Saturday Racing Tips - Eagle Farm Racecourse 07/10/23

Racing comes back to Eagle Farm this Saturday for Queensland Cup day and it looks like a great day up North with ten races on the card and the feature of the day being the XXXX Queensland Cup, a 2400m staying race for a share of $160k prize money. There looks to be a bunch of competitive races so follow me below as I outline my best betting spots!

#2 - Hold On Honey (NEXT BEST) - $2.60
#3 - Lost In Transit - $2.70
#7 - Clover’s Prince - $8.50
#1 - Dragon Miss - $15.00

BEST BET - #2 - Hold On Honey (NEXT BEST)
Giving Hold On Honey one last chance before I jump off him. He has been getting so close in all of his three runs this prep but just keeps finding one better. He does really get everything to suit this time and there doesn’t, bar one other, look like too many challengers here. Overdue and surely gets it done this time round with hard fitness.

THE DANGER - #3 - Lost In Transit
That one challenger, and joint favourite on some of the Aussie betting sites is Stuart Kendrick’s Lost In Transit who has picked up back to back wins at the Sunshine Coast and now looks to step up to this grade and keep winning. His last win came over the 1200m where he easily crossed to find the front and didn’t allow anything else to get into the race. Looks well placed off the back of that run which he did quite fast as well.

VALUE BET  - #7 - Clover’s Prince
The Team Edmonds trained Clover’s Prince is a few weeks between runs but he should still be able to retain fitness and can make this a race. He last ran over the 1200m here where he looked to click up on the straight from the speed but just couldn’t get to the quinella when third to a smart horse. Interesting that he comes back in trip but should be strong regardless.

BEST BET - #5 - Kronenbourg
Kronenbourg is one of my favourite horses up North and shapes up very well here for Tony Gollan, I think he is one of the better bets on the program. He won two weeks ago at Toowoomba and even if he didn’t knock off the best of fields, the manner in which he did it was very impressive when getting a good run in transit and just letting down hard late under Orman’s steering for a nice timed win. I think the distance is fine for him and he will handle anything thrown at him. Decent price as well, keen.

THE DANGER - #10 - Blackcomb
Blackcomb is a key danger for me. Not that he was doing badly at all under Danny O’Brien but the way he’s been going under Kris Lees is hard to ignore and he now comes into this third up, hard fit and ready to win again. He won two back before coming very close over the Mile at Warwick Farm when looking for longer. He gets that now, good gate, winnable race.

VALUE BET  - #8 - Blacklog (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Looking for likely improvers here and Blacklog fits the profile well. He raced over the mile at Toowoomba a fortnight ago where he was well deep in the field and wasn’t a winning chance but did start to really let down late in the piece when able to place second there to the aforementioned Kronenbourg. Given the way he raced there the extra 200m is super positive so as long as he isn’t too far back he goes well here.

BEST BET - #2 - Desert Icon (BEST BET)
Chris Waller often brings runners to the bigger Queensland races with a fair bit of intent and I think that Desert Icon strikes a very winnable race that hasn’t been done without consideration. He last stepped out a couple weeks ago at Rosehill where he placed a very close third place to the race fitter Athabascan and the Sydney form rarely reads poorly up North. Very soft edition of this race as well, I doubt he runs badly and likely wins.

THE DANGER - #7 - Military Gambler
Military Gambler takes a step up in competition from the regional scene for this assignment but on ratings / times he reads well for a soft edition of the Queensland Cup. I was a bit of a doubter of this Chris Munce product until he proved me wrong last time out in the Toowoomba cup where he put on an ever impressive display to win there and win well. He will be ready for the additional lengths now and doesn’t take on any more weight for this which is positive.

VALUE BET - #1 - King Frankel
King Frankel these days is hard to tell how well he is going but with his best he’s better than Desert Icon even. He last raced in the Kingston Town where he did look strong on the speed before just suddenly fading and never being a threat behind Just Fine. That race is obviously a fair bit stronger than this and I don’t think Neasham would have turned him around for this without any intent but I am not convinced. If he brings his best he wins though so has to be considered, maybe watch in the yard.
