Saturday Racing Tips - Doomben Racecourse 24/02/24

A good support card up North comes back to Doomben with ten races at one of Queensland’s premier Saturday racing tracks and I have run through the card and picked out my best betting spots. There seems to be some very progressive horses stepping out at the meeting so watch for them in my tips below!

BEST BET - #2 - American Phireball (NEXT BEST)
American Phireball has to rate highly here for Chris Munce after running at this trac and trip last Wednesday where he let them get out in front and then let down very well from the back of the pack in a sharp display to win very nicely. He gets an even better map this time in and is hard fit, he will be very tough to get past IMO.

THE DANGER - #3 - Notacluehoworwho
Notacluehoworwho shapes up as one of the sharper dangers in this field after running at this track over the 1350m a few weeks back. He was near the back of the run then after botching the start but he was extremely strong through the line when only beaten a length and a half to a smart horse. I think he now strikes his ideal distance range and with the runs aboard he can feature here.

VALUE BET  - #4 - Per Capita
Per Capita seems to have come back to racing in really good order after switching camps from Annabel Neasham to Stephen Lee and resuming off of a very long 39 week spell at Grafton a few weeks back where he sat on the speed and two wide but proved far too good for them despite the tough run and should only be improving now.

BEST BET - #2 - Boom Torque (BEST BET)
Boom Torque has to be given another look here after winning the Magic Millions QTIS before stepping out at this track a fortnight ago where he was ridden too hot and then it didn’t work out well when he just got tired late in the piece. He should park just behind the speed and be running home hard here.

THE DANGER - #7 - Viminele
Viminele is arguably in career best form for Lindsay Gough and rates as one of the toughest horses to beat in this field after running two back at the Sunny Coast where a steering error cost him the race before coming here where Bayliss had him drive hard late between runners to finish over the top of the field. He can continue to progress from there.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Brentwood
Brentwood should be approaching his peak third up after resuming with a win over the 1200m at Eagle Farm three weeks ago where she landed on the speed and looked to have every chance when running a very close third placing. She shapes up hard fit now but the depth is certainly there in this line up so I think she’s one for the exotics.

BEST BET - #3 - Daytona Bay 
Daytona Bay has been on the drift but I think he’s a good bet in the get out here. He comes into this three weeks between runs since since stepping out at Eagle Farm over the 1400m, leading the field and never letting anything else into the race when strong through the line. He has won all the way out to 1800m so 1600m doesn’t pose any real issues and I think if anyone will see him overcome the gate it’s Jimmy.

THE DANGER - #10 - The Elanora
I do think given this is a get out and all that The Elanora should be a lot closer in the market to Daytona Bay after the way she has been running for Billy Healey and he shapes up well here. He came here two weeks ago after a good run in the Sunshine Coast Cup where he found the line very well behind a smart horse. He’s third up, hard fit and will be strong here.

VALUE BET - #4 - Sneak Preview (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
A typical Graham and Vandyke combination here but a not so typical horse in Sneak Preview who has looked incredible in his past three runs, winning each of them in fine fashion and comes here chasing a fourth consecutive win and looking to close out the campaign in a big way. I think he shapes up very well here and should be going strong, watch very closely.

For Doomben it is crucial to take into account the biases on the track and focus on horses that are deeper into their preps and also to consider their suitability to the conditions.
