Saturday Racing Tips - Randwick Racecourse 01/04/23

Racing continues at Randwick for Day One of the Championships this Saturday for a high caliber card of black type racing and there are ten races, four of which at Group 1 level. There’s almost twelve million dollars of prize money available on the card and the card is highlighted by The Doncaster Mile, a 1600m race for a share of a whopping $4 million prize money. Join me below as I outline all my best spots.

BEST BET - #1 - Cylinder (BEST BET)
Cylinder has only had the three runs this campaign and should still have plenty left in the tank to score again fourth up. The form around him doesn’t really get much better than this is already. He kicked off the prep winning the Silver Slipper and Todman Stakes which set him up to run favourite in the Golden Slipper but he just found one better in Shinzo to finish second there. Maps to get the perfect run here, hard fit, and 1400m will be fine.

THE DANGER - #4 - Veight
I think Veight is the second best horse in this race and we don’t know his ceiling. He’s kicked off his career with back to back wins and honestly his run style suggests he will continue to improve. He ran in the Sires Produce last time out at the beginning of the month and he thrashed them there, being ever so impressive. He has the 1400m run under the belt now and has more upside than these. He’s drawn out wide which is the concern but he’s flying so with some luck I think he wins.

VALUE BET  - #6 - Brave Mead
I backed Brave mead in the Pearl last friday night at the Valley when he lead throughout and won seemingly with ease. I think the quick back up is fine given he didn’t really look like he was taxed from that run and I really like the way he gives a strong kick in the straight without fail in every run. I think if he’s close on the turn he will surprise these.

BEST BET - #1 - Nature Strip 
I might regret tipping Nature Strip who is aging but I think that as he is ageing he needs a bit of give in the track to run at his best. He should get that here tomorrow and I think that we are all well aware of just how good he is in Grand Final races. I think that there must have been issues in his resuming race in the Lightning, perhaps the ground had too much sting in it. He’s won this race the past three years and I think there’s about a 40% chance he breaks the record to make it four in a row.

THE DANGER - #10 - Giga Kick
Zac Purton was outstanding last week, riding two from two to kick off his stint here in Australia and it’s no surprise he takes the riding on what looks to be the next generation best sprinter in the country and maybe even the world. If he wins this, he takes that title. He knocked off Nature Strip last year in the Everest and on resumption in The Challenge he clocked in some of the best late splits you’ve ever seen. I think he will take a serious beating.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Lost And Running 
Nothing has gone well for Lost And Running in the last six months. He was scratched leading into the Everest and then recently was scratched again in the lead-up to his first run back in The Galaxy two weeks ago. He has trialled really super for his return and is a horse I have a lot of love for. I think if he can cross from the wide gate he can go close.

BEST BET - #2 - Mr Brightside (NEXT BEST)  
Mr Brightside took this race out last year and he’s proven this campaign that he’s going as good as ever when he scored in the All Star Mile two weeks ago at The Valley. He takes on 5kg this year from the weight he won it at last year and the last horse to carry 55.5kg was also the last horse to win back to back Doncasters which was Sacred Falls. Could just be the next one to do that…

THE DANGER - #5 - Fangirl 
Fangirl gets in ridiculously light at just 53.5kg and given the form around her she really does have an honest chance here. In her latest run she whacked away to the line with purpose to finish second to Anamoe which was the same story the run before. She now gets Jaoa Moriera aboard, is rock hard fit, handles any going and I think she has a great chance to take this out.

VALUE BET - #17 - Protagonist
Protagonist might not have what it takes to win this but he is a good each way play here. He has the 2000m run under his belt a couple weeks ago at Rosehill in the Sky High and that was a very strong win there in a strong driving finish to some other horses. He goes well down in weight and will be super strong late.
