Friday Racing Tips - Pakenham Synthetic Racecourse 01/09/23

Racing returns to the Pakenham Synthetic for a big Friday meeting and we have eight races on the card for a share of $340k prize money in total with the Sportsbet Bet with Mates Synthetic Stayers Series Final being the feature of the day, a BM70 contests run over the 2200m for a share of $50k. There looks to be some progressive VIC and outer state stable runners and I am keen to see how they go so follow me below as I outline my best betting spots of the day at Pakenham.

BEST BET - #9 - Made The Effort (NEXT BEST)
Sticking to my philosophy of backing runners that are tried on the synthetic and Made The Effort fits the profile well and I am quite keen on this John Price trained runner to roll the short priced favourite in this field. He stepped out third up just over a week ago here, with all three runs at this track this time in, and looked super strong all run but just couldn’t get past the very progressive winner who had Billy Egan’s expert steer. He’s hard fit, gets the booking of McDougall and I like his chances a lot here.

THE DANGER - #11 - Celestial Storm
Celestial Storm is the front runner in this field and is deserving. He’s racing for the Griffiths / De Kock stable and resumed from a nineteen week spell at Bendigo over the 1300m where he started an odds on favourite and ran very well there when chasing hard all run and being held up a couple times at crucial stages. Interesting to see him step onto the synthetic now and down 100m in trip but the stable rarely places their runners poorly and a big win wouldn’t shock at all.

VALUE BET  - #5 - Favourite Queen
One of Maher and Eustace’s latest English imports, Favourite Queen steps out here for just her second Australian start after resuming from a massive fifty four week spell and having her first start for the stable at this track over the 1000m where she clearly needed the run under Ben Allen. She should now have plenty of upside second up off that long spell, Ben Allen retains the ride and there is clearly some intent here. She might be looking for longer but keen to see how she goes here.

BEST BET - #1 - Russian Meteor (BEST BET) 
Russian Meteor looks good to make it two from two here and prove that the debut win was no fluke now staying at this track and trip. He debuted here at the beginning of the month where he sat last and two wide before peeling widest on the turn and absolutely thundering home on the outside to clock a big win from the back with seemingly more to offer. He’s only stepping out for his second career start now so will have plenty more to offer and drawing the widest barrier doesn’t seem to affect his run style.

THE DANGER - #4 - General Knowledge 
General Knowledge should have a lot to offer here for Mick Ellerton fourth up here. She closed her last prep off with a really solid 1100m win at Werribee where she swooped the field from the back and has been putting in solid efforts before flopping at Seymour last time out. However, we often see horses make big shifts after having a failed run at that track, which does have a tricky bias, and he’s now hard fit, meets a beatable field and at his best has something on these.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Distorted Mission
Distorted Mission has had two runs back from a spell for Simon Zahra and should be nearing his peak here. He chased hard all straight at Geelong before stepping out to this trip at Cranbourne last time out off a little break and never got any room to let down in an inconclusive run that looks like he should have finished a lot closer. He stays at the trip now from last time out and should be afforded more of a chance in a smaller field with Daniel Stackhouse taking over the ride. Go close.

BEST BET - #1 - Dick Whittington
Can’t knock a winning recipe and Phillip Stokes and Brian Higgins don’t look to be slowing down on Dick Whittington who has won two of his last three and come very close in the other. All three of those runs have come at this track and trip and all of the wins have been sharp as. His last run saw him sit just on the speed and race up to hit the lead and draw clear of them when not giving anything else a chance to even get into the race. I think whilst he strikes his toughest contest now, he just rates too far in front of them and if there is still steam left he wins comfortably.

THE DANGER - #7 - Havisham (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
Havisham comes back to this track after just the one synthetic run that saw him score well at this track / trip and looks well placed here for the Leek stable. That winning run came two back where he raced off the speed before swinging three wide on the turn and chasing strongly to find the front and get the job done in a bob of the heads. That was in a pretty strong field before stepping out last time at The Valley in this grade and nearly backing up where he had to do heaps of early work and put in a seriously brave effort on the wrong part of the track to place third. He’s hard fit, in form and should look the winner at least some of the way in this.

VALUE BET - #5 - Look Sharpish
Look Sharpish is a winning chance here for the Corstens stable. He’s had a few runs this time in but he hasn’t looked to fall off at all. Three and four back he ran at this track over 100m dearer than this when clocking back to back wins in BM64 company before a run in Saturday company and then where he has been honest. His last effort saw him step out at this track and trip where he boxed on well to the line and finished behind the aforementioned Dick Whittington. Not sure he has what it takes to beat Dick Whittington but he can definitely fill the placings here.
