Friday Racing Tips - Canterbury Park Racecourse 20/01/23

Racing at Canterbury Park on a Friday night, a familiar face to carry us over through the first month of the new year and the card has shaped up to be quite solid with a few good betting spots across the seven race card. Most races are at sprint distance but there is also the lone 1500m and 1900m features later on the card. The track is expected to be rated a good 4 and depending on how much rain they see today it could get downgraded a peg. There’s a total of $410,000 prize money on offer across the card and lets jump straight into it.

BEST BET - #7 - De An Andretti - (BEST BET)
I am giving De An Andretti another chance. I backed him on debut at Warwick when he shifted in to a reasonably short priced favourite when resuming from a long spell and looking ready off multiple trials. He disappointed there but not without showing he has, at least, some talent. He ran fast and hard, a bit too keenly at points and then eased off the leaders heels at the 600m and really let down. I think he will improve massively into this.

THE DANGER - #9 - Rocketeer Girl 
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott seem to have things going right with Rocketeer Girl who comes into this race third up off the back of a soft win here over this distance/going as a $4.00 chance in a decently strong field. She ran a great time there and showed intelligence in her run style and I think there isn’t really a reason she can’t replicate that win. The form around her and the win time all add confidence.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Beep Test

Beep Test is a horse I haven’t seen in awhile but that I know is honest. He resumes here after just over half a year away from the races and last raced third as favourite out at Randwick Racecourse over the 1150m on the soft going. He ran a good time there and is always around the mark, interested to see what he produces fresh and gets Jmac back on.

BEST BET - #1 - French Marine - (NEXT BEST)
Happy to side with French Marine here who looks to be primed to take this out. He is third up now and looks ready to peak third up off the back of a narrow second placing on a bog track as a $4.00 favourite in the market last run. That was good for his strength and fitness in running and before then won fresh at Newcastle. He has shown plenty of talent, will be better for the run last time out at this track and with some firmer ground under his feet I think he takes this out. 

THE DANGER - #6 - True Crime - $3.70
True Crime is one who is progressing through the grades, stepping up to this BM72 contest off the back of a really fast second place to a smart type at Wyong. That was first up and he ran a great time there and exhibited a nice racing style. I think with natural improvement, a much better map and Schiller on board they will make this a close run race.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Lancaster Bomber - $10.00
I think Lancaster Bomber should be a lot shorter than he is. I understand he hasn’t impressed much this campaign but he drops in grade here and is racing back from the city. He has a placing in two runs this campaign and that placing was behind some black type horses in impressive time. He again ran well last time out at Randwick and looks ready to peak here third up. Meets a much softer field and gets Schofield on, I will not be surprised to see him in the finish.

BEST BET - #8 - Latenighttoughguy
I think Latenighttoughguy is justifiable at his current quote of around $2.60 and that if you can still get that when reading this, it’s a good time to jump on. He returned to Australia on the 28/12 last year and was absolutely flying on return at Gosford. He settled in an awkward spot and had a tough run but still arrived at the line in the last 600m, having the race best last 600m as well. He gets Jmac aboard and I think he could go on with it here and then some.

THE DANGER - #5 - Distillate  
Distillate is interesting as the ground is a bit of a query but the talent is definitely there. He resumes from a long 26 week spell here and has had just the one soft public trial win at Canberra to ready him for this. Last prep, he picked up a second placing and then two consecutive wins on the heavy going at Wagga and then here before going to Rosehill and being outclassed. I think he has talent and his first up record is outstanding with 2 wins in 4 attempts, interested to see what happens on race day. 

VALUE BET - #3 - Smuggler's Bay 
I love Smuggler’s Bay. He is one of the most honest horses around and has been for a couple of years. He raced over sprint distance at Canberra last time out after a five week spell and was too strong for them there, running a nice time in the process. Before then he showed some good heart when knuckling down on the line for a tough win at Queanbeyan. He’s always around the mark and top chance to go over again a winner and make it a hat trick.
