Saturday Racing Tips - Doomben Racecourse 22/07/23

Another great support card for the Listed racing in NSW and VIC this weekend takes place at Doomben and I am very keen on a few of the top Queensland stables having put forward what looks to be some progressive horses who should be onto bigger things in the weeks to come of the Winter Carnivals taking place around the Country. There are nine races to be run in mixed grades but all are high level and the feature open sprint of the day over the 1200m in race eight is set to be an exciting highlight of the contest. Follow me below as I outline the race card!

BEST BET - #7 - Atlantic Eagle 
I am keen on the second favourite in betting Atlantic Eagle in this opening staying contest who stepped up 600m in distance last start from the 1400m to 2000m at this track and beat Carbonetti at her first try at the distance. Carbonetti came out to smash a Saturday grade race after that and whilst Atlantic Eagle gets an honest contest now, she drops nearly 5 kg for this assignment and doesn’t need to find much more off the back of that last run to win this. Very keen.

THE DANGER - #1 - Mississippi Prince
Obvious danger in the race is Brent Gray’s Mississippi Prince who goes out to this trip for the first time which is the query with her but if she does what she has in her past couple she will be tough to beat from out front. Two runs back she bounded to the front over the 1666m at Ipswich and kept the field at bay quite easily there before running the same trip at this course last time out when just being eased out of it late. She will be hard fit now, maps to find the front easily and if she stays she wins. 

VALUE BET  - #2 - Stardome (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Chris Waller has been having success with his Northern Stayers and Stardome seems like one for the stable who has been looking to get out to these distance ranges. He ran two weeks ago on resumption since early May over the Mile at this course where he was only beaten three lengths and seemed to have returned better than I expected first up. He’s won two and placed in three at this track, won two from nine at this distance and gets Orman for the ride. Can’t see him going badly here.

BEST BET - #3 - Reliable Ruby (NEXT BEST) 
Surely now is Reliable Ruby’s time to make it two from two against the short priced favourite Inasec. She met Inasec two back when racing here over the 1050m and they had an honest battle in the straight but Reliable Ruby eventually got the best of her to win narrowly but impressively there. She then raced over the 1000m at Sunshine Coast last time out where she was shuffled back along the rail in the run but still came on strongly to finish fourth there. She maps to be close in the run from barrier four, knows how to run at Doomben which is always a big tick and I genuinely think she wins.

THE DANGER - #6 - Inasec
It has been an expensive follow to keep tipping Inasec and whilst she really is genuine for Tony Gollan she just keeps bumping into smart horses and has now gone down as a close second placing in all three of her last runs. Last time out she raced here two weeks ago when coming on strongly from midfield/rear to pass all but the on pacer Skidamarink. She’s always a very real threat and the short quote is justifiable, just too short for me.

VALUE BET  - #10 - Field Wiri 
Field Wiri is a good thing going for the Freedmans and has come back to racing in great order this prep, he can definitely go on with it now and make it two wins in four starts this time in. Last time out he raced over the 1200m at Newcastle where the writing was on the wall from the run prior at the same track/trip and he thundered home at the 250m from two wide to win comfortably there. He clocked some very good late splits relative to the meeting then and now looks super competitive at peak fitness going into this.

BEST BET - #10 - Simbu (BEST BET) 
Outstanding sprint that we have in front of us at Doomben, I am very keen for this one that has a few key chances that stuck up pretty evenly but I think that the Tony Gollan trained Simbu will shape up the best third up now from barrier two. He has won both his runs this time in, the first coming at this track/trip before going to the Sunny Coast where he didn’t run as well there but his class saw him win. His times have been good and he’s rock hard fit now, gets the gun draw to find the best alley at the course and with the added little weight relief from Jones I don’t see him being out of the trifecta.

THE DANGER - #7 - Vodka Martini 
There is another key danger in this race in #3 - Matilly but I think based on race times / upside that Vodka Martini is going to give a big sight here. The Schweida gelding has had two runs this time in, the first of which was a sprint here where she placed behind the lies of Matilly and Golden Boom in a great first up effort before racing at the 1200m at Eagle Farm where she again clocked some great splits and overall time to finish a close runner up there. She now is hard fit third up, looks good at this track / trip and gets in at just 53kg with the claim from Graham. Keen to see how she goes but confident she measures up, just a bit too short for me to be on.

VALUE BET - #5 - Bring Me Kash

Outside of the top three facurites in betting I think that the true sprinting horse for the Ward stable in Bring Me Kash is very suited in a race like this. He won two back at the Sunshine Coast over this distance where he was able to take over from out wide and power away there. He then raced three weeks ago at the track again where he sat on the speed and just faded late. He’s hard fit now, will likely be ridden on the speed again which will serve him a lot better at Doomben than at the Sunshine Coast and will likely fill a first four spot but can definitely win this the way he has been going.

For Doomben it is crucial to take into account the biases on the track and focus on horses that are deeper into their preps and also to consider their suitability to the conditions. I have done as such and picked out my best spots from my bets on the card and hope that it will make for an exciting bet to track over race day.
