Saturday Racing Tips - Moonee Valley Racecourse 29/07/23

It feels like we have been away from Moonee Valley for some time now and it is only fitting that we return to the track with a monster nine race card that see $1.2million prize money on offer across the day’s racing and we kick the card off with two sprints that are followed by mixed mid distance / true staying contests. All of the races are in Open grade of strong Benchmark’s, with two BM100’s on the card. I am keen to get straight into things and hopefully we pick up some winners at the return to Valley racing.

Moonee Valley R3 - Dominant 65 Years Hcp (1600m)

Selections:
#10 - Sacred Bull (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $8.50
#7 - Another Wil - $2.60
#3 - Elsie May - $8.00
#2 - Affordable - $15.00

BEST BET - #10 - Sacred Bull (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
I am not sure how far out of his ground Sacred Bull gets here but if he isn’t too far back in the run he will be the strongest late I am convinced. The Price/Kent runner comes into this off the back of a soft maiden kill at Bairnsdale where he essentially raced against himself but his run style, splits and the way he moved along to win was very impressive. He’ll likely settle back in the field but at this distance range he will have plenty of time to come on.

THE DANGER - #7 - Another Wil
Another Wil looks like a good horse for the Maher and Eustace giants and they rarely place runners poorly at this track. He debuted not too long ago at Werribee where he put the writing on the wall before racing last time out at Moe out to this distance where he destroyed the field and clocked the best late sectionals of the day there. He will have plenty more to offer here only third up but I just don’t understand why he isn’t taking another step up in trip? Regardless, I am not Ciaron Maher and I trust their judgement.

VALUE BET  - #3 - Elsie May
The second line in betting is the Maher and Eustace trained Elsie May who could put these away and it wouldn’t surprise me off the back of her last start effort. She’s had just the two runs for the camp since being brought over from New Zealand by them and didn’t take much to get going when she dominantly saluted in the Heavy over the Mile at Sandown Lakeside a couple weeks back. Again, I think this Maher and Eustace runner is looking for the 2000m off the back of that but you have to trust the stable wouldn’t place their runners without consideration.

Moonee Valley R4 - Lee Ann Suryn Hcp (2040m)

Selections:
#2 - Torranzino (BEST BET)  - $4.80
#3 - Magnaspin - $5.50
#4 - So Sleek - $6.50
#7 - Slane - $7.50

BEST BET - #2 - Torranzino (BEST BET)
I generally stay away from staying races but we have had success in the past at The Valley and whilst this is a competitive field I really like the chance of the Paul Presuker trained Torranzino who has won his past two races and is looking for the hat-trick here. Both of the wins have come over this distance and last time out he stepped up to Saturday grade at Caulfield where he made some mistakes in the run but found plenty to score dominantly. He should still have more upside here third up and I am keen to see how he goes.

THE DANGER - #3 - Magnaspin
Magnaspin hasn’t put in a bad effort so far this preparation for the Corstens and he can win again here. His last run came two weeks back at Flemington where he got a solid run behind the speed and gave a kick but didn’t have what it took to finish the race off, albeit jumping up 300m in distance. I think that was as a means to ready him up for the next step up in distance to the 2000m and now he should handle the trip a lot better. It seems like an astute move from the stable and I am a big fan of this horse in general.

VALUE BET  - #4 - So Sleek
You would imagine that the Maher and Eustace trained So Sleek is going to look sharp here off the back of stepping up to this distance last time out. He’s a lightly raced horse for the camp that has only had five runs thus far but has been progressing very nicely thus far. He stepped out to this distance mid last month for the first time and was very impressive, beating all but the super progressive First Immortal before racing again at Caulfield over this distance where he wasn’t totally suited at the track and still powered home for fourth. He is a high class animal, hard fit and should not be treated lightly.

Moonee Valley R6 - Dominant Brand Protection (Bm78) (2500m)

Selections:
#4 - Ferago (NEXT BEST) - $6.00
#3 - Claidheamh Mor - $7.50
#2 - Thorin - $12.00
#1 - Strawberry Rock - $5.00

BEST BET - #4 - Ferago (NEXT BEST)
This is a tricky distance range to nail but I think that Fergao’s setup looks too similar to last year to ignore, as he won this race last year. He’s a smart horse for Pat Ryan Jr who ran third in the Vobis Gold Stayers and then took this out last year. This time he ran a week ago when getting crowded out in the run and never really given the chance to come on. Craig Will retains the ride, he draws a much softer gate now and will be afforded more time and he gets the ground that he likes, with his toe in it a bit. I think that he only runs well.

THE DANGER - #3 - Claidheamh Mor
Hard to get away from Claidheamh Mor who has only been putting in big runs for the Rielly camp. We had him in our Saturday Tips two runs back in the Heavy at Sandown Lakeside over the 2100m where he just kept improving from deep in the run and wore the frontrunners down to get the money. He then backed that effort up with another strong run at the track and trip where he was unlucky to miss in a driving go, finishing third. He looks astutely placed for the step out in distance now and has a touch of class about him.

VALUE BET - #2 - Thorin
Thorin is taking a decent step up in competition but comes into this very well weighted with the claim from Bull and has been putting in performances that are good enough to shape up here. Last time out, he raced three weeks ago over the 2000m at Caulfield where he found the front in the run and took over at the 600m to power away and score by three lengths. The part I liked was how strong he was through the line, suggestive of the step up in distance being very well suited to him and I think that he can speck at odds here.

Best Promotions for Moonee Valley Racecourse

Promotions are traditionally the primary way for punters to create an edge over the bookies, as they can save your cash when your runner fails to win, in the instance of Unibet they often offer 2nd and 3rd money back in bonus bets for a selection of races on the midweek and Provincial racing days. Coupled with their generous odds I have to put them as the top bookie promotion wise at the moment for Australian racing.

If you are looking for the best promotions this week for Wednesday's racing I wouldn’t look past Unibet, often they offer odds boosts in addition to the money back promotions. Don’t forget to check your account as well for personal offers.

Promotions often change so make sure you sign up at unibet.com.au to see what promotions are applicable to you and you may even be surprised to find some promotions that weren’t mentioned here!
