Friday Racing Tips - Wodonga Racecourse 21/04/23

Friday racing on the 21st April, with a total of nine races to look forward to. The races range from a 1,100 metre sprint in race two to a 2,050 metre staying race in race five, with a soft 6 track rating and the rail in true position. There’s a total prize pool of $243,000 spread across all races. I have outlined my best and next best runners as well as a roughie of the day amongst other bets below for Wodonga’s racing below.

BEST BET - #2 - Futuristic (BEST BET) 
Futuristic resumes and was supported well in both starts in his debut prep last time out and showed some talent then. He was gelded during the break of twenty three weeks to lead him into this and has had a couple sharp jump outs to lead him into this and should be ready to go first up. Looks a good chance in this field.

THE DANGER - #8 - Starbury
Starbury Has had just the one start at the races at The Valley in late February when starting as favourite to some progressive horses and while she looked decent enough in her debut, chasing steadily out wide, she only just plugged there. She’s been freshened up since then for eight weeks and looks well placed in provincial company now to fire first up.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Blame The Whiskey 
Blame the Whiskey is another who has only been to the races once. The three year old for Phillip Stokes didn’t do much on debut at Pakenham but did show some heart when fighting to fade late into sixth. He will be sure to improve into this and gets a huge jockey upgrade to Zac Spain now who can see him run a lot closer.

BEST BET - #6 - First Commandment (NEXT BEST) 
Third up and with Zac Spain aboard, First Commandment looks like a good acne to go over here after resuming at Pakenham over the 1400m and needing the run there, just plugging along to end up fifth. Then went to Ballarat two weeks ago but didn’t really live up when finishing two lengths behind Waitapu. Meets a beatable field here, gets a solid jockey upgrade and can win now hard fit

THE DANGER - #4 -Okra
Another who comes into this third up is Okra for Allan Fitzgerald after resuming inn a BM58 at Albury on March 24th over the 1175m and just plugging along with a lot of weight on her back. She showed a bit more last time out when coming from last on the turn to end up third in another BM58 out to 1400m there. She was huge odds there and now should be even better third up if she can settle closer in the run.

VALUE BET  - #8 - Miss Athena 
Miss Athena has been racing very well, not having missed the placings until her most recent run in a Wagga BM66 two and a half weeks ago when she finished fourth and looked to be at the tail end of her striking distance when they tried her at the 1800m there. She has been as consistent as ever until this point and looks primed back down to this distance.

BEST BET - #6 - She's Rich Enuff 
InShe’s Rich Enuff is a deserving favourite in this field after breaking through at Benalla after two super close placings in her debut prep and the writing was on the wall there. She’s beaten off a few who look better than this field and gets a top chance to make it back to back wins now. If she replicates her race pattern, sitting just behind the speed and changing gears around midfield she will be hard to beat.

THE DANGER - #1 - Lord Sundowner 
Lord Sundowner looks dangerous in this field, even with the big weight. The gelding was runner up last time out over this distance in a Bm58 behind a smart looking horse in Super Sting. Before then she resumed in a BM68 at Yarra Valley behind the likes of Legionnaire. She looks to be rapidly improving between runs and should be very good now third up.

VALUE BET - #2 - Anthemic (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
Anthemic is fifth up for Andrew Dale after being eased out of things in a Kilmore BM58 when fourth of seven on April 13 over the 1200m when carrying a lot of weight. Before then she was last in an Albury BM58 over a similar distance. She has been making big improvements between runs and maps to have a big finish from just off the speed which suits the track. Big chance at nice odds.

Wodonga can be a challenging track to craft a successful multi bet, so I'm opting to stick to a specific strategy for this race day. I've identified those horses up near the speed (in the sprints/mid distance) as the most promising contenders at Wodonga.
