Cascadian  - BEST BET

If Mo’unga was competing in the 2023 Australian Cup, my best bet would likely look very different. However, given that the New Zealand based champion is out of this Australian Cup race, I will have to give my best bet tip to the easy best horse in this race at Flemington Racecourse… Cascadian.

Jockeyed by Ben Melham and trained by the legendary James Cummings, this British 8 year old has raced in 46 career races, claiming victory in 10 of those. Coming into the 2023 Australian Cup, Cascadian is seeking to repeat Duais’ magical run from the 2022 Australian Cup. At very short odds, and with great connections and recent results, it might prove all too hard to get passed this elite thoroughbred.

Steinem - NEXT BEST

Now, I do not know a whole lot about this UK based thoroughbred, however from what I have read in my research in the lead up to this year’s Australian Cup, he will be a force to be reckoned with. Sticking with the most elite that the British have to offer, Steinem is going to be jockeyed by Coffey and is trained by Maher & Eustace, a lethal combination.

A career 4 wins for Steinem from 17 total races is nothing to snuff your nose at, however this certainly is not eye-popping. However, I believe that the right connections and the right distance will work in Steinem’s favour at Flemington Racecourse on the 25th of March 2023 for the Australian Cup.

Smokin’ Romans - ROUGHIE PICK

This Kiwi thoroughbred is way too long on my book, and I will be placing fixed place bets on Smokin’ Romans for the 2023 Australian Cup. To see the type of bets I will be placing, and the most popular, for the 2023 Australian Cup, read the subsequent sections below titled ‘Where to Bet on the 2023 Australian Cup’ and ‘How to Bet on the 2023 Australian Cup’.

9 wins from a possible 27 races gives Smokin’ Romans a nice 1/3 strike rate. However, where I believe the six-year-old thoroughbred excels is in these longer distance races where jockeys such as Mertens can work their magic. The preparations of Maher and Eustace will put Smokin’ Romans in good stead heading into the 2023 Australian Cup at Flemington Racecourse.

Race History of the Australian Cup

For this preview of the 2023 Australian Cup, instead of going through the history of the race in terms of how it has changed and adapted to be at the forefront of Victorian Group 1 races on the Australian thoroughbred racing calendar, we will provide some fun facts about the Australian Cup,
Some fun facts about Australian Cup races that have happened in the past:

  • In 2007, the Australian Cup was run at Caulfield Racecourse due to the home of the Australian Cup, Flemington Racecourse, undergoing major renovations to match the grand upgrades that had taken place on a couple of the New South Wales prestigious tracks. These include Randwick Racecourse and Rosehill Racecourse.

  • We have experienced two first-race dead heats in the Australian Cup’s history (I will explain later what a first-race dead heat in the Australian cup means). These occurred in the following iterations of Flemington Racecourse’s famous race, the Australian Cup:

  1. First occurring in the 1912 edition of the Australian Cup, a dead heat between stalwart runners Saxonite and Prizefighter saw the first ever race in Australian Cup history to result in a tied first place for two different runners.
  2. Secondly, the 1969 edition of the Australian Cup showcased a belter of a race at Flemington Racecourse whereby a dead heat between Yootha and Cyron took place.
  • The most spectacular race in the history of the Australian Cup that I stumbled upon during my research for this 2023 Australian Cup preview was the 1872 Australian Cup. This was the first dead heat in the history of the Australian Cup. However, back then, dead heat races were re-run until a true victor showed itself. Upon the first re-run after the dead heat, another dead heat occurred, sending the 1872 Australian Cup to a third race to decide its victor. Finally, Saladin beat out Flying Dutchman to hoist the trophy and claim a historic victory in the Australian Cup.
  • The 2016 Australian Cup saw Awesome Rock finish first at Flemington Racecourse, however upon review, Awesome Rock was deduced to have caused interference. This resulted in Preferment being crowned champion of the 2016 Australian Cup.
