Friday Racing Tips - Geelong Racecourse 25/08/23

Racing returns to Geelong this Friday for what looks like a very solid eight race meeting that sees the first four races in maiden grade where some of the top Victorian stables have set forth runners who look to be in for solid preps and who have been placed with intent to get the maiden tag out the way and onto bigger things. There are also some nice spots in the latter races which are all to be contested in BM64 grade and I think that we can pick up some nice bets at odds. I am keen to get stuck into things so follow me below as I outline my best bets of the day at Geelong racecourse!

#6 - Moonflower (BEST BET) - $3.00
#2 - Lucky Stock  - $4.50
#3 - Undercover Agent  - $7.50
#10 - Miss Aria  - $5.00

BEST BET - #6 - Moonflower (BEST BET) 
This lot is lightly raced but Moonflower still rates a ways in front of this field and this James Cummings product has to be respected. He’s been placed in four from five of his career starts and looks to have come back in solid order after beating all but one and chasing hard the entire straight when resuming here over the 1200m off of a long 20 week spell. He will surely improve quite sharply only second up for this assignment and think Damien Oliver will give him every chance.

THE DANGER - #2 - Lucky Stock
Lucky Stock rates highly here amongst these lightly raced horses and I think he has a very good shot of shedding the maiden tag at just his third start for Symon Wilde. His debut run for the stable saw him only really get going in the last 200m but he found the line very nicely behind a smart horse who has since won again. Last time out he showed big improvement when he stepped out here and had no favours but found a spot way out wide and just kept on coming strongly to finish third. Looks well placed here.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Undercover Agent 
I am a big fan of the Begg stable and the work they have been doing this season has been truely masterful. I think that Undercover agent is a representative of the stable who looks to have been placed here with intent. He hasn’t been seen at the races for some time since finishing just outside the placegetters at Mornington late last year but the way he moved along in a recent 1000m Cranbourne trial was too good to ignore and there have already  been two winners come from that trial which he beat all but the winner, who was ridden with more intent. Go close.

BEST BET - #12e. Russian Summer 
Tempted to say the emergency runner Russian Summer towels this lot at a nice price. He’s been up for a little while but seems to be holding form really well and after a few sharp runs that included a win he raced at Morphettville in Saturday company where he had to overcome doing it three and four wide the trip to place third behind The Guava in a very bold effort. That is clearly the best form in this field and last time out when he stepped onto this course he looked ready to power over them in the straight but was badly held up and has to be given another look here. Keen on his chances, I think the market is underestimating him

THE DANGER - #4 - Chinchero 
Not really sure if Chinchero will be ready to go come jump but he is one I will be watching in the yard, for any whispers etc and go from there. He comes into this off the back of a 26 week spell and having his first start for the Feek’s. Last campaign he kicked off with three wins before a let up where he never really hit form again after then but overall the splits / times he ran read very well for this. He’s a first up winner, gets Craig Newitt aboard and should be afforded at least a chance here.

VALUE BET  - #10 - Ripple Effect (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
Very interesting horse for Mick Williams in Ripple Effect who has had just the two career starts and resumes here off of a 26 week spell. The first start came in New Zealand where he began awkwardly and took another knock early but came on so strongly late over the 1000m he was able to beat all but the winner there. He was sent away for some time after then before resuming in a 1400m Warrnambool race where he had the gun run but was truly outstanding first up, clocked some good times and displayed what looks like a dynamic run style to overcome traffic. The query is how he lines up here / how he returns from the long lay off but you’re getting a worthwhile price right now.

BEST BET - #9 - Scuderia (NEXT BEST) 
Scuderia does deserve another look here for Pat Carberry and I am keen to give him that chance. He’s a well bred horse who has had just the four career starts for a win and two game placings but resumed off a 27 week spell last time out when at this course and chasing hard until he peaked late to finish midfield where he did look to need the run but also looked very solid there. His win came second up last time and with Alllen aboard I imagine they are shooting for gold here.

THE DANGER - #8 - Flying Temptress 
Not sure if this is a bait spot or if there is a bit of value on Flying Temptress who hasn’t been seen at the races for a long time, 38 weeks to be exact. However, his two career starts have been very very good and in solid company as well. Both of his starts have come over the 1200m at The Valley for an awesome debut second placing before winning his next outing and being sent away. He now comes back to racing off the back of a nice Cranbourne trial and will undoubtedly be strong here.

VALUE BET - #6 - Liberty Steps
You always have to give respect to the Hayes boys, especially when sending forth runners to some of these provincial Victorian meetings and Liberty Steps looks like a solid shot here at odds. He raced over this distance range in Saturday company at Sandown two back where he just raced a bit too greenly, with his head in the air and rearing a bit but still finished just outside the placegetters despite that. His splits read well and whilst this isn’t an overly strong race he just needs to polish up his racing manners to be a really good horse.

The Geelong track displays a noticeable bias towards horses that can run well on the inside, as well as those with previous experience at this venue.
