:

  • Similarly to the 2015 Doncaster Mile, heavy track conditions forced the schedulers to move the 2015 Australian Derby a week back to Easter Monday on the 6th of April 2015. This is one of two instances of scheduling changes over the history of the Australian Derby.
  • The second scheduling change was the move of the Australian Derby from Spring to Autumn. This move came during the 1978 season meaning there was no 1978 edition of the Australian Derby!
  • There have been two recorded dead heats in the history of the Australian Derby. This includes, first, the 1919 Australian Derby that saw Artilleryman and Richmond Main share the main prize after a dead heat. The other dead heat occurred sixteen years later in the 1935 Australian Derby where Allunga and Homer shared the spoils.
