Friday Racing Tips - Newcastle Racecourse 15/09/23

Eight races at Newcastle tomorrow for Newcastle cup day and we see a strong card with three listed races on the card and the feature of the day being the Sharp Office Newcastle Gold Cup in race seven, a 2300m Open race contested for a share of $300k prize money. It should make for a very competitive and exciting edition of Newcastle Cup Day and I am keen to get stuck into things so follow me below as I outline my best betting spots for the card below!

BEST BET - #3 - Pushy (BEST BET)
I reckon that Pushy likely remains undefeated here for Mick Freedman. He’s a smart three year old who has had two runs to kick his career off and has dominated in both. His most recent run came just shy of a month ago at this track over the 1400m where he let them get a ways in front before belting them to the line. He’s had a nice trial between that run to lead him into this and looks right to go again. I’m happy to be on at the price.

THE DANGER - #7 - Orzala
I think the key threat to Pushy is the John O’Shea trained Orzala. She is on the quick back up here after stepping out last Wednesday at Randwick when she was forced to do heaps of work out wide throughout the run and faded late when the bias was against her. She needs to settle a bit closer in the run than that effort to be competitive here as Newcastle won’t afford too many chances from out wide and deep.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Twigman
Not sure that Twigman wins this first up but he has been trialling well enough to be competitive here. He’s been away from racing since the beginning of April when he had recorded a nice 2000m win before being thrown into the Australian Derby and whilst he wasn’t disgraced that day, he didn’t like the Heavy tracks we had been seeing in Sydney during that month. He’s got the class in this field, just might want a couple runs back from the spell.

BEST BET - #1 - Wollombi (NEXT BEST)
Wollombi looks like one of the better bets on the program here for the Snowdens. She resumed at Rosehill when finishing just outside the placegetters before running in the Mona Lisa at Wyong last time out where she really only got warm late in the piece after not the best of rides to power home into third behind Mirra View. She is third up now and approaching her peak, with more room to move on the bigger track, she looks to have these covered.

THE DANGER - #6 - Mirra View
It’s hard to knock Wollombi’s stablemate Mirra View who got the upper hand last time the two faced each other in the aforementioned Mona Lisa from Wyong a couple weeks ago. She was racing tough, at a genuine tempo in that race when Schofield asked for more effort in the straight and she had it for them to let down with purpose and win well. She maps well again here to get a little trail in and has three wins in five runs at this trip so no doubt goes well at the 1400m.

VALUE BET  - #10 - Diamond Dealer
I am a big fan of Bjorn Baker’s Diamond Dealer, who doesn’t win out of turn but has already made ⅓ of her 18 career starts winning ones and looks to be going in good order this campaign. She ran a strong third place two runs ago behind Olentia at Rosehill before stepping out at that track again three weeks ago and flying over them in the last 100m or so with no weight on her to power away and win. She gets in well weighted again, Maloney aboard, sure to run well.

BEST BET - #2 - Cleveland
Cleveland is the best horse in this field on paper and that might hold him in good enough steed to win this. He came off an 18 week spell when having his first run for Kris Lees since coming over from Joseph O’Brien in the Premiers Cup where he was bumped at the start but recovered and ran well behind Hosier in a big field when fourth. He’s proven at these distances, is a second up winner and shapes up well in this field.

THE DANGER - #5 - Bois D'argent 
Bois D’argent looks like one of the better runners that Annabel Neasham sends forth for this race and there does look to be plenty of intent from the stable to win this race. He raced in the messy Wyong Cup that saw most runners strike interference until the last 500m so not the best form reference. However, prior to then he produced a bold effort in the Premier’s Cup when third to Hosier in a flying down the track effort. That holds him well for this, hard fit, consistent and will be strong under Schofield

VALUE BET - #11 - Spirit Ridge (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Spirit Ridge is another smart animal for Annabel Neasham who I think could definitely take this out. He resumed in the Wyong Cup after nearly claiming the Grafton Cup and having a spell in between but that Wyong Cup from recently he looked the winner a long way from out front but just couldn’t maintain that leading pace late in the piece when Benaud got the better of him. He will be a lot sharper second up now, is a proven winner second up and gets conditions to suit now.
