Saturday Racing Tips - Doomben Racecourse 26/08/23

Racing comes back to Doomben for what has shaped up to be a sick little nine race card that features some of the more prominent Queensland and NSW stables’ runners who look to be on their ways towards nice preps during the Spring and whilst there is no listed racing to be run at the course this Saturday there does look to be some very nice betting spots on the card. I am keen to get straight into things and have outlined my best betting spots on the card below.

BEST BET - #4 - Red Top
This is definitely one of the more open contests of the day but I think that there are a couple key chances, Red Top being the best of the lot and the option that makes the most sense here. He comes into this off the back of a sharp little win at the Eagle Farm midweeks where he was way too good for the field and looks set to go on with it now with a nice 3kg claim from Molloy and a solid draw. Keen to see how he goes.

THE DANGER - #1 - Ashgrove 
Obvious danger in Ashgrove who has confused me at times as he always looks promising but hasn’t really done an awful lot in his last couple but the talent is there. He’s had three runs this time in and after just missing here two back he stepped out at Eagle Farm (1500m) last time where he was a bit flat and I assume had some issues. He’s been turned around quite quickly for this, Orman gets the booking so there is intent and I think he runs well again now.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Bettcha The Crown (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
If Bettcha The Crown can find what he had been producing prior to his last run he will undoubtedly be very strong here and I am keen to wait to see how he looks in the yard before laying any chalk. He put together three sharp wins in four runs before stepping out over the 1400m at Eagle Farm last time where he got too far back in the run and was just flat towards the end. He looked to be at the end of his prep then but clearly the stable thinks he has more to offer as he has been placed again here. Keen to see what happens, he definitelhy has what it takes to beat these.

BEST BET - #7 - Vodka Martini (BEST BET)
Not an awful lot of value here but I do think there is a standout exacta / exotics opportunity that I will cover in my exotics tips article but for now I think that Vodka Martini should be winning this. His last win came a fotnight ago over the 1000m where he sat on the speed and was never in doubt when asked for even the slightest bit of effort he clicked up and powered away from the field there. He draws a soft gate, the only query will be the end of the 1200m but he has lengths of class.

THE DANGER - #2 - Birriecart 
The other I am particularly keen on who I think can roll Vodka Martini here is the O’Dea / Hoystead trained Birriecart who took a couple runs to get going this prep in some tough contests before really clicking up last time when he came off a three week break at this course and after being held up in the straight, squeezed a gap and won well. He’s 5 / 5 at this track and trip so how could you deny him a chance to maintain that crazy record. Very keen.

VALUE BET  - #10 - Coco Rox
Coco Rox is an honest horse who I don’t know if she has the same class as the two aforementioned runners but she definitely has what it takes to be in the finish. She smashed a soft field at Grafton two runs ago before stepping up to metro racing at Eagle Farm last time out where she sat outside the leader and tried to control the race but the tactics didn’t work out and she faded late. She gets back onto the tighter track now which will force her to have her mannerisms right and I think she runs a much improved race here.

BEST BET - #1 - Snowzone (NEXT BEST) 
Snowzone is the fourth highest top rater in this meeting with the fourth highest gap to second place in any field and at the price I have to have something on. He’s an awesome runner for Kris Lees who does his best work here and after stepping out third up last time at the Sunshine Coast over this distance where he drew a few lengths clear late after looking to have something in hand all run I am keen on his prospects to go on with it. Mallyon retains the ride, who has a serious strike rate when combining with Lees, Snowzone doesn’t take on any extra weight, nice gate, nice price, keen.

THE DANGER - #8 - Spaceboy
Spaceboy maps to get the right kind of run to take advantage of the front running bias at Doomben and from the low draw he will jump and likely lead them out front and should still have what it takes late in the piece with the added fitness from his last run. He ran over this distance at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where he sat outside the leader and tried to claim the race early in the straight but was outkicked on the wide track by a few of those who saved their energy. Back onto the tight track is positive and will be fitter, deserving favourite.

VALUE BET - #4 - Stuttering 
Rob Heathcoate has been having a cracker season up North, which isn’t unusual, but he looks to have a particularly good thing going in Stuttering who went away a winner over the mile here and now comes back off of an 18 week spell and looks ready to go off the back of a few sharp trials and jumpouts. He races well with fresh legs and really doesn’t take many to get going, is 2-1-1 from seven runs at this track and trip and has another win here, rarely running badly at the course. I am not sure he wins this but he can definitely fill the placings and should be one to follow after this.

For Doomben it is crucial to take into account the biases on the track and focus on horses that are deeper into their preps and also to consider their suitability to the conditions.
