Friday Racing Tips - Canberra Racecourse 07/04/23

Good Friday racing kicks on at Canberra and there are nine races on the card with the majority of them being over sprint distance with a couple mid distance races but all races are under 2000m and as such we are in for an exciting day of sprints. There is a total of $218,000 prize money on the card, the track is rated a good 4 and I have outlined my best spots on the card below.

Canberra R2 - THANK YOU TIM OLIVE HANDICAP (C1) (1200m)

Selections:
#3- Vancouver Queen (BEST BET)- $2.60
#1 - In De Sun Iwilcome - $8.50
#4 - Loud - $4.20
#6 - Anchorage - $10.00

BEST BET - #3 - Vancouver Queen (BEST BET)

Vancouver Queen is having her third start at the races and she’s been. She was thoroughly backed in the market into favourite on debut and duly saluted, scoring impressively over the 1000m by four lengths. Second up she faded at Kembla over the 1300m last week on Tuesday on a heavy track. She looks much better placed here third up and off the heavy going back onto firm ground and back 100m as well. Should be hard to beat.

THE DANGER - #4 - Loud
Loud  is another who is having her second run back after resuming from a five month break at Orange in a BM58 two weeks ago over the 1010m race where he finished off third, 1.1 lengths behind Daredevil who is a super progressive horse. When he was last second up he came second of ten and he does look like he has a bit of upside. Stable always has to be respected and is among the top chances.

VALUE BET  - #1 - In De Sun Iwilcome
The Dryden trained five-year-old holds a special place in my heart, being one of the first horses I ever punted on back in 2019. He’s having his second run back tomorrow after sitting behind the speed at this track at the beginning of last month where he steadily faded over the 1200m but that was on a bog track and I like the way he stalked the speed even though he couldn’t finish things off. Sentimental bet, so tread lightly but I do think he improves second up here.

Canberra R7 - TAB FEDERAL (BM70) (1200m)

Selections:
#1 - Transplant (NEXT BEST)- $7.00
#8 - Watch Me Rumble - $3.90
#3 - Brothers Of Antrim - $6.00
#6 - Puerto Rico - $6.00

BEST BET - #1 - Transplant (NEXT BEST)
Transplant has won two of four as favourite and has won and been runner-up in three runs this prep. He gets a very soft draw from barrier one and at his best rates above a fair few in this field. He most recently led them for the better part of the race at Hawkesbury in similar grade to this two weeks back before steadily being eased out of the race. The run before was similar, where he sat on the speed up top and was just edged out late. He gets every chance for his run style having drawn barrier one now.

THE DANGER - #8 - Watch Me Rumble
Competitive sprint we have here and the obvious threat is Watch Me Rumble who is a Clint Lindholm trained four-year-old that has been in great form of late. He resumed on Feb 6th at this distance after being sent back to the paddock a winner, and resumed a winner too, when scoring with something in hand fresh at Bathurst. He then most recently ran in the Coonamble Wra Champ in early march when just not producing his best but has a good third up record and can score here. Just think I will be on something with better value with how competitive this race is.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Brothers Of Antrim
Brothers of Antrim is one of the only last start winners in this field and his recent form reads pretty well for this. His last win came on the 1000m at Corowa in a BM66 in the second week of march where he tracked the speed and boxed along before letting down hard after the turn. The run prior he did the same thing when boxing on to finish fourth of eight in an Albury BM66. He looks to be quite a smart type and is fit and in form, can go on with it now.

Canberra R9 - HAPPY 40TH HUTCH (BM60) (1000m)

Selections:
#1 - Chief Conductor - $2.50
#2 - Beau Rock - $4.60
#4 - Frisson (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $13.00
#6 - Nomara - $9.00

BEST BET - #1 - Chief Conductor
Chief Conductor was only one length off Vinolass last time out when carrying a big weight and just missing by a head. He does draw wide this time in but he is far superior to the competition that he comes up against this time and looks a moral bet on paper. He’s been super in his two runs this year and I think he can break through now third up.

THE DANGER - #2 - Beau Rock
Beau Rock is chasing a hat trick coming into this after racing as favourite most recently at this track and trip and scoring by a big three lengths, albeit with no weight on her in a BM65. THe run prior she raced right up on the speed at this track and trip in a BM60 with 57kg when motoring away to score. She meets harder opposition again now but can be sure that she will be in the finish

VALUE BET - #4 - Frisson (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)

Frisson is having her second run back from the races after resuming for her first run in four months she placed fourth of eight at Goulburn in a BM58 over this distance on a very slow track when carrying a stack of weight. I did really like the way she found the line there and think from a softer draw, with less weight and fitness benefit she can go much closer.

Jockey Of The Day – Jeff Penza

Jeff Penza I would argue is the best regional jockey in NSW, I think of him as our Willy Pike. He might not have the greatest win percent strike rate but he gets on the board consistently with a 15% strike rate this season. I have outlined all his rides below:

R3 - #11 - Tokoyo - $7.50
R4 - #7 - Manila Thriller  - $9.50
R5 - #9 - Lockup The Kittens - $13.80
R6 - #14 - Matronymic - $4.20
R7 - #9 - Crucial Witness - $12.40
R8 - #6 - Stratum Pride - $6.00
R9 - #1 - Chief Conductor - $2.30

Multi Tips For Canberra

The Canberra racecourse exhibits a discernible preference for horses that perform well on the inner lanes and have prior familiarity with the track. Furthermore, I have prioritized horses that are deeper into their preps and also there are some who have had runs / wins at this track already this campaign and I have favoured them as such. If you're looking for an enjoyable betting option to follow on race day at Canberra, then consider following my multi.

Best Promotions for Canberra Racecourse

Promotions are traditionally the primary way for punters to create an edge over the bookies, as they can save your cash when your runner fails to win, in the instance of Unibet they often offer 2nd and 3rd money back in bonus bets for a selection of races on the midweek and Provincial racing days. Coupled with their generous odds I have to put them as the top bookie promotion wise at the moment for Australian racing.

If you are looking for the best promotions this week for Wednesday's racing I wouldn’t look past Unibet, often they offer odds boosts in addition to the money back promotions. Don’t forget to check your account as well for personal offers.

Promotions often change so make sure you sign up at unibet.com.au to see what promotions are applicable to you and you may even be surprised to find some promotions that weren’t mentioned here!
