Saturday Racing Tips - Caulfield Racecourse 10/02/24

The Autumn Group 1 races season kicks off this week with Orr Stakes day at Caulfield and we have seven listed races on the card with one Group 1 race in the Sportsbet C.F. Orr Stakes, a 1400m race for a share of $750k prize money. I am very excited to kick off the season in a big way and have picked out my best betting spots of the meeting so follow me below as I outline them here.

BEST BET - #4 - Southport Tycoon (BEST BET)
Southport Tycoon is rates as one of the best bets of the day here at Caulfield in my opinion. This Ciaron Maher trained horse just missed out in the win in the Australia Stakes a fortnight ago where he just couldn’t get a good start but was storming home late to place runner up to Veight. He’s fitter and will take a lot of benefit off of that and should be very hard to beat here.

THE DANGER - #2 - Carbonados
Carbonados was too bad to be true last time out in the Manfred stakes on Australia Day a couple weeks ago but I think that given the price he comes in at now you have to at least give him a look here. He pulled up lame then but the first up win prior at Geelong was just so good that I am happy to be watching how he goes here.

VALUE BET  - #5 - Hey Fat Cat
Hey Fat Cat deserves a look here after winning two on the bounce this prep. He came off of a 20 week break at Sale over the 1200m when taking over at the 300m to go clear of the field and prove far too strong for them. He then stepped out again over the same trip at Sandown Lakeside with the Blinkers on again and kicked strongly through the line to prove too strong once again. Third up and hard fit I think he only runs well here.

BEST BET - #4 - Stay Focused
This is one of the more exciting races of the day and I think that Stay Focused rates as the horse to beat here after his debut run and win at Geelong and I have been strongly considering betting him early for the Blue Diamond as he is at a very nice price right now and a win here would see him significantly come in. He’s had a sharp tick over trial at Pakenham in between runs and I think he is the one to beat here.

THE DANGER - #1 - High Octane
High Octane is going to be a hard horse to catch for the Snowden’s after debuting in the Blue Diamond Preview where he got the A1 steer which saw him come to the fore front of the race and from there he stormed away to win and win well. He should have a stack of improvement coming out of that race now and comes from one of the top juvenile camps, go well.

VALUE BET  - #5 - Holmes A Court (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Holmes A Court is one I can entertain at longer odds in this race. He is another Snowden trained juvenile who comes here after making his debut at Caulfield a couple weeks back where the market gave him no attention but he took over inside the 200m and fought hard to the line to nearly claim the race where him and the winner put a big gap on third. Not sure he wins this but you have to give him a look off how impressive that debut was.

BEST BET - #1 - Mr Brightside (NEXT BEST)
One of the most exciting gallopers in the country returns to racing here in Mr Brightside and I imagine he’s going to prove very tough to get past here. The Hayes boys bring him here after an outstanding Spring that eventuated in him losing by less than a head to Romantic Warrior in a thrilling edition of the Cox Plate and his two jumpouts to lead him back into racing have both been sharp. 

THE DANGER - #9 - Veight
Veight comes into this race at the perfect time to pick up the Group 1 win against the older boys as he strikes a race when he’s hard in form and at his ideal distance range. He got a great drag into the race in the Australia Stakes where he was outstanding late last time out and can replicate the success that last year’s three year old had in this race, Jacquinot. 

VALUE BET - #8 - Pride Of Jenni
If you have been following me for awhile you would know how much of a fan of Pride Of Jenni I am for Ciaron Maher. Her Spring campaign was unreal when winning the Empire Rose before really putting on a display in the Champions Mile as she beat Mr Brightside. Both the jumpouts to lead her back into racing have been sharp and whilst she will have a few around her with similar speed she will be very strong undoubtedly.

Avdulla has found great form this year with a near 50% place rate and near 20% strike rate. He has been super consistent in NSW and that has been recognised to a large extent by the bookings that he has been getting. He gets a top selection of rides for some prominent stables such as James Cummings and Chris Waller and I think he is a top shot to pick up at least one win on Saturday at Caulfield.

Whilst it is scary to tip in some of the bigger field races I think that with it being early in the season and a lot of runners being on resumption that there are some clear top picks in each field and as such I have combined my best runners of the day into a place multi. Whilst it might not be the same level of value we generally get I think that it is a worthwhile bet and has a good chance of coming in.
