Saturday Racing Tips - Morphettville Racecourse 20/05/23

The Adelaide Carnival comes to an end this Saturday off the back of Robert Sangster Stakes day a couple weeks ago we conclude with Goodwood Day. There’s six group races on the card, with the feature of the day being the G1 ‘The Tab Goodwood’ run over 1200m for a share of half a million dollars prize money. The weather is good, the track israted a soft 5 and the rail is out +6m for the entire course. Follow me below as I outline my best betting spots for Goodwood Day at Morphettville racecourse!

BEST BET - #5 - Chilled (NEXT BEST) 
Chilled at the 1200m is a bit of a query but she is a very genuine, Matt Laurie trains tis filly that narrowly ran second two runs back over this trip in the Mornington Sires and then went to the Without Fear two weeks ago under Dee who rode her a peach and she duly saluted. If she can replicate the same kind of run at the 1200m now with a cozy ride to leave her with plenty in the tank for a big finish.

THE DANGER - #6 - Iphemedia
I think Iphemedia commands some level of respect in this field. The Griffiths/Kock trained two year old has been worked along very quickly for her first Stakes race start after having had just the two career outings but there is clearly real intent from the stable for this and it isn’t an overly deep race. The last run came at this track where he just missed to come second to Chilled who looks like a good horse and before then the win was very good.

VALUE BET  - #1 - Heuristic 

Heuristic comes into this three weeks between runs for James Cummings after doing quite nicely running at this track/distance three weeks ago. He was near the speed in that run all run and then presented on the turn with Pannell asking for more and Heuristic gave more but just couldn’t win when third behind Treasurway. I think if he gets a little bit of luck in running with a soft map that he looks to have he will be prominent late.

BEST BET - #4 - Cap De Joie 
Cap De Joie should present very well here fifth up with a rise in trip. She’s come close seconds in two runs and won one in her last four and the latest run was in this distance range at Sandown two weeks back where she struggled in the wet and only got going late in the piece, still working home strongly. She’s got the class edge on these and whilst she has been a bit costly for me to follow, I am happy to give her another chance here. Might just be a bit too short for me to lay chalk on her.

THE DANGER - #8 - Thought Provoking
Very interesting runner in Thought Provoking who has come back to the races in great order for the Price and Kent stable in her two runs back from a half year spell, placing close seconds in both of them. She should have won fresh at Mornington before changing up tactics when going to Sandown where they rode her out front and she battled away well in defeat. Goes out to the longer trip, gets a better jockey on and should look very good here.

VALUE BET  - #1 - La Dragontea (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY)
La Dragontea hasn’t done much in her two runs since resuming but generally makes big improvements third up and I think she has been working towards a race like this. She finished right at the tail of the field when resuming in the Gold Bracelet over the 1400m at Bendigo before being eased back after doing a bit too much early in a Sandown BM100 at the beginning of this month over the 1600m. Goes out in trip now and gets a big jockey upgrade, look for her late.

BEST BET - #9 - Lofty Strike (BEST BET)
Lofty Strike gets as good of a chance as any to record his first Group win. The quality colt for the Sandhu stable hasn’t raced since the beginning of April in the TJ Smith where he wasn’t disgraced in defeat in what became an all out sprint that was won by I Wish I Win and he wasn’t suited from well back in the field. There’s much less depth here overall and he has been given a freshen since, no weight on his back, I think he just wins this.

THE DANGER - #4 - Kallos
Kallos looks like an awesome prospect for Cummings who hasn’t done anything wrong this preparation. All you can do is win and that is what he has done in all three starts. Last time out he raced in the Irwin Stakes over the 1100m at this track and was dominant there. He’s yet to prove himself at the 1200m, being unplaced in both his two runs at the trip but is drawn to receive every chance this time and hasn’t been going this well in previous preps either.

VALUE BET - #16 - Royal Merchant
Royal Merchant is being overlooked in this field for Maher and Eustace and must be respected here. She ran in the Tobin Bronze a couple weeks back, sitting just off the speed and timing her run really well when she drove to the front inside the last 150m to win. She only has to make slight improvements off that run to be competitive in this.
