Friday Racing Tips - Geelong Racecourse 11/08/23

Racing returns to Geelong this Friday for what looks like a very solid nine race meeting that sees the first five races in maiden grade where some of the top Victorian stables have set forth runners who look to be in for solid preps and who have been placed with intent to get the maiden tag out the way and onto bigger things. There are also some nice spots in the latter races which are contested in mixed benchmark grade and I think that we can pick up some nice bets at odds. I am keen to get stuck into things so follow me below as I outline my best bets of the day at Geelong racecourse!

BEST BET - #9 - Miss Italiana
Miss Italiana should be at her peak here fourth up from Andrew Noblet and looks well placed to shed the maiden tag fourth up off the back of a nice run here. She ran a few weeks back at this track and trip where she got a ways out of her ground and wasn’t a winning chance from back there but the way she found the line from deep and wide was very impressive when she powered home into fourth and clocked some good splits in the process. The query is how far back in the run she gets again but I imagine she will be ridden with more intent now and if that is the case and she is around the mark on the turn she will be in the finish.

THE DANGER - #2 - Lolly Money 
Lolly Money should look strong here if she can bring her form from her last start on the synthetic onto turf now. Her last few runs have been on the synthetic where she hasn’t been far away at all but the way she sat along the speed and had a big kick in the straight last time out over this distance was particularly impressive and I think that this field isn’t overly strong and with the added fitness of that last run she can take this out. She doesn’t have as much upside as some in this field but doesn’t need to find much more than she’s been producing to be in it.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Statesmanship (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Statesmanship’s splits rate amongst the best in this field and I think that he has struck another very winnable race here. He was three weeks between runs when stepping out over this track / trip three weeks ago where he crossed well from the wide gate to lead and looked the winner when kicking two lengths clear at the 200m and kept finding the line well but bumped into a smart horse right on the line who was powering home then. He’s clearly at his best off that effort and doesn’t have to improve much to be winning this.

BEST BET - #1 - Calvi (NEXT BEST)
This looks a solid contest but I think there are two standouts amongst them and Calvi looks like if he can find his best here he will be hard to beat. He was four weeks between runs when stepping out over the 2200m at Bairnsdale two back where I’m not sure he beat much but the way he did it was very impressive before racing last time out at Bendigo over the 2400m where he did things tough out wide and wasn’t able to finish strongly but that will hold him in very good steed now staying at this distance, hard fit and back to the course he loves racing at.

THE DANGER - #3 - Made Of Gold
Provincial staying races and Maher and Eustace are always a lethal combination and I think Made of Gold is no exception. He had been putting together a bunch of sharp placings, often only bumping into one better before racing two back over this distance at Bendigo where he throttled a weak field by five lengths before pulling up lame at the same distance last time out so obviously has to be forgiven for that. If he isn’t scratched come race day that means he has recovered and will be sure to put in a bold showing again.

VALUE BET  - #5 - Pearlman
Pearlman should be ready for this trip now for the Macdonald stable third up and can speck at a big price here. He resumed at this course over the 1720m about two months ago now where he was very impressive for a first up effort, powering home in a big field from deep in the run to finish second before stepping out to the 2050m at Murtoa where he just didn’t look fully up to the distance when fading late. He will be hard fit now third up and ready for the 2400m and I think with an economical run in transit he can have a big enough kick to win this in the straight.

BEST BET - #9 - Aperol Blitz (BEST BET)
I think that Aperol Blitz is probably a bit short for a horse resuming off of a twenty two week spell but on class alone he has lengths on these and doesn’t take much to get going having won his only first up run in his career debut over the 1100m when kicking off his first campaign. He makes a habit of burying himself back in the run but under Luke Currie’s steering I trust him to find a spot for the horse in the straight and from there if he is right to go he should find plenty and be storming over the field late. Taking a bit of a punt here but keen on his chances.

THE DANGER - #7 - Russian Summer 
I am not sure how much steam Russian Summer has left in the tank but he has been going too well to ignore and can win again before being sent back to the paddock. He’s had five runs this time in, having finished runner up or third in four of those and winning well on the Synthetic over this distance in one of them. His last effort was a very close third placing behind The Guava who is a clear Saturday animal and now takes a big step back in competition for this and gets a big jockey upgrade to Jamie Mott who will be sure to afford him every chance.

VALUE BET - #2 - Feudal Empire
Feudal Empire is a bomb fresh horse for the Keane stable who resumes here off of a long thirty six week spell but the whispers say he should be in pretty good order here. He’s got a fresh win from two first up runs and one of those came when kicking off last prep at Cranbourne at this distance so I think there is clear intent from the stable as well as he loves this course, with only the one run here but he looked to really relish being here when placing a super close second in a tough run. With any luck he will be fighting out the finish.
