Saturday Racing Tips - Doomben Racecourse 20/05/23

The Brisbane Winter Carnival is well and truly underway off the back of a successful Doomben 10,000 day with nine races on the card, six group level races and one group 1 it should make for a very exciting Doomben Cup Day. The feature of the day is the XXXX Doomben Cup, run over 2000m for a share of $1,000,000 prize money. I have outlined my best betting spots for what promises to be a super competitive card below!

Doomben R5 - Impressu Darby McCarthy 3yo (1110m)

Selections:
#6 - Helluva Barty (BEST BET) - $5.50
#4 - Golden Boom - $2.20
#11 - Lady laguna - $4.80
#1 - Spacewalk - $6.00

BEST BET - #6 - Helluva Barty (BEST BET)
Helluva Barty has to be respected here coming back from a 14 week spell after scoring in her last two for the O’Dea/Hoystead Camp. Both of those wins have been at this track over this distance range (1000m-1200m) and both have been ever impressive, having to overcome adversity in the form of traffic or wide gates in those runs to still prove too good. I think he was spelled with the Carnival in mind and based off the trial work they have her ready to go over first up now and make it 3/3.

THE DANGER - #4 - Golden Boom
Golden Boom is a serious horse for Tony Gollan who resumed off of a half year spell a few weeks back at this course and was far from disgraced then when running three wide with no cover and the tough run told when he eased down a bit but the spirit was there as he just kept fighting to the line. Has had a tick over trial since where he absolutely trucked along in the run and if he shows up like that he will give these a serious challenge.

VALUE BET  - #11 - Lady laguna
Lady Laguna should look very strong at this distance after running two weeks ago in the Gold Coast Guineas at the Sunny Coast where she shifted out from just behind the speed and looked to be charging home for the win but couldn’t get one over Yellow Brick, who just had a bigger finale than her. Comes back in trip a bit and should be able to time her run for that flash finish to see her in the placings.

Doomben R6 - XXXX Chief De Beers (1110m)

Selections:
#4 - The Big Goodbye (NEXT BEST)  - $6.00
#11 - King Kapa - $3.50
#6 - Zethus - $8.00
#14 - Orbisyn - $6.00

BEST BET - #4 - The Big Goodbye (NEXT BEST)
I like the look of The Big Goodbye for this race. The Rob Heathcote trained five year old has scored in two and placed in one in her last four, defeating some pretty serious horses in the process such a Hilal when racing two back at Eagle Farm over the 1200m. Last time out she crossed from the widest gate in the ATC Cup at Sunshine Coast and tried hard all run in a brave effort from a tough run to end up just behind the placings. Proves that she is still fit and has a lot of class, Collet is on and they draw well, keen on her prospects.

THE DANGER - #11 - King Kapa
King Kapa last ran at Eagle farm when resuming from a twelve week spell and ran a shocker when finishing last in the field after being backed as if he were a moral you would think the Vet would have found issues but didn’t find any… Scored in four consecutive races before then, has a good second up record, moved along very nicely to win a trial and you’d just have to assume last run was an anomaly and back him with some confidence again.

VALUE BET  - #6 - Zethus
I think Zethus is going to have a good campaign this time in for Cummings. He’s a well bred horse who resumed in the Gold Rush at Hawkesbury behind Malkovich which ties into a few others here and whilst Malkovich gave nothing else a chance to get into the race there, I thought that Zethus closed off to finish one of the best in the field there. Historically has made big improvements second up and he generally goes better with a bit of pace on, which looks like he will get in this. Watch what the market does.

Doomben R7 - XXXX Doomben Cup (2000m)

Selections:
#1 - Zaaki - $1.85
#13 - Kovalica - $10.00
#11 - Duais (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $16.00
#3 - Huetor - $11.00

BEST BET - #1 - Zaaki
Never going to be easy to go past Zaaki who resumed at Randwick when third before going onto the Hollindale two weeks back at the Sunny Coast where he made history, winning his third Hollindale in a row in an ever brave effort where he did heaps of work, was challenged and still had enough to hold them at bay. He should improve third up now and is one of the best Weight For Age runners in the country.

THE DANGER - #13 - Kovalica
Kovalica steps up for his first test against the older horses and the two other three-year-olds that have done so, Giga Kick and Ruthless Dame, have both won Group 1 WFA races recently. He has a tricky barrier to overcome but has been enormous so far this preparation, with the QLD Guineas win being one of the best i’ve seen this season. He’s hard fit, ready for this trip and as long as the injury that saw him scratched last week has gone down I think he can get one over Zaaki.

VALUE BET - #11 - Duais (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Duais holds a soft spot in my heart, being the first horse that I watched win a race live at Randwick a few years ago and I must say it was sad to watch the failure that was her Spring campaign last year. They left her out of the Autumn Prep as well to focus on this Winter one and it seems like something is working as the Jumpout/Trial work has been awesome to see and at her best she has that late sprint that not many horses do. 2000m fresh means the stable is keen and it would make me so happy to see her go over here and find that class that we all know she has.

Best Promotions for Doomben Racecourse

Promotions are traditionally the primary way for punters to create an edge over the bookies, as they can save your cash when your runner fails to win, in the instance of Unibet they often offer 2nd and 3rd money back in bonus bets for a selection of races on the midweek and Provincial racing days. Coupled with their generous odds I have to put them as the top bookie promotion wise at the moment for Australian racing.

If you are looking for the best promotions this week for Wednesday's racing I wouldn’t look past Unibet, often they offer odds boosts in addition to the money back promotions. Don’t forget to check your account as well for personal offers.

Promotions often change so make sure you sign up at unibet.com.au to see what promotions are applicable to you and you may even be surprised to find some promotions that weren’t mentioned here!
