Friday Racing Tips - Canterbury Racecourse 17/02/23

Friday racing at Canterbury continues and there have been some exciting races at the track already this year, featuring some super progressive horses that are gearing up for a big autumn racing carnival. This meeting features eight races with a total of $485,000 of prize available across the card. The highlight of the day should be the KIA EVENING STAR, a BM78 grade race over the 1550m. The rail is out +3m and the track is expected to be a soft 6.

BEST BET - #3 - Vomo Island (NEXT BEST)  
The Snowden stable has been getting things right with the Juveniles and they again look the way to go in the opening race with Vomo Island. Vomo Island has had just the two 1000m trials to ready himself for this. In the last he sat near the speed and then showed what looks to be a genuine turn of foot late to draw clear and win. He maps well and I think in a questionable race he is the top chance.

THE DANGER - #6 - French Endeavour
French Endeavour is one of the few with runs on the board and the run was quite impressive two weeks ago at Kensington after being held up he worked hard and strongly late to come second to Bases Loaded. He will improve now off the back of that and Rachel King retains the ride.

VALUE BET  - #2- Tannhauser
Tannhauser is Waller trained Juvenile who must be respected racing under Avdulla. The stable has lead her into this with just the two trials at Rosehill and I liked what she did a lot in the most recent one. She sat comfortably on the speed there before motoring hard to the line late and it seems as if they are trying to establish a running style with him. That trial was behind the smart Cylinder and the form around Cylinder already reads well. He’s in with a chance here.

BEST BET - #1 - Strait Acer- (NEXT BEST)
Strait Acer has something on these if he is ready to go. He has been kept cold since New Years Eve when he raced at Randwick and had a lot of excuses there but still ran a good time. Before then he was going excellently in better races than this. The fact that they are racing him fresh at 1550m means they should have him right fitness wise for this and with even luck I think he wins. Confident he goes close at least.

THE DANGER - #2 - Tavi Time 
All you can do is win and that is exactly what Tavi Time has done in his last two outings. He changed trainers a half year ago to the flying Lees stable and resumed at Taree at the beginning of the year when bursting away inside the last 100m to smash them and then remained at the track and stepped up to the 1400m where he looked to have relished that and stormed over them again. Third up and out to 1550m looks good and whilst he meets tougher competition now he looks very up to the task.

THE DANGER  - #9 - Episodic (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Episodic is another Waller trained filly that has placed third in both her runs to date. On debut she did plenty for a first start when third to Ithadtobezou and then went on to race at Randwick when she was just a bit one paced despite being close in the run and having enough to run third. That was behind some very progressive horses and the form should hold here as well as she has heaps of upside on the other two.

BEST BET - #3 - For Valour (BEST BET)
I think that For Valour will jump on the bunny, sit on the fence and be too much for this lot to run down. He wanted to do just that at Rosehill three weeks ago but couldn’t lead there, was caught out wide and still gave a strong kick at the end but the run told and he was narrowly beaten by Think About It who has won again since. He will find the lead easily here and I think he has something on these.

THE DANGER - #4 - Silent Agenda
Silent Agenda is screaming for a win. The Pride trained gelding comes into this on a quick backup after racing at Warwick Farm last Wednesday and he was given every chance but couldn’t get one over the impressive Mission Value who took that out. He now gets Nash on and if they run it too hard up top he will be there to hurt them late. Top Threat to For Valour.

VALUE BET - #7 - Decadent Tale
Decadent Tale is being somewhat overlooked in this I think, she resumed at the races two weeks ago at Newcastle when sitting far back in the run before shifting out wide and powering home to finish a close third to Mihocek over the 1400m and that looks good enough for this. She now maps to do no work at all and gets into this light, I would be surprised if she did nothing on race day.

Multi betting is great for the smaller tracks such as Canterbury as I am very confident in the bets that I have outlined, a lot of these bets are on runners from bigger stables or that are proven on this track and further they are often competing with smaller fields and horses that may be overall less competitive. As such, I have mixed the win and place betting together with my best bets for my multi at Canterbury racecourse on Friday.
