Friday Racing Tips - Moonee Valley Racecourse 24/02/23

Metro racing kicks on at Moonee Valley this Friday to lead us into what is going to be a big weekend of racing in Victoria and there is a stacked eight race card with half a million dollars of prize money available across all races and I think there will be some horses looking to move onto bigger and better things throughout the upcoming Victorian Autumn Carnival and in other States. Regardless, it should make for an exciting evening of racing.

BEST BET - #2 - Alphaville (BEST BET)
Amongst the top three selections I think that Alphaville has the most upside and also has been running very well this campaign with a win and two super close second placings in his last three runs. The most recent of which was a second placing at this track and similar trip when he drove to the lead from off the pace and just missed in a bob of the heads. He only has to replicate that to take this out and maps to sit much closer in the run this time.

THE DANGER - #3 - Defining
Defining looks well placed down in distance and in grade in this field and Kah hops aboard which is always positive. He races best with the sting out the ground having won one of three on the soft going and gets that here and whilst he was a touch disappointing last time out at Sandown he pulled up with some problems there and looks to hit back hard now.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Piaggio 
Piaggio has been awesome this campaign so far with two close placings at Geelong and Pakenham respectively before taking a short break from the races and coming back strongly at Pakenham to pick up a win last time out over this distance. That was a gritty, strong win and a good ride by Alana Kelly who sticks for this and I think they are in with a shot again.

BEST BET - #1 - Foxicon (NEXT BEST)
Foxicon won by two lengths last time out against a similar field and I don’t see why she cant do the same again in this field? She rises in weights a bit but really thrashed them last time and I think that added weight won’t do too much to slow her down and from barrier two she will get every chance with Kah on board.

THE DANGER - #2 - Petulant
Petulant is a Hawkes trained runner who comes into this third up and should be ready to fire now after just looking like she needed those last two outings. Most recently she went around as favourite at Warwick Farm when leading them and dropping off towards the end of the race. However she should take a large fitness benefit from that and if last prep was anything to go by the talent is there and she can hit back hard now.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Fairy Magic
Fair Magic comes across from Hobart where she has been exceptional with 2 placings and a win in four runs. Last time out she just missed when heavily back and placing second when she just couldn’t weave into clear running until it was just too late. She does look a talented type who deserves a shot now and I think she settles in a handy spot in the run.

BEST BET - #2 - The Last Napoleon (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
The Last Napoleon comes into this as a genuine winning chance third fourth up and in his second run back from a let up. Last time out at this track over the 1200m he chased hard all run but was never really able to get into the clear and let down there. However, prior to that he scored smartly at Geelong over this distance and now he maps to get a cozy run behind a genuine speed and hammer them late. I think he’s overs.

THE DANGER - #1 - Sparring 
Sparring is probably going to win this. He rates a fair bit on top of this field and he loves this track. In this prep he picked up a win here when looking as though he still would have appreciate longer and then having a short break, going to Randwick where he had excuses after racing wide and being unsteady through the run and then came back to this track over the 955m to score again when Kah gave him the dream run, driving along the inside to score. He may have taken on too much weight now and doesn’t get the easiest gate but he loves this track, is in form and has a bit on this lot.

VALUE BET - #3 - Super Thief
Super Thief is screaming for a win after two consecutive super close second placings at Moe and then at this track last time out over the 888m behind the smart and progressive Mutinous. He knocked off Tax Free Prophet today and really wasn’t far off Mutinous there. I think he’s a genuine sprinter and if he doesn’t tire late he will give these all something to catch out front.

There is a strong track Bias at the Valley in the distance ranges that I have tipped races in, skewed towards those that are close to the rail and those that have experience at this track. I also decided to follow horses based off which jockey is aboard seeing as some are track specialists. There is also a major advantage to horses who are trained at this track.
