Friday Racing Tips - Newcastle Racecourse 03/03/23

It’s Newcastle stakes day already and wow are we into the swing of things now for NSW’s Autumn racing carnival. The day features eight races with almost all of them over sprint / mid distance and there is the lone staying race to kick off the card. The card is highlighted by the Group three HORSEPOWER NEWCASTLE STAKES, set to be run over 1400m. There is almost half a million dollars worth of prize and the rail is in true position, it should all make for an

BEST BET - #9 - Frankie’s Me Dad
I’m tipping in the staying race and sticking with Frankie’s Me Dad, the Maher and Esutace trained filly comes into this off the back of a really solid win over the 21000m at the Beaumont track (within this track) where she really did stay and was by far the strongest in the race, toughing it out to hold them off. I think that the booking of Brenton Avdulla is super positive as well and he is the perfect jockey for her run style.

THE DANGER - #2 - Don Quixote 
Dun Quixote has been costly for me to follow in his last two runs but he is as honest as they come and now comes into this on a seven day back up after racing under the lights last friday night at Canterbury when he jumped last in the field and whilst he was never a threat at winning but he worked to the line really solidly to end up third to the fitter Infinitive. The rise to 2300m looks natural and the form around him is the strongest in this field.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Jimmy Manolo (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Jimmy Manolo is a gelding that took his time to break maiden but he did so last start at Tuncurry in a pretty similar race to this but in much less strong company where he fully defied the run of the meeting to dominate them in a super strong win. He’s had his confidence boosted by that and will only improve off the back of it, I think that if he measures up here he has a good chance of winning.

BEST BET - #8 - Higher hand- (NEXT BEST)
Higher Hand finds the perfect set up at Newcastle tomorrow to break maiden based off his last run. He is a free running horse that attempted to lead a couple weeks back at Wrong and whilst he gave a solid kick he was never really able to finish it off as the run told late when he ended up third to the smart and fitter Owari. The track tomorrow is meant to be dry, the rail is in true position and he draws barrier one. All this makes me think is that he will put a couple lengths too many on the field for them to run him down.

THE DANGER - #10 - Piccadilly Lass
Piccadilly Lass ran in the same race as Higher Hand and she made great late ground to beat Higher Hand and end up second to Owari there. She was making her debut over the mile then and has started to really get moving in her prep now fourth up coming into this. I think she settles closer in the run here as well and she can take this out

VALUE BET  - #9 - Our Frankie 
Our Frankie is a four year old local who comes into this third up off the back of two solid runs at this track without being in the finish. His last run was here over this distance where he was fourth to the talented Apache Jewel who looks to be onto bigger things in the future. I think that with Reith retaining the ride off the back of that run and with the way they map he could easily be fighting out the finish in this.

BEST BET - #7 - Iron Man (NEXT BEST)
Iron Man has looked to be absolutely trucking in his trials leading up to this and whilst he hasn’t raced since his debut in September that race he was in was far tougher than this and he ran excellently, motoring home from well back in the field to end up second to the very established Stylised. He maps perfectly and I can’t see these running him down.

THE DANGER - #9 - Pereille
I was on Pereille last start two weeks back on the Bog Warwick farm track and also the run prior on the firmer ground at Warwick and at this point, whilst I know she is honest, she has just become too costly to back. Both of those runs he has been odds on favourite and whilst he may not have had the perfect run in those he has had his chance in both to motor home and hasn’t produced that. He’s still a Cummings trained horse with talent and has to be respected again in this field.

VALUE BET - #5 - Grand Crusader
Grand Crusader looks very suited getting out to a bigger track now second up from a spell. He was great in resumption over the 1100m at Wyong early last week and whilst he didn’t appreciate the narrow track and just battled away to end up third there to Restrictions. His gate/draw might not permit him to take this out but he has the talent/progression to run a great race.

Brenton Avdulla has been absolutely flying this year already and has really levelled up, with some beautiful rides in stakes racing and also just at metro grade meetings. He gets a lovely and lengthy booking of rides for Friday’s racing at Newcastle and I expect him to pick up at least a win or two.

It’s a big day at Newcastle and there are some real stand out types in some of the earlier races that have a really good shot of taking them out or at least running into the placings. I am tipping against a few short priced favourites and as such I have combined my best runners together in a place multi.
