Saturday Racing Tips - Doomben Racecourse 09/09/23

Racing comes back to Doomben for what has shaped up to be a sick little nine race card that features some of the more prominent Queensland and NSW stables’ runners who look to be on their ways towards nice preps during the Spring and whilst there is no listed racing to be run at the course this Saturday there does look to be some very nice betting spots on the card. I am keen to get straight into things and have outlined my best betting spots on the card below.

BEST BET - #8 - Outlawed (NEXT BEST)
Outlawed is one of my favourite Queenslanders and has been flying since joining the Heathcoate stable and meets a beatable field here. She last stepped out last Wednesday over the 1200m here and absolutely throttled them from out front under Benny Thompson’s astute steering. She takes her first step up to Saturday comp but rates a ways in front of these and I think she will go well here.

THE DANGER - #16 - Tiger Shark
Tiger Shark maps to get the right kind of run for this course, drawing a low barrier and likely maps to find the front where she should have a site. She ran at this track and trip two weeks ago where she applied that strategy and it paid off with a big win from out front. If she can find the front again she will be strong in the run until the end.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Piece Of Turf
Piece of Turf seems to have come back a new horse since joining the Birchley camp and resumed at the Sunshine Coast where she sat just behind a solid tempo and kept on finding the line with real purpose to beat all but the winner who was just too far out in front. He will be a lot fitter for that run now and goes out to 1200m which all look like positives. Sure to run well.

BEST BET - #11 - Dark Harmony
Dark Harmony looks like a standout pick in this field for Chris Munce and is well overdue for a win. He’s put together three sharp placings in his last three outtings and last time out he raced at this track and trip off a short three week break where he did lots of early work to lead and gave a good kick in the straight but just couldn’t get there over the eventual winner. He will be sharper now, draws a good gate and gets in light. Sure to run well.

THE DANGER - #8 - Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egypt will have to get past a bad gate but is absolutely flying for Barry Lockwood which often is the case with those who come over to him. Both of his two runs for the stable have been very good efforts when running a big 1350m race fresh before going to the Sunshine Coast and putting in another impressive effort where she came from back in the field to spank them late. She should be at her peak now and will be tough to beat here. 

VALUE BET  - #9 - Magic Conqueror (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Magic Conqueror looks well placed for Kelly Schweida here and I think presents as overs in this field off the back of his run last Wednesday at this track / trip where he sat on the speed and looked the winner but just didn’t let down with enough purpose and battled away in the straight when finishing just behind a smart Beaufort Park. He now strips a lot fitter off the back of that and I think he likely runs better than his price.

BEST BET - #3 - Spin Doctor (BEST BET)
Spin Doctor looks like a good thing going for the O’Dea / Hoystead after resuming two weeks here over the 1200m here where he gave them way too much of a start last time out before really clicking up late in the piece and powering home to clock the best 600m of the day behind the super progressive Tiger Shark. That form reads the best of this race, he’ll be fitter now, draws a good gate and goes out to the 1350m. Surely wins this.

THE DANGER - #4 - Deep Respect 
Deep Respect has to be respected in this field as the name suggests and has had a flying start to his career for Kelly Schweida. He debuted a winner here when throttling a soft field before stepping out to a tougher race, the same as the one the aforementioned Spin Doctor was in at this track where he tried his guts out but just couldn’t get past Tiger Shark in an effort that saw him place second there. He should be at just about his peak now third up and looks like a star in the making.

VALUE BET - #5 - Kitri
Kitri is a tough one to get right but I do think that this distance will be very good for him. She ran in a few weeks ago at Eagle Farm when just getting caught and held up at the wrong time but did get some clear air late where she clocked impressive splits and was flying home but was never a winning chance. Before then she smashed a decent field over the 1200m at this track and now looks to be at something of her peak with the extra metres, all looks positive.
