Saturday Racing Tips - Ipswich Racecourse 17/06/23

Ipswich Cup Day has arrived and we have a big nine race card with three Stakes races to end the day off in races 7-9, with the feature of the day being the Tab Ipswich Cup, an Open race over the 2150m for a share of $200k prize money. The card is supported by a few solid staying races and a bunch of competitive sprints. I expect the day to be very exciting with top Queensland and out of state stables sending runners in for the listed races at Ipswich this Saturday!

BEST BET - #3 - Defiant Spirit (BEST BET)
Defiant Spirit looks like the top chance in the opener and I am keen on her prospects here. The Juvenile debuted for Stuart Kendrick at the Sunshine Coast when he powered home in very good time to defy his long market quote and win well there. He goes out to 1200m now which is ideal and gets an honest contest here but I think he only runs well.

THE DANGER - #8 - Deep Dawn
Main threat looks like the Tony Gollan trained Deep Dawn who is a well bred filly by Deep Field. She trialled in Mid Jan but they clearly weren’t totally satisfied with where she was at and as such as patiently been working along and based on the trial win at Doomben last week she looks more than ready to make start one a winning one. Top chance.

VALUE BET  - #6 - Upstart Legend
Not an awful lot of value in this play but I do think these three that I have outlined are the top chances and Upstart Legend can certainly take this out. He comes into this race with just 52kg on his back with the claim from Graham and should run very well here with no weight on his back. He’s a last start winner and actually did it in a decent time at Toowoomba even if he didn’t beat much off there, should go close here.

BEST BET - #1 - Numerian (NEXT BEST) 
I have to be in Numerian’s corner after his run in the G2 Q22 at Eagle Farm last week when he was buried back in the big field and whilst he wasn’t a danger to Without A fight, the way in which he worked home strongly was very impressive and he clocked some good late splits in the process. Neasham clearly thinks the quick turn around is fine and this race is a coast along compared to what he has been contesting.

THE DANGER - #4 - Berdibek
I am a big fan of the John O’Shea trained Berdibek who has been working nicely towards a win in his three runs back from a spell this time in and made big improvements three weeks ago when racing in the G2 Lord Mayor’s Cup at Eagle Farm where set 6th in the run and was crowded / held up at some crucial stages but still trucked along to finish in third place there behind Without A Fight who then went on to win the Q22 a couple weeks later. He will be hard fit now, in great form and hard to beat.

VALUE BET  - #13 - Sneak Preview 
I really like the David Vandyke trained stayers this season he seems to be going very well and whilst this one has been around the mark for some time this prep he appears to be holding form well. He scored two runs ago at around this distance at Doomben and then raced last time out at Eagle Farm where he came on from last to find the line very strongly behind a smart winner. Out to 2150m looks reasonably positive and he is sneaky flying. Top chance.

BEST BET - #12 - Blaze A Trail
Blaze A Trail is hard fit, in form and still has more upside to come. He raced in The Archer at Rockhampton first up where he was against the shape of race and he was never headed there but then went to Eagle Farm three weeks ago in The Star where he was very honest in defeat, shifting out at the 200m to start his run home and beat off all but Antino. The stable noted it was a good fitness benefit, he’s hard fit now and will be sure to run well.

THE DANGER - #4 - Gravina
Gravina looks like a very real threat in this field for James Cummings. He ran two backs back in the Moreton Cup and I did think he would go a lot closer there as Cummings had real intent on the Stradbroke for him but he was against the race shape / track pattern there and was never headed. He takes a sharp step down in class, is fitter and I like him out in distance now.

VALUE BET - #7 - Irish Songs (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
Irish Songs has been going ever so well for the White stable since changing camps earlier this year and they have thrown him straight into the firing line with some big races. Whilst he hasn’t won he has been getting a lot sharper in this company and fitter. He ran in the same Moreton Cup as Gravina two weeks ago and closed off the race really well there, passing quite a few in the home straight. This will be his easiest contest in some time and I am keen on his prospects.
