Friday Racing Tips - Sportsbet Pakenham Racecourse 20/10/23

Racing returns to the Sportsbet Pakenham for a big Friday meeting and we have eight races on the card for a share of $320k prize money in total with a few high level contests and the BM78 North Pier Hotel being the feature of the day. There looks to be some progressive VIC and outer state stable runners and I am keen to see how they go so follow me below as I outline my best betting spots of the day at Pakenham.

BEST BET - #10 - Ethel Maude (BEST BET)
Great contest to kick off the day and the straight bat option in Ethel Maude does look like a smart horse who should be approaching peak fitness now and ready to fire with three runs under her belt to kick her career off. She is taking a huge step back in competition after last stepping out over the mile in the Group 2 Edward Manifold stakes where she trucked along in the run well behind the speed before really clicking up and getting going in the last few hundred meters to be strong through the line and finish just behind the placegetters there.

THE DANGER - #9 - Double Glazed
Double Glazed looks like a solid horse for the Sandhu stable who comes into this with a few key gear changes and dropping well back in grade and I think he will make this a race. he last stepped out over the 1800m in the listed Super Impose Stakes where he jumped awkwardly and was forced back in the run but I did like the way he finished the race off there. He gets the blinkers on now and a key claim from Gaudray who will know how to give him every chance. I think he goes close here.

VALUE BET  - #11 - Isla Umi
Isla Umi has only had two career starts but keeps on improving and I expect her to look sharp for her third career start. She was two weeks between runs when stepping out at Sale over the 1750m last time out and she put in a great effort there when setting third in the run and chasing hard the entire straight. They’ve had a change in tactics for this race and I think that with a subsequent winner already coming out of that race she will be competitive here.

BEST BET - #3 - Starianne (NEXT BEST)
Smart horse in Starianne who resumes here for the Busuttin / Young stable and I am tempted to say that she will take this out first up. She hasn’t seen racing for 21 weeks and has had no public trials but her jumpout work a couple weeks back was smart and she does generally go well with fresh legs. She’s got a great record at this distance and a solid first up record and with the light weight and Daniel Moor on I think she’s the leading contender in a small field.

THE DANGER - #2 - Quang Tri
Quang Tri is a horse I have plenty of time for for Patrick Payne and I am keen to see how he goes here as he does generally need one or two more runs. He resumed off of a 27 week spell at Flemington last time out where he got way out of his ground but was solid through the line when he only looked to be moving late. He does generally need one or two more but is a second up winner in the past and this is a beatable field for him.

VALUE BET  - #4 - A Pinch Of Luck
A pinch Of Luck, with some luck, can run into the placings here. He comes into this having had a few runs this time in, with a win and a few sharp placings on the synthetic track here but now gets another chance to grab some prize money getting in at just 53kg with Bull aboard. He draws well and is hard fit, at the big price I wouldn’t discount him from your exotics bets.

BEST BET - #2 - Korobeiniki 
Korobeiniki is an honest horse for the Harnett stable who has been putting in some sharp efforts in higher grade than this and I think with hard fitness and back to this level is the leading contender here. He raced two back at Flemington when being slowly away but powering home over the 1800m to place third behind Foreign Raider in an honest BM70 contest before being trapped deep and wide last time out at Kyneton where he wasn’t able to produce his best. He should get every chance here and I expect him to utilise it.

THE DANGER - #3 - London Point
London Point should be quite sharp here for Maher and Eustace off the back of quite a few runs this time in. He was three weeks between runs when he stepped out over the 1500m at Mornington three weeks back and whilst he had to overcome drawing a wide gate he was very strong late in the piece when coming from last to finish midfield. I think he will be able to settle closer in the run this time and the extra 100m will suit his run style well.

VALUE BET - #4 - Hayai Mesu (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
Hayai Mesu is a good horse for the Hayes Boys that shapes up well in this field and I think with the right sort of run will be prominent here. He resumed off of a 20 week spell at Benalla where he set 9th and two wide in the run before drifting even wider on the turn and really powering home in the last 200m to get so close to winning there when placing second. He then put in another solid effort from off the speed at Cranbourne last time out and now comes into this close to his peak third up and ready to win.
