Saturday Racing Tips - Doomben Racecourse 08/04/23

The Doomben racecourse is set to host a thrilling day of racing on Saturday 8th April, with a total of nine races on the card. From sprints to staying races, we should see some nice types go round. Track conditions at soft 5,  a total prize pool of $785,000 up for grabs and The Mekkafest 19 August Handicap as feature should see it be an exciting day of racing. The weather should hold up okay in Queensland as opposed to the rest of this country at the moment and I think it will make for an exciting day of racing.

BEST BET - #5 - Ringer’s Reward (NEXT BEST)
Ringer's Reward is a mare trained by Kevin Kemp who is on a seven-day back up after racing over 1200m last Saturday at this track. She wasn't a threat in that race but made up some very solid ground and was good in defeat behind the fitter/further into prep Oceans Of Energy. If she gets clear running which she should out to the 1350m I think she has the class on a couple of these to take this out

THE DANGER - #2 - Himeji 
Himeji is a gelding who should improve off his debut two weeks ago at Eagle Farm over the 1400m and raced very greenly there, doing quite a bit wrong. However, he stuck on well in defeat behind the all-the-way winner Bobby Shiraz. There are no horses in this race that are of that caliber, that form and natural improvement suggests he will be in this for a long way.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Spicy Legend 
Spicy Legend, a colt trained by Gary Portelli, showed promise on debut in Sydney and is expected to improve here. He was midfield in a field of 10 at Randwick Kensington and was a longshot at odds of $61, but still managed to finish just 5 lengths behind the winner, Libertad. With that race experience under his belt, he should be better suited to this race at Doomben and is definitely one to keep an eye on coming from such an in-form stable.

BEST BET - #2 - Red Wave - (NEXT BEST)
Red Wave won impressively three weeks ago at this track/distance and should improve off that again. He was given an absolute peach on that day by Benny Thompson, who found a great spot for him and presented him at the right time. Still, it takes a good thing to go through the gears the way that Red Wave did when asked for effort and I think he will be very difficult to beat now fitter, better for the runs at the course and I think he has a bit of class on these.

THE DANGER - #11 - Applications 
Applications attempted to lead in his last race over this track/distance a couple weeks ago when in contention with the aforementioned Red Wave but the pace was too hot there and he wore himself down in the process. However, that was his first run back at the races and with three weeks between runs he should still be fit and will improve sharply second up. Big chance if he shows up how he should on paper.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Sneak Preview (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
Sneak Preview is a David Vandyke-trained gelding that has been good in two runs back from a spell. He has a good record at the mile and should be around or nearing peak fitness third up now. In his most recent run at Eagle Farm over 1400m, he found the line well behind Indispensable even though he was well back in the field at the 4/500m mark he passed a few there. Vandyke is flying at the moment and should see Sneak Preview sharp for this.

BEST BET - #1 - Hilal (BEST BET)
Hilal is a proven performer for Tony Gollan who confused me a bit when resuming at the beginning of the month at Eagle Farm when he just plugged along, not really doing anything behind Jetty. However, he took a three week break before coming back to that same track and trip and looked a whole lot more like himself when having a big power home from the back to place to The Big Goodbye. He’ll be ready for this now third up and he shouldn’t have any excuses come race day. Big chance.

THE DANGER - #10 - Roman Aureus
Roman Aureus has a great record at this track and is always a threat when he is in this distance range. He tried hard, chasing all run in the Gold Jewel three weeks ago with an ever so tough run from the inside draw, and honestly it was impressive that he finished fourth to Last Chance there as he just did it so tough. He’s always around the mark and has to be respected with what you would imagine can be a lot softer run on the speed from the draw.

VALUE BET - #13 - Legal Esprit 
Legal Esprit is is third-uptoday  and has a strong record racing third up, with a 50 percent strike rate. His recent form has been good, only missing out by a head last start and finishing third in his two previous races. He looks to be at absolute peak now and should get a nice run in transit, just about what he has left for them inside that last 200m. If he's around the mark at the turn I think he will have plenty to give. Don’t treat lightly.
