Saturday Racing Tips - Mornington Racecourse 20/04/24

Racing returns to Mornington for a great eight race card in Victoria and there is $1.6 million on offer across all the racing set to take place tomorrow. The feature of the day is the Sportsbet Mornington Cup, a 2400m staying race for a share of $300k. I have gone through the card and picked out my three best betting spots so follow me as I run through the card!

BEST BET - #1 - Perspiration (NEXT BEST)
Perspiration looks the leading contender in a race that appears to be Ciaron Maher taking on two of Cummings lightly raced two year olds. He comes out of a run at Caulfield two weeks ago where he had no luck when finishing second to Feroce and now can settle nearer the speed and get a more economical run in transit. If he gets both he will be awfully tough to beat.

THE DANGER - #3 - Brighella 
They don’t debut much better than Brighella did for the Godolphin camp when stepping out at Cranbourne over the 1000m and letting them get way in front before storming over the top of the field for a massive win where he completely overcame the leader bias at the course. He’s going to relish getting out to this trip and given how the course should drag him in he will be the most dangerous late. 

VALUE BET  - #2 - Snack Bar 
Snack Bar is another very sharp looking Cummings trained juvenile who debuted with a close second at Ballarat before stepping out at the course again three weeks between runs and setting fourth along the leaders backs before taking over inside the 300m and never being in doubt from there despite having a couple issues in the run. He looks like a true 1200m animal so go well at this track / trip.

BEST BET - #5 - Ranveer
Word on the street is that this is Ranveer’s race to lose. He hasn’t been seen at the races since this race last year where he was first up off of a 79 week spell and got so unlucky to not win when flying home to Fasuto and where he clearly would have won if not for being held up from the 400m to 200m. The jumpout was rock solid last week, home track advantage and he looks the map horse of the race. Go well here.

THE DANGER - #11 - Title Fighter 
Title Fighter has to be given another look here for the Douglas camp after being thrown into the deep end with the likes of Estriella first up off of a 22 week break at Flemington where he got no luck and couldn’t find a run until the 400m where he did still battle on steadily. Coming back to this level, with plenty of upside and back to the 1000m all look positive for him and I expect a reasonable amount of strength here. 

VALUE BET  - #3 - Fasuto (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)  
Last year’s winner Fasuto is going to be hard to beat again for Clint Mac and resumes in this race after not having been seen since Ballarat Cup Day where he couldn’t do much behind Taunting. It was largely due to the Bog track in my opinion and he will be a lot stronger back in this company compared to those. His recent Cranbourne jumpout was more than good enough and he maps well again.

BEST BET - #4 - First Immortal (BEST BET) 
I am keen to give FIrst Immortal another chance here after racing in the Easter Cup a fortnight ago at Caulfield where he was racing along the fence in restrictive room and couldn’t really get a chance to build into the race so I think we should be forgiving of that run. He’s hard fit now and steps out to a distance where he does some of his best work. I think he will have plenty of time to come on as well now and should be able to hit hard here.

THE DANGER - #10 - Strawberry Rock 
I have always had time for Strawberry Rock for Ciaron Maher and he’s been outstanding for the camp this time with a bunch of sharp placings and a very strong win two back at The Valley over the 2500m where he was doing solid work throughout the whole run. His most recent run in the Roy Higgins is great form for this when only swamped very late and having to use up extra effort after being held up from the 500m to 300m. I think he will be awfully strong here. 

VALUE BET - #2 - Future History
Future History looks to be approaching his peak here third up from a spell. He is another that comes out of the Easter Cup where he sat on the speed throughout and looked to be very strong late before just fading when his second up condition got to him late. He’ll still hav plenty of upside third up here and hard fit he will be stronger late.

One of the most significant considerations in picking up multiple winners is the track bias, which favors horses that don’t get too far back in the run at Flemington Racecourse. As a result, horses drawn on the inside have a better chance of performing well compared to those drawn towards the outside.
