Friday Racing Tips - Geelong Racecourse 15/09/23

Racing returns to Geelong this Friday for what looks like a very solid eight race meeting that sees the first four races in maiden grade where some of the top Victorian stables have set forth runners who look to be in for solid preps and who have been placed with intent to get the maiden tag out the way and onto bigger things. The first four races at the course see a bunch of competitive maiden fields before the remaining four races wil be contested over mixed Benchmark grades. I am keen to get stuck into things so follow me below as I outline my best bets of the day at Geelong racecourse!

BEST BET - #12 - Mickio (NEXT BEST)
Tricky distance range, a bunch of these are lightly raced but I do think that the Hayes’ boys trained Mickio stands out as one of the better chances. He’s coming off the back of a smart debut at Donald over 100m less than this where he set 9th, two wide the trip before swinging wider and coming on strongly to hit the line hard in the final 200m and clear all but the winner. Sure to improve sharply off the back of that.

THE DANGER - #4 - Lodbrok
Maher and Eustace are always dangerous with their imported stayers and whilst this horse has been bred for longer I think that she likely will sharply improve into this race. She made her career debut three weeks ago when stepping out at Sandown on the Lakeside track and running well despite being held up at a crucial stage when stewards suggested longer would suit her. She gets an extra 200m now, softer / smaller field and she should run well.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Jefferson
Jefferson has been getting very close to a win for the Bourke stable and presents with another honest chance here. He came off of a short five week let up two back when at this track over the 1400m where he was very strong through the line and only got going late. He then stepped out over the 1624m at Donald last time out where he produced a similar effort to grab second place. Hard fit, in form and with some extra ground all looks good.

BEST BET - #1 - Indented Head 
I think that Indented Head only really generally gets going in his preps around now and this looks a good spot for him to pick up his first win in some time. He’s had three runs back from a 39 week spell for Phillip Stokes and has come close in two of them, with game placings first up and last time out when stepping out to the mile. He drops back 200m for this but he is a free running horse, has two wins at the trip and now gets a key claim from Keane to offset top weight.

THE DANGER - #2 - Pontificate
I think that Pontificate deserves another look here for the McEvoy’s. He’s coming off the back of resuming from a long spell where he clearly needed the run after racing wide without cover all run he just plugged along in the straight and really wasn’t given the best of steers by Damien Lane. He hasn’t won second up in the past but I do think he will but a lot sharper / fitter after such a tough first outing and he’s a winner over this distance. This isn’t an overly strong field and he looks to have more upside than most.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Alaskan Storm (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Alaskan Storm looks like a genuine winning chance here and is way over the odds for me. He comes into this second up off of a twenty two week spell where he went back to the paddock at the end of last preparation after finally shedding the maiden tag, having had put together a bunch of sharp consecutive placings before scoring. He resumed on the Synthetic where he looked like he needed the run but has a very strong second up record, draws a good gate and whilst he doesn’t win often I think that this prep could really be his coming of age prep. Top chance at odds.

BEST BET - #4 - Deal Obtained (BEST BET) 
There are a few key chances in this field but I think it is hard to go past Damien O’Briens Deal Obtained who looks astutely placed in this field. He’s only had the four career starts when getting the maiden win out of the way early and coming off of a twenty three week spell last time out at this track / trip where he looks to have returned in very good steed after racing two wide and on the pace all trip he still found plenty to chase hard to the line and only find one better. Plenty of upside second up, Mcneil aboard, keen.

THE DANGER - #5 - Ludovisi
Ludovisi looks to have come back well for the Corstens’ and shapes up well here. He may want one more but given how he has come back to racing I am inclined to say he is rearing to go. He resumed here over the 1347m a couple weeks back when really clicking up on the turn to let down well and make his way home into second place in a very impressive run where he clocked some decent splits. He should improve a lot only second up now and I think it will hold him well for this.

VALUE BET - #11 - Vivacious Award 
Vivacious Award has been working along towards a win nicely for the Preusker stable and meets a beatable field here. He has had a few runs back from a spell this time in but has really clicked up in his last couple. Both his last two runs have been super close runner up placings with last time out he ran over the 1624m at Donald where he was forced wide in the run and to shift wider on the turn but he let down powerfully from there out wide when beating all but the winner in a good effort. He looks well placed at this track / trip combination now and I think he is overs in this field.
