Friday Racing Tips - Pakenham Racecourse 15/03/24

Racing returns to the Pakenham for a big Friday meeting and we have eight races on the card for a share of $340k prize money in total. There looks to be some progressive VIC and outer state stable runners and I am keen to see how they go so follow me below as I outline my best betting spots of the day at Pakenham.

BEST BET - #4 - Grinzinger Angel
Grinzinger Angel looks very well placed to get a win first up here for Danny O’Brien. He’s had just the five career starts and has already made two of them winning starts with one placing as well and generally goes very well fresh. He has a win and placing in two first up runs, draws a good gate and gets a top jockey booked. I think he will prove tough to beat here.

THE DANGER - #6 - Takashima
All you can do is win and that is what Takashima has done in his lone career start for the Hayes boys. He debuted at Swan Hill back in September last year as an odds on favourite where he set second and two wide in the run before letting down at the 200m powerfully and putting them away with ease. No public trials for the return but the stable likes to do this sort of thing and I expect him to still be prominent here.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Manhattan Thunder (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
It is hard to ignore Manhattan Thunder after the way he has been improving between runs and I think he now shapes up very well here. He was four weeks between runs when last stepping out at Sale and not getting much luck in the run until late in the piece where he powered away to peak in the last 50m and finish just behind the placegetters there. Shapes up well off the back of that run and should be strong here.

BEST BET - #8 - Illative (BEST BET)
Happy to make Illative my best bet of the day here for the Price and Kent stable. He has come back well from a 30 week spell and looked particularly good when stepping out at Flemington two weeks ago when forced off the pace and very wide in the run but still finding plenty to get going hard in the straight and fly home to just miss the win. He looks like an extremely sharp maiden and should be shedding the tag here.

THE DANGER - #3 - Attain 
II think that Attain would be a lot closer in the market if not for the way he ran last start in a total forgive run. He stepped out here a couple weeks back when being trapped along the rails through the run and never being fully tested when finishing at the rear of the field, unable to build momentum in the run. However, the start prior here he came widest on the turn and clocked some great splits when absolutely blitzing to the line to dive and miss out by a bob of the heads. Can hit back hard here now and is the main danger for me.

VALUE BET  - #11 - Stylish
Stylish has only had a couple career starts for the Moroney camp but he does look to be improving with each and I think is one for the exotics here. He last stepped out at Bendigo when second up a couple weeks back in a small field and despite pulling up Lame he chased very hard the entire straight to finish second. That was over the 1300m and he appeared to be looking for longer so the trip is a query but the stable knows what they are doing.

BEST BET - #1 - Dunkel (NEXT BEST)
Pakenham Cup Day and I think that the favourite is going to take this out. Dunkel steps out here for Patrick Payne looking to make it nine career wins at his twelfth career start and steps out off the back of a resuming run from an 8 week break where he blitzed a field at Caulfield when taking over at the 250m and being far too strong for them through the line. He’s won his only start at this trip and I think that last assignment was a rev up for this so go well here.

THE DANGER - #3 - Ashrun
Ashrun looks to have returned very well to racing for Ciaron Maher and I think will only be running an improved race here. he’s got a good second up record with a win and runner up placing in four runs and last stepped out at Caulfield behind Dunkel when coming from very deep in the field to charge home late and finished just behind the placegetters. He clocked some of the best late splits of the meeting then and should only be running an improved race.

VALUE BET - #6 - Glentaneous
Glentaneous is a smart horse for Anthony and Sam Freedman who has a very good strike rate and saw out a very impressive campaign that ended at the beginning of this year and returned to racing off of a 7 week break and where he chased hard out wide despite not being a winning chance. He shapes up well off the back of that run, should be improving second up and just needs to run out the trip but I think he’s up to the task.
