The Magic Millions 2YO Classic, while not a Group 1, is still one of the biggest races on the Australian calendar. It offers a lot more prize money than many Group One races and therefore it generates a lot of interest.

This 1,200m race will take place on Saturday, 11th January, and is held annually at Gold Coast Racecourse. The Gold Coast Racecourse may not have the same pedigree as the  Flemington Racecourse  or the Royal Randwick Racecourse, but it is still one of the top tracks that sees several race meetings each year.

Each year, you’ll see many up-and-coming 2YOs chance their hand at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, and the $3,000,000 in prize money that is on offer. You’ll see star-studded fields each year, and we will go into further detail about some of these horses later.

The Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 has yet to release an official field for the race. This information will be released closer to race day, so make sure you check back then! Our experts are waiting for more information to become available before providing their best free horse racing tips for the race.

Magic Millions 2YO Classic Best Bet - Storm Boy

I just have to go with the undefeated colt, Storm Boy. Yes, he is the favourite, but that is for good reason. He has won in back-to-back starts, and both wins were impressive, to say the least! Performed superbly when caught three wide in the BJ McLachlan (Group 3). A race in which he ended up winning by over 2L.

The tactics used in that race will likely be deployed here as well, thanks to the wide barrier of 10. Jockey Adam Hyeronimus has the skills to get the job done with Storm Boy, and I’m thinking Gold Coast Racecourse could turn into a leader’s bias track on the day, thanks to the weather.

Magic Millions 2YO Classic Next Best - Arabian Summer

Looking at all the odds, I just don’t understand why Arabian Summer is priced at $7.00! She is as fresh as they come (but aren’t most 2YOs?), but her first two career starts have shown a lot of promise, with a placing in both. These weren’t easy races either, both in black type company.

Her ability to adapt is what I like the most about her and she has shown maturity beyond her years. Her win in the Ballarat Magic Millions was a true spectacle and then she backed that up with another great win in the Gold Pearl. Excellent form coming in should have a bold showing.

Magic Millions 2YO Classic Best Roughie - Wolfgang

Wolfgang is currently quoted $17 for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, but I think he is worth a small play at those odds! He is going for the hat trick in the $3 million race and has an excellent pedigree being an Exceed And Excel colt.

This is the first time we will see him at Gold Coast Racecourse, so that is a query but starts from the same barrier that saw him get a great win in Doomben just a couple of weeks ago. His form is red-hot and gets the services of Blake Shinn. Worth a dabble if you like roughies!

We saw a full field for the 2024 Magic Millions 2YO Classic, including one emergency, Spirited, who ended up getting a run in the race as there were two scratchings. Both Parkour and Mishani Hercules were scratched before the jump.

In horse racing, you’ll find that scratchings happen fairly regularly, even in races like the Magic Millions 2YO Classic where there’s a share of $3 million up for grabs! There can be many reasons why a horse is scratched, and it can happen at any time as well. But, if the horse you bet on does get scratched, at least you know you’ll get your stake back.

Which horses are we talking about? Well, have a read below as we go through some of the best and most successful horses that have ever won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic:

Snippets - 1987

Snippets was the first winner of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic back in 1987. Snippets’ 2YO season was pretty successful. After taking out the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, Snippets went on to win the Sires Produce Stakes. The next year, second in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes and a win in the Oakleigh Plateq. In the end, Snippet had amassed a total of $1,018,540 in prize money.

Testa Rossa - 1999

Testa Rossa won the 1999 edition of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, beating out Sally Magic and Shalt Not. Testa Rossa won a total of $3,034,191 in prize money, thanks to winning a total of six Group 1s. Overall, Testa Rossa’s career record was 28:13-3-0, which is certainly nothing to be sniffed at!

Dance Hero - 2004

Dance Hero got his season off to the best of starts in 2004, winning the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. His career spanned several years and the Gai Waterhouse trained gelding was very successful. He won a total of 10 races throughout his career, which included four Group 1s, this helped to boost his total prize money to almost $4 million!

Sunlight - 2018

Looking at some more recent winners of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic now. In 2018, it was Sunlight that got the lion’s share of the prize money. Sunlight won three Group 1s throughout her career including the Coolmore Stud Stakes in 2018, as well as Newmarket Handicap and the William Reid Stakes in 2019. She was also named the Australian Champion Three Year Old Filly for the 2018-2019 season.

Coolangatta - 2022

The 2022 Magic Millions 2YO Classic win put Coolangatta on the map. Straight after her win in this race, she went on to finish third in the Golden Slipper. She also won the Moir Stakes as well as the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes before being retired. Coolangatta competed in just nine races but won five of them, and it’s no surprise that she has amassed over $3 million in prize money.

The odds are a key piece of information and depending on how high or low they are for a particular runner, you could (or could not) be getting some value! You’ll find that months before Magic Millions 2YO Classic race day, horse racing betting apps will release markets for all potential runners.

As soon as these odds are released, you’ll notice they are constantly changing. The changes in odds will be more significant as information about which runners are targeting the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. If the bookies don’t think a particular runner is going to target the race, the odds for that runner will be very high (or they might not even include odds for that runner at all).

The Magic Millions Carnival is a staple in the Australian horse racing calendar nowadays. There are a few things about it that make it unique. Let’s have a look at these fun facts below:

• The race has always been held at a distance of 1200m.
• Throughout the history of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic race, there have been three winners who have also won the Golden Slipper at Rosehill Racecourse in the same year.

  • Phelan Ready in 2009
  • Dance Hero in 2004
• The Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival was created to complement the Magic Millions auctions.
• The company is owned by Gerry Harvey (a notable breeder in the horse racing industry) and his wife Katie Page. They purchased the company back in 2011.
• Magic Millions auctions account for more than 5,000 horses a year at over 20 different eligible auctions.

The Magic Millions Carnival has been a staple of Queensland horse racing for five years now, with one of the feature races – Magic Millions 2YO Classic, first being held in 1987. The race has had constraints on it since the very first edition, requiring the geldings, colts, and fillies to be under a set weight, as well as requiring the runners to have been bought from a Magic Millions eligible auction.

In 2017, Racing Queensland and Magic Millions gave a new look to what used to be known as the Queensland Summer Racing Carnival, one of the key horse racing carnivals on the calendar. Along with the new name, a drastic increase in prize money was introduced, with a whopping $10 million being put up for grabs

The Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023  is the first of three races throughout the calendar to have a massive prize pool. The others are the Golden Slipper held at Rosehill Racecourse and the Blue Diamond Stakes held at Caulfield Racecourse.

It will be very interesting to see how this carnival develops, as its prize pool matches some of the other giant carnivals and is held at a track where the sun almost always shines. Everyone always looks forward to January every year just because they know the Magic Millions Carnival is happening!

The 2024 Magic Millions 2YO Classic was taken out by the in-form Storm Boy, from barrier 9. This was a good result for punters, with Storm Boy starting as the heavy favourite at $2.50. It was pretty much all over by the top of the straight when jockey Adam Hyeronimus unleashed Storm Boy, and no other runner could get close.

In second place was Highness, who ended up finishing 2.5L off the pace. Spywire wrapped up the final minor placing in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and also meant that trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott had a very good day, training both the winner and the third-placegetter.
