Saturday Racing Tips - Randwick Racecourse 02/09/23

Listed racing is back at Randwick already for a belter ten race high level card that sees four listed races with three Group two’s, One Group 1 and the Sydney City Lexus CTC Cup to proceed things. The feature of the day is clearly the Group 1 Southern Cross Group Concorde Stakes to be run for a share of an immense $1million prize money and the card overall has some insanely competitive fields. I am very keen to get stuck straight into things so follow me below as I outline my best bets for the listed racing tomorrow.

BEST BET - #9 -  Remarque 
I think that Remarque is well on his way to the Everest for the Hawkes camp but this race will obviously prove me right or wrong. He’s really grown into his own skin since being Gelded and resumes at the course he loves the most and has been trialled well for this race. He’s got two wins and a placing in six runs here, three from five first up runs are winning ones, gets Schiller on and draws a good gate. I suspect Schiller will be waiting to pounce and start to emerge on the turn and from there I think Remarque could have these covered.

THE DANGER - #1 - Nature Strip
Whilst it would be that good to see The Strip come back flying I think that for now I have lost too much money to continue backing him as if he was the same horse that he still was two seasons ago. He hasn’t been totally disgraced since last winning The Shorts after coming back over from England but really hasn’t seemed to be the same horse since touching local shores again. However, he has been moving like a jet in his recent trials and is a true champion so can’t discount him totally.

VALUE BET  - #8 - Zapateo (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
One of the Godolphin representatives in this race is the returning Zapateo who hasn’t been seen at the races since a bunched finish third place to Royal Merchant in the Goodwood back at the end of May. She does her best work when returning with a 2-1-0 record in four first up runs and has multiple wins here. Her recent trial at this track was outstanding when beating the likes of Libertad, who we saw what he did last weekend. I think he is as good a chance as any here.

BEST BET - #1 - Think It Over (BEST BET) 
I am such a fan of Kerry Parker’s Think It Over and I believe now is his time to shine after resuming off of a huge spell in the Winx Stakes, his first run since the 2022 Queen Elizabeth Stakes win. He looked to have returned very well to racing when being eased down at the 1000m after not being afforded that many chances in the run but showing that he was right there and should now sharply improve, rarely runs a bad race second and I think Nash on is the perfect booking.

THE DANGER - #11 - Montefilia
Montefilia is another who resumed in the Winx Stakes and now looks to pick up her first win of the season for Chris Waller. She got well back in the field during the resuming run there but when asked to pick up she did and ran a very nice last 600m/400m/200m when working home well behind other Waller runner and winner Fangirl. The Query is if she is looking for longer / needs another run but she seems to have been wound up well and I think she likely goes close here.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Mo'unga
I think Mo’unga was just too bad to be true when resuming in the Winx stakes last time out where he did nothing and really didn’t look himself and has to be given another chance here. He often does need the first up run regardless and has only been out of the placings once in his six second up runs. He enjoys racing here albeit not winning here too often and whilst he likely wants one or two more runs I think he can easily fill a first four spot here and is a good play for the exotics.

BEST BET - #16 - Olentia (NEXT BEST)
I’d like to think Olentia towels this for Chris Waller but it does often get dicey as we approach the last races of the day and will have to see how the track is playing by the time that happens. She resumed at Rosehill three weeks ago when backed in to favouritism and Jmac gave her a great steer and she spanked them when asked for the effort. I’d say the stable is working her towards Group racing and this is a soft field relative to the races they’d like to see her contest. She looks one of the better bets of the program.

THE DANGER - #2 - My Oberon
Annabel Neasham’s My Oberon looks to be a super progressive horse who just needs the right grounding to be a winning threat in any race he is placed in. He has been trialling for a return to racing in a way with real intent and has been moving along very very well and whilst this may be more of a warm up run he has the class on a lot of these to win and win well first up. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him turn up tuned up and run a huge race.

VALUE BET - #6 - Fireburn
Fireburn is a horse I have plenty of time for and resumes off of a 15 week spell after going away a winner in The Roses at Doomben (G2). He loves racing here with three wins from eight runs here and the only query is that he doesn’t have any fresh wins. However, he looked to be moving along very nicely from a recent Warwick Farm trial and the booking of Jason Collett signals intent. Call me crazy but I think they could run a big race at odds here.
