Saturday Racing Tips - Flemington Racecourse 01/07/23

Winter Championship Season Day Finale has arrived at Flemington and we have a ripper nine race card at the program off the back of our return to this racecourse at the beginning of the month. I am keen to get stuck right into things as we see four stakes races on the card supported by a bunch of competitive, high level open races. Most of the races are contested from sprint / mid distance which only excites me more so follow me below as I outline my best bets for the Flemington racecard this Saturday!

BEST BET - #1 - Extreme Spirit (BEST BET)  
I am always a fan of trying to grab some early value / early winners on these big race days as often there are astutely placed runners for big stables that come in to boost their ratings and I think that the Gary Portelli trained Extreme Spirit fits the profile quite well. He had a two run autumn Prep that included a debut win against some good horses and then ran in The Skyline before being spelled. He has looked more than up to the task in his trials to return and with Melham on they won’t run badly.

THE DANGER - #2 - Mafia
Mafia looks like a good thing going for the Snowdens and can peak here third up. He won fresh at Wyong but really didn’t beat much there before coming to Sandown Hillside where he sat on the speed and was beaten just over a length to Links when third there and we all know what Links is capable of now so the form from that looks good. He’s hard fit now, better for the runs and if he slides forward without too much adversity will be hard to catch from out front. Go close.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Spring Eagle
I like the quick turn around for Spring Eagle who represents the Bedggod stable off the back of a huge day for the stable last Saturday at Caulfield. He ran there, finishing pretty far down the track behind Outback Miss which is obviously much stronger form than this but I think he just had to shake things off a bit there as he came into it off a bit of a break. Has that run under the belt and will look a lot fresher now. Confident he runs well.

BEST BET - #5 - Legio Ten (NEXT BEST) 
It took me awhile to make a decision between a couple of these as there are some Group 1 horses in the making in this race but I don’t think i can get too far away from Legio Ten who we have been on in both of his career starts this prep and he has dominantly scored in both. His last run came down the straight here three weeks ago when he was off the speed and then cut through the inside and got the job done. This will be by far the hardest assignment yet but he’s hard fit, flying and can win again.

THE DANGER - #12 - Extratwo
Extratwo is a Group 1 horse in the makings for the Maher and Eustace giants. He’s made it two wins from two starts this time in. He flew home in a Kyneton maiden to easily salute there before going to Sandown Hillside and stepping up to the 1300m where he again saluted dominantly, albeit being disqualified today (30/06) as Wiremu pinn rode all his rides overweight that day, doesn’t take anything away from the horse however. She isn’t meeting any particularly stiff competition relative to how she's been running and I think that she could put these away without it even looking too hard.

VALUE BET  - #6 - Who Dares 
Who Dares has been up for what seems like forever but he has been running very well for the Carey stable, is hard fit, draws well and gets an honest chance here. His last three runs have come at this track and three back he raced at this trip when clocking a career best time and running amazingly, only missing as he was crowded out on the line and easily would have won otherwise. He’s been backing that up with solid runs since and comes into this now with a heap of experience here, hard fit and with a good alley. Not sure how much upside there is left but if he has anything to offer here he can’t be discounted.

BEST BET - #6 - It’sourtime
We were on It’sourtime last time out at Flemington and the time before and whilst he didn’t get the chocolates last time out I thought that he ran very bravely at a distance (1400m) that he wasn’t totally suited to when he just faded late into fourth behind King Magnus, only beaten a length. He drops back 200m for this which I think is very good off the back of that longer run and he is the class of this field. Keen to be in his corner again.

THE DANGER - #7 - Sigh
The market is giving plenty of respect to the Peter moody trained Sigh who hasn’t put a foot wrong this prep. She’s had two runs this time in, both of them down the Flemington straight and both have been smart wins. Her most recent run saw her lead them out where they ran it hard up front and she looked beat towards the end of the run but just kept finding the line and scored narrowly. They’ll likely ride her with a bit more of a sit this time and if they do she will be very hard to beat late in this race.

VALUE BET - #9 - Pizarro (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
We probably backed Pizarro just a touch too early when fresh behind Conscript at Royal Randwick in ‘The Sea’ where she was very honest in defeat, only beaten a length second to Conscript there and then ran in a strong BM94 at Randwick again last time out where he didn’t look as good as he did fresh but also got unlucky throughout the run there. Hard fit now third up, will have his racing manners in check and I just have a special place for this horse and would love to see him win.

One of the most significant considerations in picking up multiple winners is the track bias, which favors horses that don’t get too far back in the run at Flemington Racecourse. As a result, horses drawn on the inside have a better chance of performing well compared to those drawn towards the outside.
