Saturday Racing Tips - Caulfield Racecourse 16/03/24

It’s All Star Mile Day at Caulfield and wow it feels like this Autumn Group 1 races season is flying by. We are privileged to have such a big card on the horizon. I am very much looking forward to some of the Stakes races we have on the card and the highlight of the day, the All Star Mile, a 1600m race for a share of $3.75 million prize money. I have run through the card and picked out my best betting spots so follow me below!

BEST BET - #7 - Carini (NEXT BEST)
Carini looks like a nice bank roll opening bet for Danny O’Brien here after racing in the Blamey two weeks ago where he was ridden vigorously, getting onto the speed and doing plenty of work out wide before just fading late into fifth place. That wasn’t the most economical run but he would have retained a stack of fitness benefit off of that run. Hard fit now and out to prime striking distance for him, he surely wins this

THE DANGER - #3 - Muramasa
Muramasa is a key threat for the Busuttin and Young camp who came back to racing a fortnight ago in the same race as Carini when being buried quite deep in the run but he was making very solid ground late in the piece despite not being a winning threat behind Atishu. He gets set up a lot better for the run this time in and still might want one more but he’s got plenty of upside and can take this out.

VALUE BET  - #5 - Mankayan
Mankayan has been awfully close to a win in his past couple runs and comes out of a race three weeks ago when running second to Dunkel. He was awfully close then when powering home to be beaten on the line and with no horse of the same quality as Dunkel in this race, Zahra aboard and hard fitness he should be strong here.

BEST BET - #11 - Peace Treaty (BEST BET)
Peace Treaty is a well placed favourite for the Freedman camp who comes here having not raced since Summer when she put two wins on the bounce in very fine fashion. She’s now been given a nice break and her recent jumpout work was extremely sharp when winning at Balnarring. I think she will be onto bigger and better things and can kick them off with a first up win here.

THE DANGER - #2 - My Bella Mae
My Bella Mae is the Western Aussie coming here five weeks between runs since racing at Bunbury under Parnham in a listed race where she finished off the best in the race to my eye anyway when running home into second place to a sharp horse in Real Danger. I’m not sure about the trip but the stable has obviously brought her across her with intent and she maps to do no work in the run.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Waltz On By
Waltz On By has come very close in his recent run for Peter Moody and Kathy Coleman when running down the Flemington straight a fortnight ago. She was a bit flat footed throughout the run but as the race went on she really got going late and ran second to Sans Doute. She should be even stronger getting out to the 1200m now and I think only runs well here.

BEST BET - #1 - Mr Brightside
It is hard to get away from Mr brightside who is just one of the most classy horses going around but he is very short here. He won in a very close go in the CF Orr and then stepped out in the Futurity where he absolutely belted them, teaching them a lesson with a boastful win. He should relish getting out to the mile but will be giving quite a few lengths to Pride Of Jenni. He can definitely take this out and is the leading contender but this is closer than the odds might suggest.

THE DANGER - #12 - Pride Of Jenni
Pride Of Jenni has to rate as the main danger here given how she has come back to racing for Ciaron Maher. She has taken out two Group 1’s and her resuming effort in the Cf Orr stakes when coming back from a 13 week break from racing was beautiful, only being grabbed late by Mr Brightside when looking the winner a long way. She has jumped out very well leading into this assignment and should be hard to catch from out front in this race.

VALUE BET - #9 - Ayrton (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
I have a feeling that Aryton has come back in a massive way for the Price and Kent stable and I think he can take this out at a very nice price. A few years ago he would have been favourite to win this. He last raced in the CF Orr where he was enormous after being held up from the 500m to 300m but closing hard and fast to the line when third to Atishu. Should be extremely sharp with clear air here.

Avdulla has found great form this year with a near 50% place rate and near 20% strike rate. He has been super consistent in NSW and that has been recognised to a large extent by the bookings that he has been getting. He gets a top selection of rides for some prominent stables such as James Cummings and Chris Waller and I think he is a top shot to pick up at least one win on Saturday at Caulfield.

Whilst it is scary to tip in some of the bigger field races I think that with it being early in the season and a lot of runners being on resumption that there are some clear top picks in each field and as such I have combined my best runners of the day into a place multi. Whilst it might not be the same level of value we generally get I think that it is a worthwhile bet and has a good chance of coming in.
