Saturday Racing Tips - Flemington Racecourse 16/09/23

Makybe Diva day has arrived at Flemington which marks the real centerpoint of the group 1 races season and I am very keen on this year’s edition of what is one of the biggest race cards of the Spring season. I have run through the card and have picked out some nice betting spots across both the listed and non listed races and have thoroughly outlined three particularly good betting races below so follow me for another exciting day of listed racing down south!

BEST BET - #2 - Interpretation 
D-day has just about arrived for the Maher and Eustace trained Interpretation who hasn’t won since coming down under but is due and looks like the stable has their sights set on bigger things for him. If that’s the case he has to take this out. He’s had two runs this time in from a long 38 week spell with both coming at The Valley and in both he has placed a close runner up in good times, which wasn’t an easy thing to do fresh. He’s now hard fit, ready to go out to the 2500m and I think he just wins this.

THE DANGER - #1 - Serpentine
Serpentine is a horse I have plenty of time for. The Waterhouse / Bott product is a serious horse and likely the talent of this field who looks to have come back to racing in a big way for the stable. He resumed a fortnight ago in the City Tatts Cup at Randwick where he got a bit out of his ground early and settled in the run to chase well in a very strong resumption effort when second to Athabascan, who looks a class animal himself. He’s a second up winner, should have plenty to offer here and will be right there if Interpretation slips up.

VALUE BET  - #10 - United Nations (NEXT BEST)
Another very strong Maher and Eustace import stayer is United Nations who looks to be approaching his peak in this race and is definitely going well enough to win here. He’s had three runs from a spell this time in to kick off his Australian career and really got going in his last start where he came from out wide to chase hard all straight at The Valley and clear the field bar the winner who had the gun run. That should hold him in good stead for this and is ready for the trip now.

BEST BET - #3 - Detonator Jack (NEXT BEST) 
If you have been following me for a couple seasons now you would know that my love for Maher and Eustace’s Detonator Jack is no secret. He resumed off of a long spell a couple weeks ago at Caulfield in the Regal Roller Stakes off of the 1200m where he looked the winner a long way and his first up condition just gave way late when he ran a close fourth to a progressive Savannah Cloud. He’ll be much fitter for that tough run, is proven second up and has drawn a great gate. I think he’s one of the better betting spots on the card.

THE DANGER - #4 - Kalino
Kalino is an honest horse who is never far away for Chris Waller. He’s seen a successful campaign thus far, resuming with a win fresh at Rosehill over the 1300m in not the strongest of fields but still an honest win before racing a fortnight ago at Caulfield where he looked like he was going to draw away from them in the straight but finished just behind the smart Devoted. He comes into this hard fit now, with a run at this trip under the belt, sure to make this a race.

VALUE BET  - #5 - Nicolini Vito
I am not sure if Nicolini Vito has what it takes to win this but he does certainly have what it takes to measure up. He hasn’t raced for just over a month after running at this track and trip where they ran their legs off in a front dominated race that saw him finish off well when not a winning chance. He’s a track specialist with three wins here in ten runs and gets in super light with Dee on. I reckon he looks the winner at some point in this race.

BEST BET - #7 - Princess Grace (BEST BET)
I think that this is Mr Brightsides’ race to lose and if you were following me two weeks ago on Memsie Stakes weekend at Caulfield I tipped Princess Grace to roll him there and she nearly did. Well, depends how you define nearly; she set third on the leaders back through the run before cutting back inside under Shinn’s steering and starting a powerful run only to be held up at a crucial stage in the straight and when she got clear air again she was super strong through the line to finish second only to Mr Brightside. She will be approaching his peak now third up, the extra 200m looks good as she has never been unsighted in seven runs at the mile with three wins and the rest placings. I think that she can definitely turn the tides now.

THE DANGER - #1 - Mr Brightside
No knock on the Hayes’ boys top star in Mr Brightside who has probably forgotten the feeling of being beaten by now after winning four in a row dating back to the All Star Mile in March this year. His last win a fortnight back in the Memsie was nothing short of impressive when he was three wide all trip and still found plenty under Craig Will to kick away from the field at the 50-100m and win. He’s 9 from 13 at the mile, loves racing here and is in career best form. 

VALUE BET - #5 - Francesco Guardi
It is hard to see a horse winning outside of the first couple lines of betting in this race but if there’s going to be shock I think it’s coming from Waller’s Francesco Guardi who is looking towards the Cups again not so later this year. He resumed in the Winx stakes when trapped on the inside in the worst ground after not being seen since the end of 2022 and had his usual tough, strong stride where he just kept finding the line, albeit not a winning chance. He’s not ready yet to take this out IMO but he could easily squeeze a place as he keeps working towards the biggest races in the country that come in a couple months.

One of the most significant considerations in picking up multiple winners is the track bias, which favors horses that don’t get too far back in the run at Flemington Racecourse. As a result, horses drawn on the inside have a better chance of performing well compared to those drawn towards the outside.
