Saturday Racing Tips - Caulfield Racecourse 18/10/23

One of the biggest Group 1 races days of the season heads to caulfield tomorrow for Caulfield Cup Day with the Group 1 Caulfield Cup being the feature of the day, a 2400m WFA race for a share of a massive $5 million prize money. It’s going to be an awesome day with three group two’s as well and a bunch of listed races to support and I have run through the three biggest races so follow me below for my best tips for Caulfield Cup Day racing!

BEST BET - #12 - Lovely Lookin’
Smart horse for the Gluyas stable in Lovely Lookin’ who is flying and looks to make this three in a row. She has had just the three career starts but after scoring dominantly in her second start she stepped back out at Morphettville Parks and thrashed another field there, winning by lengths. She obviously takes a sharp step up in competition now but she looks more than up to the task and will continue to progress IMO. I think she rises to the occasion.

THE DANGER - #3 - Coeur Volante
Another smart horse who is looking to make it three in a row is Coeur Volante for Mick Moroney who debuted at Sandown before staying at the course and shedding the maiden tag with ease and then came off of a 15 week break from racing last time out where he claimed the G3 Scarborough stakes in quite impressive fashion given he was first up there. I expect a big showing with natural improvement second up.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Bossy Nic (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Bossy Nic is dangerous at her best and he should be improving into this run. The Team McEvoy trained filly resumed in the Scarborough that Coeur Volante won and despite not winning there I think she ran on very strongly when coming from deep in the field to be beaten just under a length in third. She will improve off the back of that and will be running on strongly late again undoubtedly.

BEST BET - #6 - Spacewalk (BEST BET)
A Caulfield sprint! I am excited for this one and like the look James Cummings’ Spacewalk has returned to racing. He seems to have come back very well with his return to racing off of a 16 week break at Warwick Farm being a dominant win in great time. He looks to have the race shape in his favour as well and anything above $2.00 is a great price IMO.

THE DANGER - #1 - Lofty Strike
Another great horse who will make this a race is Lofty Strike who is resuming here for Julius Sandhu having not raced since the Goodwood where he was a way out of his ground but ran home strongly into fourth place. He does his best work with fresh legs and has jumped out well leading into this. He has a similar runstyle to Spacewalk so watch for these two powering home together late. Very excited.

VALUE BET  - #4 - General Beau 
General Beau is a bomb fresh horse for the Ellerton camp who comes back to racing here off of a let up and should be ready to go over here. He’s got two fresh wins and a close runner up placing in six campaigns and loves this track, only being unsighted in half of his starts here. I think that from the good gate and Damian Lane in the saddle they’ll be competitive here.

BEST BET - #1 - Gold Trip (NEXT BEST) 
It is very hard to get away from Gold Trip who seems to be working towards making it two Melbourne Cup’s in a row. He proved last year that he can run and run well in all three majors and looks set to do it again, arguably having come back in even better form this time around. His last run in The Turnbull was just absolutely astounding in terms of how easy it looked for him to clock that electric win and whilst he goes up in the weights here I doubt it being enough to stop him

THE DANGER - #8 - Soulcombe 
Soulcombe is rarely the best away horse but he has been absolutely going like a jet in his three runs back from a spell this prep and with Craig Williams on he should get every chance here. He gets in super light, better than most in this field and I think based on the way he ran in the Turnbull, getting out to this distance now will see him go very well here. I don’t think there’s too much more to it, if Williams gives him a good steer he will feature here.

VALUE BET - #2 - Without A Fight
Without A fight is a bomb horse for the Freedman’s that resumed off of a 15 week spell in the Underwood a few weeks back and had a bit go wrong in the run but it was a massive return to racing despite that IMO. He hampered at the 1600m and was held up for a run in the straight but when he got clear air he was absolutely flying to the line. He has a great second up record, goes out to his striking distance now and I expect him to be prominent here.

Avdulla has found great form this year with a near 50% place rate and near 20% strike rate. He has been super consistent in NSW and that has been recognised to a large extent by the bookings that he has been getting. He gets a top selection of rides for some prominent stables such as James Cummings and Chris Waller and I think he is a top shot to pick up at least one win on Wednesday at Caulfield.

Whilst it is scary to tip in some of the bigger field races I think that with it being early in the season and a lot of runners being on resumption that there are some clear top picks in each field and as such I have combined my best runners of the day into a place multi. Whilst it might not be the same level of value we generally get I think that it is a worthwhile bet and has a good chance of coming in.
